二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Ajay Gupta suffered from polio (小儿麻痹症) when he was six months old. However, seeing his father and grandfather run businesses aroused a deep sense of curiosity within Ajay to explore entrepreneurship.

While sending his daughter to playschool, he realized there was a gap in the quality of education provided. That’s when the idea of starting a playschool chain struck him. He launched Bachpan Play School in 2004 using his personal savings. Starting with one branch in Delhi, today the school has scaled up to 1,100 branches across India.

According to Ajay, what is unique about Bachpan’s story is the impact it has been able to create across Tier Il and Tier III cities in India. “Education institutes seem crowded in big cities, but when you move away from them, the case is different,” says Ajay. Furthermore, in the smaller cities, many schools were established around 40 years ago, and they lacked quality.

Ajay did not set out to penetrate (渗透) Tier II and Tier III cities exactly. His mission was to make preschool education more accessible and standardized. “I did not want Bachpan Play School to be a place where you send your kid for two months,” he says. “We made clear guidelines for teachers and syllabuses (教学大纲) for the kids monthly and annually.” Ajay adds that the particular curriculum, design, books, and well-thought-out strategy along with professional training are what shapes the core of Bachpan Play School chain.

As offline classes shifted to online ones during the pandemic, Ajay’s company launched Bachpan Live platform in April 2020. It also launched Bachpan Live app to offer live classes, online books, and more.

Since its launch, the platform has witnessed about 65,000 downloads. Ajay says, “The team has to consistently work towards improving the platform as parents of today have become very demanding. You cannot sell them anything. They want to see quality programs.”

【1】What did Ajay realize when he sent his daughter to playschool?

A.There was a gap between his daughter and him.

B.His daughter was not satisfied with her playschool.

C.He could make a big profit by running a playschool.

D.Some children couldn’t have access to quality education.

【2】What is special about Bachpan Play School?

A.It is not very competitive in big cities.

B.It is specially designed for disabled children.

C.It is financially supported by the government.

D.It has improved education quality in small cities.

【3】What did Ajay do to promote preschool education?

    A.He employed experienced teachers.

    B.He designed a two-month course for kids.

C.He made preschool education more formal.

D.He stressed the role of preschool education in society.

【4】What does Ajay expect Bachpan Live platform to do?

    A.Meet parents’ expectations.

B.Invite kids to attend online classes.

C.Replace offline classes in the future.

D.Share more books and classes online.

  • 22、Dear Dad,

Today, I spent a lot of time selecting and reading the Father’s Day cards at the shopping mall. They all had a special message that in some way or another reflected how I feel about you. Yet it occurred to me that not a single card said what I really wanted to say to you.

You’ll soon be 84 years old. Dad, you and I will have had 55 Father’s Days together. I haven’t always been with you on Father’s Day, but I’ve always been with you in my heart. You know, Dad, there was a time when we were separated by the generation gap. You stood on one side of the Great Divide and I on the other.

The Father-Daughter Conflict shifted into high gear(档位)when you taught me to drive the old Dodge while I decided I would drive the Chevy whether you liked it or not. To my surprise, when the police officer sent me home after you reported the Chevy stolen, you were so tolerant(宽容的)about it because I had thought that would probably be the worst night of my life.

Our relationship greatly improved when I married a man you liked, and things really turned around when we began making babies right and left. Somewhere along the line, the generation gap disappeared. I suppose I saw us and our relationship as aging together, rather like a fine wine.

But the strangest thing happened last week. I was at a stop sign and I watched as you turned the corner in your car. It didn’t immediately occur to me that it was you because the man driving looked so elderly and weak behind the wheel of that huge car. Perhaps I saw your age for the first time that day.

I guess what I’m trying to say, Dad, is what every son and daughter wants to say to their Dad today. Honoring a father on Father’s Day is about respect and sharing and acceptance and tolerance and giving and taking. It’s about loving someone more than words can say, and it’s my wish that it never had to end.

    I love you, Dad.

    Love,

    Jenny

【3】Jenny wrote his father this letter to .

    A.express her gratitude to him

    B.tell him about their conflicts

C.say sorry for her being stubborn

D.remind him of the early incident

  • 23、By examining tiny vessels (血管) inside a person’s eyes, doctors might one day be able to predict that person’s risk of early death, according to a new study.

Past research had shown the retina (视网膜), light-sensitive layers of nerve tissue at the back of the eye, as a possible indicator of a person’s bjological age. The retina offers a unique, accessible “window” to evaluate underlying pathological (病理的) processes of some serious diseases that are associated with increased risks of death. In the new study, the researchers turned to a deep-learning technique that could predict a person’s risk of death by analyzing the biological age of the retina.

Their deep-learning model, a type of machine learning and artificial intelligence that’s modeled to learn similar to a human brain, analyzed more than 80.000 images of fundus (眼底) - the internal back surface of the eye that includes the retina. They obtained the images from nearly 47.000 people between the ages of 40 and 69, stored in the UK. Biobank. TO figure out whether their model was accurate, they first analyzed more than 19,000 fundus images taken from more than 1,100 participants who were in relatively good health. The idea was that the retinal biological ages of these people should be fairly similar to their chronological age (实际年龄) .

The model was fairly accurate in predicting retinal ages, with an accuracy of within 3.5 years to chronological ages. They then used the model to assess the remaining nearly 36,000 participants’ fundus photos collected across a span of 11 years. They found that 51 percent of the participants had a “retinal age gap” - the difference between biological and chronological age - of more than 3 years, 28 percent had a gap of more than 5 years and 4.5 percent had a gap of more than 10 years. In other words, these participants had “older” eyes compared to their chronological age.

Those who had larger age gaps had a 49-67 percent higher risk of death from causes other than cardiovascular disease or cancer. With every one year increase in the age gap, the risk of death increased by 2 percent for any cause and 3 percent for causes other than cardiovascular disease and cancer.

【1】What can we know about the retina?

    A.It causes serious diseases.

B.It indicates the risk of death.

    C.It speeds pathological processes.

    D.It improves people’s physical health.

【2】How do researchers know the retinal age?

    A.By examining the nerve tissue.

    B.By studying the human brain,

    C.By checking the eyesight.

    D.By analyzing fundus images.

【3】What percentage of the participants had the largest retinal age gap?

    A.3.5%.

    B.4.5%.

    C.28%.

    D.51%

【4】Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

A.A new study is conducted on tiny vessels

B.Image technology is used to predict diseases

    C.Eyes may reveal a person’s biological age

D.A deep-leaning on the retina is necessary

  • 24、   European architecture in Tianjin is a window showing China’s historical changes. In a one-day tour, you can see some old western-style private residences, former Imperial Gardens and enjoy Tianjin snacks, like a time traveler.

    The Garden of Jingyuan

The Garden of Jingyuan was constructed in 1921. It’s now an excellent example of an old private residence in Tianjin, which is now well-preserved. The last emperor of the Qing Dynasty, Puyi, once lived here after his abdication(退位), from July 1929 to November 1931. He changed the name to Jingyuan, which references his desire to strengthen and ennoble his spirit by living in a peaceful environment.

In 1925, Puyi, the last emperor of China, had a brief stay here after his abdication from Beijing. It is certainly a strange coincidence that the founder of the Republic of China and the last emperor chose exactly the same place to live, though at different times.

The mansion is visible from the street, but the buildings and gardens are not open to the public at present.

    Italianate Street

Nearly 200 European-style buildings have been conserved in the old Italian Concession(租借地)and form the modern --Italian-style Street  on the north bank of the Haihe River. The street has been developed as a shopping center and entertainment district. A square named after Marco Polois surrounded by numerous Italianate large buildings.
