Here are some traditional German beer games.
Beer Boot Pass
A very, very popular game played in Germany is the beer boot pass ( Bier Boot ), which has gained popularity all over the world. The game is usually played to pin the next round of beer on a person. In this, a full glass of beer is passed around in the group—there are some rules for this—it has to be tipped every time before it is passed and not a drop of beer must be spilled. The second-to-last person who finishes the beer must pay for the next round. The game then becomes all about judgment because either you drink the entire beer or have a sip and pass it on. You never know who the second to last person will be , so the uncertainty and excitement makes the game a favorite.
Beer Crate-Running
This is a traditional game that is extremely popular in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, more popularly referred to as Kastenlauf. The game is similar to running a race, where a route is marked, ranging from anywhere between 5-12 km. Each participant brings a crate of beer ( the size and quantity will be specified ). The first person who successfully finishes the entire crate of beer before getting to the finish line wins.
Flunkyball
This outdoor game is played with one team being matched against another, with equal numbers in both. The teams stand on opposite sides of the ground in a line, with their beers lined before them. An empty bottle or a tin can is placed in the center and another object ( used as an aim ) is brought in, something like a tennis ball. The first team ( A ) hits the ball onto the target to tumble(打翻)it. Once the bottle has tumbled, team A will start drinking their beers. Meanwhile, team B must run to the center, place the bottle upright, find the ball, and cross back into the line before yelling‘Stop’ . Team A then stops drinking and team B starts to throw the ball at the bottle and carrying forward the game. The game continues till one team has finished all their beer and they are declared winners .
Drinking Relay
Divide the group of people into two teams and get them to stand in a line with beer placed in front of each member . At the blow of the whistle, the first person lifts the glass and starts drinking the beer. After he is done, he has to turn the glass over to show that there is no more beer in the glass. Then , the next person starts drinking and so on. The next in line can only drink when the first person has emptied his glass. The team whose last member empties the glass ahead of others wins.
Herman the German
Even though this game seems simple, it is a lot of fun. It runs on the lines of ‘Who stole the cookie’. A person is chosen as‘Herman the German’ ( HTG ) and he has to get the game running. The other members sit in a random manner and are given names, better if they are confusing names like China Port No.1, Rum Master Blaster etc. The game starts with HTG saying – “HTG dropped a missile on China Port No.1, sir ” and China Port No. 1 has to reply with – “It wasn’t me, sir.” Then HTG replies – “Who then, sir” and it goes on. The sentence has to end with ‘sir’ and if it doesn’t, then the player has to down a beer. Similarly, if at any point the players fumble, they have to do the same. The tension makes the players forget things and there’s a whole lot of beer flowing as a result.

22、All those Christmas toys and books may spread more than good cheer. A new study has concluded that two common bacteria that cause colds, ear infections and sore throat can live for long periods on the surfaces of toys, books, and other items, even after being cleaned.
The findings just published in the journal Infection and Immunity show some bacteria continue to exist on surfaces for far longer than that has been believed.
The researchers said the study suggests that additional preventive measures may be necessary to prevent infections, especially in settings such as schools, daycare centers, and hospitals. “These findings should make us more cautious about bacteria in the environment since they change our ideas about how these particular bacteria are spread, ” said Anders Hakansson, assistant professor of microbiology andI immunology in UB. “Never before has any paper directly proved that these bacteria can survive well on various surfaces, including hands, and potentially spread between individuals. ”
S. pneumoniae(肺炎链球菌)is widespread in daycare centers and a common cause of hospital infections. Hakansson explained to us that it commonly causes sore throat and skin infections in children and adults.
To reach their conclusions, the UB researchers tested the surfaces of toys in a daycare center. They found four out of five toys tested positive for S. pneumoniae and several sur- faces, such as baby beds, tested positive for S. pyogenes(化脓性链球菌), even after being cleaned. The testing was done just before the center opening in the morning so it had been many hours since the last human contact.
“Bacterial colonization(细菌增殖)doesn’t, by itself, cause infection but it’s a necessary first step if an infection is going to become established in a human host, ” Hakansson explains, “Children, the elderly and others with weak immune systems are easily infected. ”

24、The snow cap of Mount Kilimanjaro, famous in literature and beloved by tourists, initially formed some 11,000 years ago, but will be gone in two decades, according to researchers who say the ice fields on Africa’s highest mountain shrank by 80 percent in the past century.
Lonnie G. Thompson, one professor from Ohio State University, said measurements using modern navigation satellites show that the oldest ice layers on the famous mountain were deposited during an extremely wet period starting about 11,700 years ago.The mountain appears in literature, most notably Ernest Hemingway’s “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” and some ancient beliefs in Africa hold the mountain to be a sacred place.
But a temperature rise in recent years is destroying the 150-foot-high blocks of ice that gave Kilimanjaro its unique white cap.“The ice will be gone by about 2030,” said Thompson. The disappearing ice already has reduced the amount of water in some Tanzanian rivers and the government fears that when Kilimanjaro is bald of snow the tourists will stop coming.
“Kilimanjaro is the number one foreign currency earner for the government of Tanzania,” said Thompson. “It has its own international airport and some 20,000 tourists every year. The question is how many will come if there are no ice fields on the mountain.”
Africa was not alone in the global drought. Thompson said other records show that civilizations during this period collapsed in India, the Middle East and South America.
Researchers put markers on the ice field blocks in 1962 and Thompson said measurements using satellites show the summit of the ice has been lowered by about 56 feet in 40 years. The____of the ice also has moved back more than six feet in the past two years, much smaller than before.
“That’s more than two meter’s worth of ice lost from a wall 164 feet (50 meters) high,” said Thompson. “That’s an enormous amount of ice.”

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Last Saturday David was taking a walk in the park near his home when he noticed a woman with a boy of about eight years old. When David passed them, he heard the woman yelling: “How stupid you are! You’re good at nothing.” David stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said nothing. He just stood there, looking upset.
David was reminded of his English teacher Mrs. Brown in middle school. After he entered middle school David lacked self-confidence because he was often made fun of by others. He was often told that he was good at nothing, which David believed.
But one day it all changed. That day, in an English writing class, Mrs. Brown asked them to read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter of the novel after they finished reading it. A few days later, David handed in his story. He didn’t give it much thought. But the next day to his surprise, the comment “well done” from Brown came into view the moment he turned to the page where the story was written. When David read that, he almost burst into tears. He had never expected to be praised. He suddenly gained some self-confidence.
That day after he returned home, he wrote another short story and gave it to Mrs. Brown the next morning. And again he was praised. David became very interested in writing. He often wrote short dories and asked Mrs. Brown to read them and correct them for him. Mrs. Brown always gave him good advice to improve them. One year later, David joined the school newspaper and became an editor of it. He gained his confidence and was hopeful about his future.
He succeeded in entering college and kept writing. Several years after graduating from college, he had his first book published, becoming famous as a writer in his country. And he owed his success to Mrs. Brown’s encouragement. Without her encouragement, his life might be very different now.
注意:1. 续写的词数应为150左右。
2. 请按照如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。
Inspired by his own life story, David decided to do something for that boy.
