22、A bright and impressive bus carrying fresh local produce appeared in a community of North Carolina in June 2022. It was the first pay-what-you-can Mobile Market. As the name implies, shoppers could pay any price out of their own will. Even the suggested price was about 25% less than that offered in grocery stores. This market gave shoppers a dignified way to provide food for their families regardless of their budget.
Seeing the joy in shoppers’ eyes, Will Komegay, the founder of this non-profit program—Mobile Market, felt a sense of accomplishment. He had once witnessed a wasteful and unfortunate reality. At that time, countless pounds of food had to be thrown away by farmers due to the interruption in the supply chain. Meanwhile, millions of people were struggling to afford enough food to feed their families. Kornegay didn’t want to stand by.
With much working experience in food industry and background about how food system was designed, Kornegay decided to use his company’s vast network of farmer and food industry relationships to address the issue. His team used buses to bridge the farmers, the food industries and communities that needed food most. Thousands of pounds of food that was sourced from local partners was placed into homes.
Kornegay still remembered how the first Mobile Market came into being. His team made a detailed plan and chose the colors and images they preferred. Then they purchased a “retired” school bus and renovated it, giving it a new different look and equipping it with refrigerators and freezers. Thus was born the first Mobile Market.
To date, the project has partnered with dozens of local farmers and food producers and has already served an estimated 10,000 families over 150,000 pounds of food. In 2023, the team hope to serve 80 sites across 20 counties in Eastern North Carolina. Their vision is to perfect the project where they live, and scale into every state nationwide.
【1】What is the purpose of the Mobile Market?
A.To boost the income of local residents.
B.To promote sales in local grocery stores.
C.To raise money for the family with a tight budget.
D.To enable people to buy food at an affordable price.
【2】How did Kornegay make the program work?
A.He ensured the food safety.
B.He improved the supply chain.
C.He increased the food production.
D.He built a network between communities.
【3】What does the underlined word “renovated” mean in paragraph 4?
A.Transformed.
B.Replaced.
C.Photographed.
D.Exchanged.
【4】What is the prospect of the Mobile Market according to the last paragraph?

D.It is estimated to provide worldwide service.
23、Digital technologies are taking up too much of our time and attention. Many of us will spend a significant part of our lives staring at screens, missing out on satisfying relationships and feeling more emotional pain. For many years, we’ve been taught that the solution to this potential harm is some form of digital detox (脱瘾), which mainly shows us what not to do after our digital addiction. 【1】 Try the following three steps to achieve balance in your and your family’s digital life:
Determine your problem times
Identify the times and situations when being on screens is making your life worse. It could be when you are streaming a TV series right before bed, feeling depressed afterward and losing hours of sleep. Or you could be getting stuck on your device at the dinner table and end up getting distracted. 【2】 Identify your top two or three problem situations.
【3】
Once you identify the pain points, for example, scrolling (滚动浏览) on TikTok for hours keeps you from sleeping and makes you feel depressed afterward), ask yourself: What is screen time replacing and what goals is it serving? In other words, what are you actually hungry for? You might be endlessly scrolling because you want to feel uplifted at the end of the day. Write down the things you really want.
Try a substitute
【4】 It’s crucial to pick something that consistently makes you feel good. For example, if your goal is social connection, make plans for a nice meal with a friend or take that weekly meeting in person rather than via Zoom. If your goal is inspiration, schedule time for oil painting, reading historical fiction or whatever it is that uplifts you. 【5】 And at last, you will become empowered, healthy and wise digital citizens.
A.Identify your true desire.
B.Determine your pain points.
C.Pretty soon, these replacements will make you feel more satisfied.
D.But the only way to truly gain control is to take positive steps in advance.
E.Or maybe you are inefficient at work because you’re doing too much online shopping.
F.Ask yourself how you can meet those needs through something other than screen time.
G.If your digital life is out of balance, reducing time on devices is an important first step.
24、 Sophia Joffe is a Toronto-area high school student at Country Day School who created eLearn. fyi : an online database compiled (编译)of more than 300 online learning tools. Students are able to access her website to create an online learning profile where they can manage their studies in an approach.
The Grade 12 student used her own experience shifting from a classroom setting to an online platform as inspiration for her program.
“It was really difficult and it was really stressful knowing that right after the outbreak of the COVID-19 we jumped into a totally new online learning system --- it was quite different from an in-class instruction," said Joffe in an interview with CTV's Your Morning on Friday.
She expected that there would be added resources to help students cope as they shifted to an online learning environment9 but her expectations fell short. Not only were there few available, but resources lacked quality, she said.
Like many students, Joffe is concerned the COVID-19 pandemic has caused learning loss for many students. Her goal isn't only to reduce the stress the pandemic has put on students, but remove learning loss altogether.
As was first reported in the New York Times, Joffe invested $ 19 — the cost of hosting a website -- and created eLearn. fyi. By October, Joffe's online traffic had 500 unique visitors from more than 40 countries. The program categorizes grades from Kindergarten to Grade 12, and then breaks subjects down, making it easier for students to digest classroom material in a simple way. Joffe's website clearly organizes students' classes and takes them to simple apps and websites that help guide them through any given subject.
Joffe hopes the Canadian government will one day work in partnership with tech companies to modernize the learning experience and the platforms like Netflix could pose an opportunity where students can stream classes at their own pace while having their entire education at their fingertips.
【1】What did Sophia Joffe initially think of online learning?
A.It was less different from classroom learning.
B.It really made her feel more or less stressed.
C.It was an effective way to fight the COVID-19.
D.It provided a good opportunity to create eLearn. fyi.
【2】What made Sophia upset at the beginning of online study?
A.Not getting adequate and qualified resources.
B.Not knowing how to obtain study materials.
C.Having no experience on running a website.
D.Finding it a tough job to host a website.
【3】Why did Sophia create eLearn. fyi?
A.To gain some income by investing a small sum.
B.To get her online database far more perfect.
C.To collect some useful learning resources.
D.To give a hand to those who are learning online.
【4】What can be inferred according to the sixth paragraph?
A.The eLearn. fyi has brought Joffe a big income.
B.Joffe has benefited students at home and abroad.
C.Joffe also sells some learning apps to students.
D.The eLearn. fyi creates a similar classroom environment.
25、Thieving Monkeys — Name Your Price
Human beings are not the only species able to negotiate a deal.
If you visit Uluwatu temple in Bali, be careful. The long-tailed macaques (猕猴) there are well-known thieves. They make a living by _________ visitors of their possessions and then holding those objects until a payment in the form of food is paid. That is quite clever. But professor Jean-Baptiste Leca wondered whether these monkeys are cleverer still. Sometimes, they do not accept the first _________ and hold out for more. He therefore asked himself whether macaques are able to _________ how valuable an object is to its owner, and factor that into their negotiations.
Professor Leca and his colleagues conducted their experiment by wandering around the temple with video cameras, recording the activities of the monkeys. Every time they saw a monkey show interest in a _________ tourist, they recorded the interaction. Not all attempts at robbery were successful. But of those that were, they analysed the _________ of almost 2,200.
To work out what was going on, they had first to establish the _________ values of food rewards to monkeys, and of stealable objects to people. The temple staff keep three sorts of reward available for use in negotiations _________ tourists who want to get their property back: raw eggs, biscuits and small bags of fruit. Different monkeys have different _________, but professor Leca established these for _________ animals by offering them choices between pairs of treats in an initial experiment.
To confirm which stealable objects are most __________ by people, they divided them into six classes: empty containers, such as phone cases and camera bags; accessories such as key rings; hats and headgear; shoes; spectacles and sunglasses; and electronics and wallets. They then observed, from the video recordings, how often victims __________ to bargain with the thief for the return of property belonging to different classes, and __________ classified objects into low value (the first two classes on the list), medium value (the second two) and high value (the third two).
They found that monkeys do have a good sense of what they are doing — __________, adults and sub-adults do. These animals have a preference for stealing high-value items, and will often hold out either for more rewards, or for better ones, if they are in possession of such items. But this is something that they have to learn how to do as they grow up. Young ones make no such __________, and sub-adults are less good at doing so than adults.
