二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Throughout most states of the USA, there are countless secret swimming holes, and following are 4 of them.

    Havasu Falls (Arizona)

This attractive waterfall in the Grand Canyon is undoubtedly a destination spot requiring a 10-mile walk to the falls. You can take a guided tour to the falls, or make it on your own. The Havasu Falls are on the Havasupai Indian Reservation, which means you'll need to get a permit to visit — this has become increasingly difficult as more people discover this hidden place.

    Hamilton Pool (Austin)

Hamilton Pool was created when an underground river's roof fell down suddenly; exposing what is now the swimming hole and creating a 50-foot waterfall that flows over the above limestone(石灰岩). You'll have to reserve beforehand to gain entry to the Hamilton Pool Preserve.

    Chutes and Ladders (Maui)

To get to this secret swimming hole, you'll have to take a rope 40 feet down the face of a cliff, and then climb down about 8 feet of lava rock to the pool. Once there, however, you'll be glad you made the journey. The swimming hole is on the edge of the ocean — a natural pool, you could say — with a depth that invites you to jump in without crowds of people around to watch.

    Homestead Crater (Utah)

The Homestead Crater is hidden under a rock dome(圆顶) with an opening at the top that allows for sunlight and air. It was once only accessible by that top opening, but there is now easy access through a side path for visitors. Go for a swim in this beautiful mineral water spring.

1People need an official written statement to visit _________.

    A.Havasu Falls B.Hamilton Pool

    C.Chutes and Ladders D.Homestead Crater

2What do you need to get to Chutes and Ladders?

    A.A tour guide. B.An invitation.

C.More outdoor skills. D.Reservation in advance.

3Which of the following can best describe the four places?

A.They are hidden in remote areas. B.They are shaped by limestone.

C.They are created by local people. D.They are accessible through a hole.

  • 27、   Homemade lemonade is an essential taste of summerBut concentrates (浓缩汁)and powders simply won't be enough.

Luckily, great homemade lemonade is as easy as remembering a few numbers3-1-1-1.3 cups of cold water,1 cup of lemon juice, 1 cup of sugar and 1 more cup of water to make the sugar syrup(糖浆).

When shopping for lemons for lemonade, buy large lemons that feel heavy and are squeezable. I find that half the lemon is rind(外皮) and there is very little juice. For that reason, I always buy a couple extra. If I think I can get 1 cup of juice from 6 lemons. I buy 8.

As soon as I bring them home. I soak the lemons in a solution of white vinegar and water to minimize any molding or rottingOften, a bag of lemons with one slightly mold(发发霉的)lemon becomes a whole bag of rotten lemons during a night if you don't do thisAnd you don't have to stop at lemons this is a great way to wash all fruits and vegetables.

Before you juice them, soak the lemons in warm water or microwave them for 10 secondsThe heat relaxes the juice bags and makes it easier to remove the most juice from each lemonThen, before you cut them in half, roll the lemons on the counter with your palm, using some powerThis also helps get the juices flowing.

Once the juice is strained(过滤)of excess pulp and seeds, and the simple syrup is cooled, you are ready to mix your lemonade. This can be done up to 2 days in advance. Also, be careful not to add too much water. The lemonade should be slightly concentrated because the ice in the glass will make the liquid weaker a bit. For that reason, I only add the ice to the glasses.

1Why does the author always buy a couple extra when shopping for lemons for lemonade?

A.Because the author loves lemons a lot B.Because a lemon contains little juice

C.Because the majority of a lemon is rind D.Because the lemon juice is tough to get

2The speed of mold affecting lemons seems to be ____.

    A.uncertain B.slow C.limited D.fast

3What should be done to make the lemonade slightly concentrated?

A.Straining the juice 2 days in advance B.Making syrup cool as early as possible

C.Not adding too much water D.Not adding ice to theglasses

4What is the best title for the passage?

A.Homemade lemonadea unique taste of summer

B.The secrets of making great lemonade in summer

C.How to choose lemons in shops

    D.How to make lemonade concentrated

  • 29、   A food additive (添加剂) is any substance that is added to food. Many people are put off by the idea of “chemicals in food.” The truth is that all food is made up of chemicals. Natural substances like milk, as well as man-made ones like drinks on sale in the market, can be described by chemical formulas. Some chemical substances are indeed harmful, but a person who refused to consume any chemicals would find nothing to eat.

The things we eat can be divided into natural and man-made substances. Some people feel that only natural foods are healthy and that all man-made ingredients are to be avoided. But many natural chemicals, found in plants and animals, are harmful when eaten, and some laboratory-made substances increase the nutritional value of food. Other chemicals have natural and man-made forms that are exactly alike: vitamin C is vitamin C, whether it comes from a test tube or from an orange. Like “chemical”, “man-made” doesn’t necessarily mean “not fit to eat”.

Food additives are used for many reasons. We add sugar and salt and other things to foods we prepare at home to make them taste better. Food producers have developed a range of additives that stabilize, thicken, harden, keep wet, keep firm, or improve the appearance of their products. Additives can make food more convenient or nutritious, give it a longer shelf life, and make it more attractive to the consumer, thus increasing the sales and profits of the producers.

Food additives are presently the centre of a storm of serious argument. Food producers have been known to use additives that have not been proved safe; some substances in common use have been proved unsafe and have been taken off the market. Many people feel there’s a risk of eating food to which anything has been added. But food additives are now regulated by the FDA of the federal government, and new additives will go through strict testing before they can be placed on the market. For most people, the chances of developing serious side effects (副作用) from the long-term use of presently approved (批准) food additives are very small.

1From the passage we can learn that .

    A. natural foods are much safer than man-made ones

    B. it is right to refuse chemicals in food

    C. food additives are harmful to our health

    D. all foods have chemical substances

2Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

    A. Food additives can improve the quality of foods in many ways.

    B. To ensure food safety, the FDA will stop food additives.

    C. Foods free of additives can keep a much longer shelf life.

    D. Foods with more additives have higher nutritional value.

3We can infer from the regulation to the food additives by the FDA that .

    A. new additives will be approved more easily than before

    B. food with common-used additives will be taken off the market

    C. food additives will be used in a safer and more scientific way

    D. food producers won’t be allowed to use new food additives

4According to the writer, the food additive is .

    A. worrying B. acceptable

    C. poisonous D. avoidable

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

“Life of Pi” is narrated by an older Pi and takes place in the present as he tells his life story to a writer. Pi begins with how he got his name and how his family owned a zoo, but eventually leads into his family needing to leave India for financial 1. The heart of the story lies in Pi as a young man and the time he spent out at sea on a lifeboat with a tiger named Richard Parker, but getting to that point is quite an ordeal(苦难考验). Pi loses everything and everyone close to him in the blink of an eye and he doesn’t 2 on making what feels like an unbreakable bond with a Bengal tiger.

The 3 film offers a rather marvelous message about religion as Pi discusses the experimentation with several different religions as a young boy. Even though it seems kind of silly that a boy has 4 so many religions at one point in his life, it portrays a/an 5 message in a light that doesn’t seem too preachy(说教的). But the religious aspect is really only a backdrop for being on your own 6 to finding who you really are. Feeling so alone for so long and having Pi talk about not being alone and not getting to say goodbye to those he cared about most is one of those things that just hits you really hard.

While witnessing Pi attempt to tame Richard Parker is really 7, there are so many unbelievable sights to witness in “Life of Pi”. There’s the whale, the jellyfish, the flying fish, that 8 storm, and that seaweed island with all of the meerkats (a kind of monkey). “Life of Pi” never really lets up on being 9 breathtaking and amazing from beginning to end.

“Life of Pi” is pleasantly satisfying. With a heartfelt message, beautiful visuals, and stunning camera work. “Life of Pi” is truly a sight to behold and illustrates how 10 3D can be to a film that isn’t just a summer hit or blockbuster.

  • 32、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

It was a Saturday afternoon. The color of the sky was changing, first light gray, then dark gray, and finally dark and dense. The wind was blowing heavily, and the trees were swaying in the strong wind. It began to rain cats and dogs. Soon, the road was filled with puddles from the rain.

On such a stormy afternoon, my mother took my fiveyearold brother, Christopher, and me to a new big toy store she had read about in the newspaper. “So many toys,” the advertisement had shouted in full and flashy color, “that we had to get a huge warehouse to fit them all!”

Christopher and I couldn't have been more excited. We ran across the parking lot, through the cold and biting rain, as fast as our little legs could carry us. We left our mother outside to battle with the frustrating umbrella, which never worked when she wanted it to. “Christine! Take care of your young brother!” Mother shouted at the top of her voice.

“Christine! I'm going to find the Lego section (乐高积木区)! There's a new pirate ship I want, and I have four dollars! Maybe I can buy it!” Christopher exclaimed and ran off excitedly. I only half heard him. I took a right turn and, to my wideeyed delight, found myself in the midst of the Barbie (芭比) World.

I was studying a Barbie and doing some simple math in my head when suddenly an earthshaking clap of thunder roared from the storm outside. I jumped at the noise, dropping the doll to the floor. The lights flickered (闪烁) once and died, covering everything in a blanket of blackness. Thunder continued to shake the sky and lightning illuminated the store for seconds, casting frightening shadows on my mind.
