  • 26、   What comes to mind when you think of a museum? Perhaps you picture an impressive building in a rather traditional design made of high-quality stone? Some might consider these customary institutions the best way to safeguard the future of typical educational topics. But according to the Museums Association, a museum is traditionally defined as a place enabling "… people to have more knowledge via various collections for inspiration, learning and enjoyment."

There are about 2500 museums in the UK; a few are bound to be considered a little unconventional, unusual or even unknown. However atypical your interest is, there's a museum for you!

What about Neil Cole's Adventures? This museum was opened by founder Neil Cole. Visitors to this Allendale attraction in Northumberland can see items ranging from stage properties used in the BBC series Dr Who to part of Thor's costume from the Avengers movie. "Science fiction has now become more mainstream so I thought people might want to see this," says Mr Cole.

If clocks are more to your taste, why not visit the Cuckooland Museum? Set up by brothers Roman and Maz Piekarski, this Cheshire collection of over 600 cuckoo clocks is considered to be the largest of its kind in the world— and all from the Black Forest region in Germany.

Then, you could visit the Viktor Wynd Museum of Curiosities in London. This offbeat, alternative institution is against the trend of educating visitors through written descriptions alongside its collections. Instead, it displays all of its rare treasures, which include dodo bones, shrunken heads and a collection of McDonald's Happy Meal toys, with no caption at all.

There are many more wonderful institutions out there that march to the beat of their own drum. All you have to do is go and find them!

1What do the traditional museums serve to do?

A.To educate kids more about the world. B.To help people explore more

C.To show visitors a specialized field. D.To help understand the real life.

2What does Neil Cole's Adventures focus on?

    A.Allendale scenery. B.Stage properties.

    C.Science fiction. D.The Avengers movies.

3Which of the following museums has no written explanation for visitors?

    A.The Museum Association. B.Neil Cole's Adventures.

C.The Cuckooland Museum. D.The Viktor Wynd Museum.

  • 27、   On the top of millions of homes and offices, affordable and efficient solar panels provide further smaller-scale- electricity during daylight hours. People drive zero-emission (排放) cars that were developed like Audi and BMW which run on hydrogen fuel—created using solar energy which turns waste water into hydrogen and oxygen. Solar energy is potential power in the continuous sunlight of space.

The idea of solar power and its potential to be Earth’s giant power source has roots way back before the threat of climate change and using up petrol. The first idea of solar energy was developed back in 1883, when writer Isaac Asimov published a 1941 story, describing a space station beaming down vast amounts of solar energy using microwave beams. US scientist Peter Glaser drew up plans in 1968 to make Asimov’s dreams a reality, only to be stopped by the technological limitations of the time.

But technologies for a solar-powered world are here today, quieting critics who claim global solar power will never overcome issues over long-distance transmission from sunny to less sunny areas, or find storage solutions to allow it to carry on making power when it gets dark.

China, for instance, is already building high-voltage power lines to spread output across the country from quickly developing solar power facilities. The first three months of 2015, alone, saw the Asian giant add 5 gigawatts (千兆瓦) of solar capacity to the entire solar supply of major European nation like France.

Storage solutions already being used worldwide have successfully proved the working of two methods. One uses solar energy to create melt salts, whose heat-keeping qualities allow them to provide the power to drive electricity turbines (涡轮机) through the night. Other solar plants, meanwhile, are using the sun’s rays to compress gas that is then released after dark to drive those turbines.

1Why are developed Audi and BMW called zero-emission cars?

A.They run on the energy made from electricity.

B.They can be powered by using gases and winds.

C.They can be driven by the energy from solar panels.

D.They use hydrogen fuel made from waste water by solar energy.

2What prevented Peter Glaser from realizing Asimov’s dreams?

    A.Solar energy’s high cost. B.Technological limitations.

C.Lack of experience on solar power. D.Other scientists’ disagreement.

3What can we know about solar power?

A.It is only used in sunny areas. B.It is hardly used in less sunny areas.

C.It can be transmitted long distance. D.It can never be made in dark conditions.

4What is the best title of this text?

A.Solar Energy Is Widely Used B.How To Store Solar Energy

C.Solar Energy—a Potential Power D.Technologies Limit Solar Energy

  • 28、   As a rule, a child who has once been happy with a tale likes to have it retold in almost the same words, but this should not lead parents to treat printed fairy stories as formal texts. It is always much better to tell a story than read it out of a book, and, if a parent can produce what, in the actual situation of the time and the child, is an improvement on the printed text, so much the better.

A charge made against fairy tales is that they harm the child by frightening him or making him sad thinking. To prove the latter, one would have to show in a controlled experiment that children who have read fairy stories were more often sorry for cruelty than those who had not. As to fears, there are, I think, some cases of children being dangerously terrified by some fairy story. Often, however, this arises from the child having heard the story once. Familiarity with the story by repetition turns the pain of fear into the pleasure of a fear faced and mastered.

There are also people who object to fairy stories on the grounds that they are not objectively true, that giants, witches, two-headed dragons, magic carpets, etc. do not exist; and that, instead of being fond of the strange side in fairy tales, the child should be taught to learn the reality by studying history. I find such people, I must say, so peculiar(奇怪的) that I do not know how to argue with them. If their case were sound, the world should be full of mad men attempting to fly from New York to Philadelphia on a stick or covering a telephone with kisses in the belief that it was their beloved girlfriend.

No fairy story ever declared to be a description of the real world and no clever child has ever believed that it was.

1The author considers that a fairy story is more effective when   .

A.it is repeated without any change B.it is treated as a joke

C.some changes are made to it by a parent D.it is set in the present

2According to the passage, great fear can take place in a child when the story is   .

    A.in a realistic setting B.told in a different way

C.repeated too often D.heard for the first time

3The advantage claimed for repeating fairy stories to young children is that it   .

A.develops their power of memory B.makes them less fearful

C.makes them believe there is more to be afraid of D.encourages them not to have strange beliefs

4One of the reasons why some people are not in favor of fairy tales is that   .

A.they are full of history B.they make teachers of history difficult to teach

C.they are not interesting D.they are just made up of unreal stories

A.The tide rises, the tide falls

B.The twilight darkens, the curlew calls

C.Along the sea-sands damp and brown

D.The traveler hastens toward the town

3In stanza 2, the word “Efface” in line 4 is the closest to ________ in meaning.

    A.Draw B.engrave

    C.erase D.impress

  • 33、   A video last week showed a mini house in a high chair eating a bowl of carrots. It might seem ridiculous, but it might also be the logical extension of a growing trend; treating animals as human and treating pet as children, _______ to the toddler (学步的小孩)who eats from the same chair.

_______ of this attitude are everywhere, ranging from the innocent to the near-insane. Some people _______ their pets for Halloween, throw them birthday parties, or create social media accounts for them. Five-star cat resorts offer spa services. Yoga studios now offer “doga” classes. Stores sell pet pans and bikinis, and doctors will perform cosmetic surgery in case your pet needs a facelift.

There seems to be _______ between pets and children. An increasingly large group of people who genuinely believe that having a pet is the same thing as being a parent. They _______ the language of parenthood with their pets, calling themselves “mommy” or “daddy” when talking to their “baby”. Of course, it’s one thing to use such language _______, as an expression of love or a reflection of the great joy that pets, like children, can create. But it’s quite another to use this language literally(照字面意思地).

Using _______ labels for things not only blurs (使模糊)the real lines between pets and people but also leads to dangerous misbelief. What if a woman thinks she knows what a mon of two kids if going through because she’s a “mom” to two cats or a man believes having a baby won’t be much different from being a “dad” to a dog?

Every pet has its own parent—another cat or dog that feed and teaches it to survive in the animal kingdom. Our love for pets results from their _______ from us, but once we have them, we treat them as people, taming and teaching them how to pee(撒尿)in the tight place and not drink from the toilet. Sometimes, this goes _______, leading to horrible industries like pet cosmetic surgery. But we can’t call our role with pets “parenting” when we do the _______ of what a pets parent would do.

_______, “pet parents” claim that they do everything real parents do – feed, bathe, cuddle, clean up, care for, and love. Indeed, all these actions constitute part of the routines of true parenthood. But pet parents cannot teach character and morality to cats and dogs, which is the most important job of a parent. Having a child means _______ another mind and soul for adulthood and independence. Having a pet child means keeping an animal obedient and _______ so it never leaves as a child will.

Pet and children serve different roles. Ignoring or denying these differences _______ neither creatures nor people. Calling a pet a child, or yourself its parent, reflects a _______ of what animals are and what parenting is. We can call pets “pets” without loving them any less.

Expressions about water are almost as common as water itself. But many of the expressions using water have unpleasant meanings.

The expression “to be in hot water” is one of them. It is a very old expression, which can be 1 back to 500 years ago. The expression is used to mean being in trouble. One story says it got that meaning from the custom of throwing extremely hot water down on enemies attacking a castle.

Being in “deep water” is almost the same as being in “hot water”. When you are in deep water, you are in a difficult 2. Imagine a person who cannot swim being thrown in water over his head. You are in deep water when you are facing a problem that you do not have the ability to solve. The problem is too deep. You can be in deep water, for example, if you invest in stocks in complete 3 of the stock market.

    My daughter

(A story told by a father, a famous actor)

My wife and I only had the one child. We had Amy.

I see her as my best friend. I think she’d always come to me first if she had a problem. We have the same sense of humor, and share interests. 1 I don’t mind animals, she’s completely fascinated with them, and she has always had dogs, cats, horses, and goldfish in her life.

We were 2 (close) when she was about four, which I think is a lovely age for a child. They know the parents best, and don’t have outside contacts. She must have grown up suddenly when she went to school, because I remember her growing away from her family slightly. Any father who has a teenager daughter comes across an extraordinary collection of people, and there seemed to be an endless stream of strange young men 3 (come) through our house. By the time I learned their names they 4 (go) away and I had to start learning a new lot.

I wanted more than anything else for her to be happy in 5 she was doing, and I was prepared to pull strings to help her on her way. When she left a good school she decided she wanted to become an actress so I got her into drama school. It wasn’t to her liking so she joined a theatre group and began doing bits and pieces in films. She was doing well, but then gave it up. She probably found it boring. Then she took up social work, and finally went to work 6a designer and he became her husband. And that’s really the story of her life. She must be happy with him—they’re always together.

We have such similar tastes in books and music 7 I used to take her to see an opera, which is my big passion. However, I don’t think she likes it very much. She doesn’t come with me anymore.

I don’t think she’s a big television watcher. She knows when I’m on the television, and she 8 watch, but I don’t know. It’s not the kind of thing she tells me.

We’re very grateful for Amy. She’s a good daughter as daughters go. We’re looking forward to being grandparents.

After a long day, Zhang Tian finally got back to his small room, feeling tired. He had started working at seven in the morning, and it was eight in the evening now. He had to prepare his lessons for the following day. This is a typical day for Zhang Tian. Coming to Guizhou Province to teach has been quite an experience for him.

Zhang Tian graduated from university and got a teacher's certificate last year. His parents, like most, hoped he would go to a big city to find a teaching job. Likewise, his friends all left his hometown for work in Shanghai or Beijing. Zhang Tian felt differently, however. He wanted to start a new lifestyle. He had met wonderful teachers from small villages during his early school years and he was inspired by them to go and teach where he was needed the most. For that reason he applied for and became a volunteer teacher in a village school. Bringing with him lots of books, clothes, and two pairs of trainers, Zhang Tian travelled to the village with an eager heart. He imagined all sorts of exciting things about living independently and teaching in a village.

However, not everything lived up to Zhang Tian's hopes. The school had just three teachers and Zhang Tian was the only English teacher. The other two local teachers were responsible for maths and Chinese. The school was much smaller than he had expected, with only three classrooms. In front of the classrooms, there was a playground which got dusty on windy days and muddy on rainy days. Living in the village was also more challenging than he had thought. The power and water supplies were unstable, so he could only shower every three or four days, and he had to learn how to cook.
