二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、In this modern age, most of us have forgotten to be patient and get angry very quickly over minor things like a traffic jam, a baby crying and such things. It often seems so easy to get what we want right away that when we have to wait even a little while, it seems like we are waiting for ages. We used to be happy to wait 10 - 15 minutes it took to reheat food in the oven(烤箱),but now we’re impatient when waiting two minutes it takes in the microwave.

With the convenience provided by modern society, is patience still a virtue(美德) in the fast-paced world? To begin with, I'd like to share the meaning of the word “patience”. Generally it means being able to tolerate delay without getting impatient. However, it isn't necessarily a passive activity. It takes an active behavior, knowing when to take action and when not to.

So I would argue that patience is still -and always- a virtue. Sure, I used to be one of those who often stared at the microwave for the full two minutes it took to heat my food. And in the end, the food tasted bad. If I had had the patience to heat the food properly in the oven, I would have enjoyed a delicious meal.

Actually the benefits of patience go beyond just heating up our food. Patience is an exercise in self-control which shows that we can exercise good judgment. Lack of patience can cause us to make wrong decisions that negatively affect our health and happiness, waste our time, put us under a lot of stress and affect our relationships in a very negative way.

Everything in life happens for a reason. Sometimes we face an obstacle(障碍) because we need to grow in ways we didn't realize. It's not always obvious when that was happening, but with patience we will soon see clearly why it occurred and what we were meant to learn from it.

Taking time to think about our actions and being patient are a small price to pay when we determine the best possible solution to any problems.

【1】The author uses the example of reheating food to show that_______.

    A.more people lack patience now

    B.high technology brings more benefits

C.people have no time to enjoy the meal

D.the fast-paced life makes people stressed

【2】What could be inferred from Paragraph 4?

A.People under stress are more likely to get angry.

B.Patient people are less likely to meet difficulties.

C.People with self-control are easier to succeed.

D.Patient people tend to make better decisions.

【3】What does the author intend to tell us in Paragraph 5?

A.A wise man learns from experience.

B.A brave man is not afraid of challenges.

C.A man should be patient to deal with difficulties.

D.A man should find out reasons for things occurred.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.The causes of impatience

    B.Is patience really a virtue?

    C.Ways to exercise patience

D.What does the word patience mean?

  • 27、   When a big exam is coming up, you probably feel anxious about any wasted time and want to begin school as soon as you probably can.

But tens of thousands of British high school students will soon be getting up later. They’re taking part in a new experiment by Oxford University to see if later classes can improve their exam results.

Grades 10 students in the UK have to take the nationwide General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) exams. They have to pass these exams in order to study more advanced courses, and later apply for universities.

The Oxford University project means that GCSE students from more than 100 schools across England will start school at 10 am, more than one hour later than the current start time (8:50 am).

The project is based on scientific evidence that teenagers are “out of sync(同步)” with traditional school hours, the Telegraph reported. And what they need is more sleep in the morning.

“We know that something funny happens when you’re a teenager, in that you seem to be out of sync with the world,” said professor Colin Epsie, who is leading the study. “Your parents think it’s because you are lazy and opinionated(固执己见的)and everything will be OK if you could get to sleep earlier. But science is telling us that teenagers need to sleep more in the mornings.”

Everyone follows a natural cycle of sleep and wakefulness. Biology has decided that teenagers go to sleep around midnight and don’t feel fully awake until 9-10 am, according to scientists. That’s two hours later than adults. And their body clocks stay like this until the age of around 21 for males, and 19 for females.

“Society provides school for learning, but the brain provides sleep. So we are exploring the possibility that if you delay the schools start time until 10 am, that will improve learning performance,” said Epsie.

The results could be positive, based on previous studies.

An early study at the UK’s Monkseaton High School in 2009 found that starting an hour later improved grades in core subjects by 19 percent.

The Oxford project is expecting to publish the results in 2018. It’s time to wait and see whether scientists will give us an excuse to get up late.

1According to the article, students who take part in the Oxford University project_______.

A.will start school one hour earlier

B.will be guaranteed more sleeping time in the morning

C.will perform better academically than those who don’t participate

D.will no longer have to take GCSE exams

2We can infer from the article that ________ .

A.children and adults have different natural cycles of sleep and wakefulness

B.getting up late is a sign of laziness in the eyes of most British parents

C.the Oxford University project is targeted at all British high schools

D.there is still no scientific evidence that supports a late school start time

3What is the author’s attitude toward the Oxford University project ?

    A.Critical B.Uninterested

    C.Optimistic D.Doubtful

4What’s the best title of the article ?

A.It’s never too late to learn B.An excuse to get up late

C.The later you get up, the better you’ll learn D.Wake up late to excel

  • 28、A study on astronauts found that a short sleep during the day up to two and a half hours long improved working memory performance. Working memory includes focusing attention on one task while holding other tasks in memory, so a poor working memory could result in errors.

Taking a short sleep may make you think more clearly for the period right after you wake up and maybe hours into the day. Taking a short sleep once or twice a week could lower the risk of heart attacks, according to a 2019 study published in the journal Heart. After tracking more than 3,400 people between the ages of 35 and 75 for slightly more than five years, the researchers found that those who enjoyed occasional short sleep — once or twice a week, for five minutes to an hour — were 48% less likely than those who didn't take a short sleep to experience a heart attack or heart failure.

A lack of quality sleep could lead to overeating because not enough sleep is believed to stimulate hunger and stop hormone (荷尔蒙) signals that communicate fullness. The findings were important because women were at high risk of fatness and sleep disorders, the researchers said, which could both be driven by a high intake of food. Taking a short sleep has been found to improve your creativity. The right side of your brain might experience a strong mental feeling during a short sleep, research suggested. The right side is the hemisphere (半球体) most associated with creative tasks, such as imagination and thinking, while the left is more logical. Researchers monitoring the brain activity of 15 people found that the right side of their brain communicated busily with itself as well as with its left part. The left side of the brain, however, remained relatively quiet. In a January 2020 study of 2,214 Chinese adults aged 60 and older, those who took afternoon sleep for five minutes to two hours showed better mental response than those who didn’t take a short sleep.

【1】What do we know about the study on astronauts?

A.Taking a short sleep surely results in errors.

B.Improving working memory ability needs a long sleep.

C.Sleeping up to one and a half hour is needed during the day.

D.Having a good working memory may complete the task better.

【2】What can we infer about taking a short sleep from paragraph 2?

A.It may make you think clearly all day.

B.It could reduce the risk of heart attacks.

C.It made 48% of people free from a heart attack.

D.It may cause over 3,400 persons to suffer from heart attack.

【3】What does the underlined word “stimulate” in paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Refer to.

    B.Focus on.

    C.Give up.

    D.Result in.

【4】In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?

    A.Sports.

    B.Education.

    C.Health.

    D.Technology.
