“Oh,” the little boy replied with his head down. Looking up, he said, “Dad, can I please borrow $30?” The father got angry and complained, “If the only reason you asked about my pay is that you can borrow some money to buy a useless toy, then you’d better go back to your room. I work hard every day and I do not like this rude behavior.”
The little boy quietly went to his room and closed the door. After about an hour or so, the man calmed down. He went to the boy’s room and opened the door. “Are you sleeping, son?” he asked. “No Dad, I’m awake,” the boy replied. “I’ve been thinking — maybe I was too hard on you earlier,” his father said. “Here’s the $30 you asked for.”
The little boy sat straight up with a smile. Then, reaching under his pillow, he took out $20 that he had hidden away. The man became furious and he wanted to teach his son a lesson. A new standard (标准) for labor (劳动) education recently came out. Students in primary and middle school will have at least one class a week to try and experience different kinds of labor and learn different life skills and even job skills. The standard includes different tasks for each grade. For example, fifth and sixth-graders learn to cook two or three common dishes, like fried eggs or scrambled eggs with tomato (番茄炒蛋).
This move is to enrich Chinese students’ life and build their character through labor. Chinese school education didn’t pay enough attention (重视) to this in the past. According to a 2019 report, Chinese kids only do 12 minutes of practical activity each day, while US kids do 1.2 hours each day, China Daily reported.

People call Qin the “King of Breaststroke (蛙泳之王)” for his breaststroke achievements in 2023. 【2】 At the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, the 24-year-old broke five Asian records and became the first swimmer in history to win all three breaststroke golds at a single edition (单届).
【3】 It’s harder to swim fast because all the strokes (划水) in breaststroke happen under the water. This makes the water push back on the swimmer more, and it takes a lot of skill to swim well. “Even a small change in how you move your hands can make you swim faster or slower, I only need one to swim as far as they do.”
Even though Qin has won many awards, he is still modest. 【4】 “I’m just a breaststroke swimmer,” Qin said.
