二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Lia Thomas, a student at the University of Pennsylvania, is an excellent swimmer. She often beats her rivals by tens of seconds, breaking records. Her success is based on three things. One is natural talent. Another is persistent training. And the third is biology.

For although she identifies as a woman,Ms Thomas was born male.Since humans cannot change their sex (unlike their self-identified gender),she remains that way.On the eve of her biggest competition, Ms Thomas finds herself at the centre of the bad-tempered debate about whether trans women-males who identify as women-should compete in women’s sports. That,in turn,is part of a broader argument: should brute (纯粹的) biological facts sometimes override people’s deeply held feelings about their identities?

This newspaper believes it is almost always unfair to allow transgender women to compete in women’s sports. The advantages bestowed by male puberty (青春期) are so big that no amount of training or talent can enable female athletes to overcome them.Florence Griffith Joyner’s 100-metres world sprinting record has stood for three decades.A male matching it would not even make it to the Olympics, let alone the final. In 2016,at an American event for high-schoolers, four of the eight boys in the 100-metres final ran faster.

Much of the male advantage is granted by testosterone (睾丸素), a potent anabolic steroid whose levels rise sharply in male puberty. For many years, many sporting bodies, following the lead of the International Olympic Committee, hoped to deal with the issue by allowing trans women to compete in women’s events provided they took testosterone-suppressing drugs. But the science suggests this does not level the playing field.Suppressing testosterone in adults, it seems, does little to undo the advantages granted by a male adolescence.

Sports must therefore choose between inclusion and fairness; and they should choose fair play. That does not mean, as is sometimes claimed, that trans women would be barred from all sport. One way to make that clear would be to replace the “men’s” and “women’s” categories with “open” and “female” ones. The first would be open to all comers. The second would be restricted on the basis of biology.

Sport is public, and results can be measured objectively. That means the argument that the material facts of biology should sometimes outrank a person’s subjective sense of identity is easier to make. But bias exists, as a Republican bill in Florida to restrict “instruction” in schools about gender identity or sexual orientation makes plain.

That should be resisted. Most of the time,it costs little or nothing to respect people’s choices about how they wish to present themselves. In the rare cases where rights clash (不相容), society must weigh the balance sensitively and with open eyes.

【1】The author mentions Joyner’s 100-metres world sprinting record to show that ________.

A.most female athletes can’t rival trans women athletes

    C.instruction

    D.identity

【3】What is the author’s attitude towards trans people in sports competition?

    A.disagreeable

  • 27、For years video games have been criticized for making people more antisocial, overweight or depressed. Bui now researchers are finding that video games can actually change us for the better and improve both our body and mind.

Games can help to develop physical skills. Pre-school children who played interactive games have been shown to have improved motor skills, for example they can kick, catch and throw a ball better than children who don’t play video games. A study found that those who played video games were 27 percent faster and made 37 percent fewer errors than those who didn’t.

Games also benefit a variety of brain functions, including decision-making. People who play action-based games make decisions 25 percent faster than others, according to one study. It was also found that the best gamers can make choices and act on them up to six times a second, four times faster than most people. In another study by researchers from the University of Rochester in New York, experienced gamers were shown to be able to pay attention to more than six things at once without getting confused, compared with the four that most people can normally keep in mind.

There is also evidence that gaming can help with psychological problems. At the University of Auckland in New Zealand, researchers asked 94 young people diagnosed with depression to play a 3D fantasy game called SPARX and in many cases, the game reduced symptoms of depression more than conventional treatment.

The effects are not always so positive, however. Indiana University researchers carried out brain scans on young men and found evidence that violent games can adjust brain function after as little as a week of play, affecting regions in the brain associated with emotional control and causing more aggressive behavior in the player. But Danhne Bavelier, one of the most experienced researchers in the field, says that the violent action games that often worry p parents most may actually have the strongest beneficial effect on the brain. In the future, we may see many treatments for physical and neurological (神经的) problems, which include the playing of video games.

【1】In what way playing video games benefits very young children?

    A.Muscle control.

    B.Social interaction.

    C.Decision-making.

    D.The ability to focus.

【2】Which type of video game improves the decision-making speed?

    A.Interactive games.

    B.Action-based games.

    C.3D fantasy games.

    D.Violent games.

【3】What is the authors attitude to video games?

    A.Indifferent.

    B.Objective.

    C.Worried.

    D.Critical.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

A.The effects of different types of video games.

B.The negative effects of playing video games.

C.The beneficial effects of playing video games.

D.The effects of games on people’s behavior.

  • 28、A warm drink of milk before bed has long been the best choice for those wanting a good night’s sleep. But now a study has found it really does help people nod off—if it is milked from a cow at night.

Researchers have discovered that “night milk” contains more melatonin (褪黑激素), which has been proven to help people feel sleepy and reduce anxiety.

The study, by researchers from Seoul, South Korea, involved mice being fed with dried milk powder made from cows milked both during the day and at night.

Those given night milk, which contained 10 times the amount of melatonin, were less active and less anxious than those fed with the milk collected during daytime, according to the study published in The Journal of Medicinal Food.

Night milk quickened the start of sleep and caused the mice to sleep longer.

While the effect of cows milk harvested at different time has not been tested on humans up to now, taking melatonin drugs has been suggested to those who are struggling to fall asleep at night.

Previous studies have also indicated that milk can be excellent for helping sleep because of the calcium content, which helps people to relax.

Milk is also sugar-free and additive-free with nutritionists recommending skimmed milk as the best choice before bed as it is the least fattening. The more fat you take in before bedtime, the greater burden you will put on your body at night.

1According to the text, the mice fed with daytime milk _________.

    A. started sleep more easily   B. were more anxious

    C. were less active   D. woke up later

2Which of the following is true of melatonin according to the text?

    C. It’s used in sleeping drugs.

    D. It exists in milk in great amount.

3What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A. Night Milk and Sleep   B. Fat, Sugar and Health

    C. An Experiment on Mice   D. Milk Drinking and Health

4How does the author support the theme of the text?

    A. By giving examples.   B. By stating arguments.

    C. By explaining statistical data.   D. By providing research results.

  • 29、   I will not go on about the causes of sunburn because you probably already know. If you get sunburn, you may be feeling a bit embarrassed about it. Once you have sunburn, the damage is done. So try the following ways to ease the discomfort.

Cool it down by taking a bath or shower. Keep the water and room temperature warm, especially for children as they may easily feel cold. Some people like to add 1/2 cup of baking soda to the bath water. This may help reduce your pain. You could also place a wet and cool cloth on the burnt area for about 15 minutes. Do that several times a day.

Apply moisture(润肤膏). You can choose some cream that makes your skin not that dry. Apply aloe, either the plant form or gel. Aloe contains active things that help reduce pain. Over the next few days, the skin may peel脱皮) This is the body’s way of eliminating the dead skin, so keep using such cream to help make your skin comfortable.  Leave any blisters(水泡)complete. This helps speed healing and avoid infection as burst blisters can easily get infected. You can cover blisters to protect them if needed and definitely do not wear clothing that will cause friction(摩擦) as this can “pop” the blisters. Damaging the blisters can, and probably will cause more pain with rubbing on soft skin and also cause infection.

Give pain relief if needed. The medicine aspirin is not recommended for children.

At this point, the person may not be comfortable, so do not make it worse by applying something that can prevent healing and increase or lock in the heat under the skin, therefore causing more burn damage.

    See doctor if:

    * it covers a large part of the body or is severe in nature.

    * there is a high fever, chills, rash, nausea, and severe pain.

    * feeling faint or dizzy, rapid pulse or quick breathing.

    * extreme thirst, little or no urine output or sunken eyes.

1Why do some people use baking soda after getting sunburn?

A.To help prevent disease. B.To feel better in this way.

C.To avoid getting cold. D.To reduce the burnt area.

2What does the underlined word “eliminating ”in Paragraph 3 mean

    A.Protecting. B.Covering C.Improving D.Removing.

3What does the author consider important after getting sunburn

A.Avoiding breaking blisters. B.Going to see doctor immediately.

C.Taking medicine to avoid infection. D.Preventing the skin from developing blisters.

4What is the text mainly about

A.Things to help treat sunburn B.The common causes of sunburn.

C.Ways to deal with sunburn. D.Methods to deal with blisters properly.
