21、 When I was 12 years old, I already knew that my teen years were going to be the worst years at my life. I was a total outsider, bullied at school. I felt completely alone in my small town.
But by starting to do volunteer work when I was 14, I turned my problem into a passion for helping others. The opportunity to practice kindness made me feel like my life had a greater purpose. The more positive energy I shared, the more kindness and appreciation I received. I realized that my purpose in life would be to reach out to people, specifically teenagers, and help them feel less alone.
Books were my time friends back then. I was so thankful that the authors wrote those books. The kindness they offered me with their books saved my life. One of my biggest dreams was to become an author so I could write books that would help other teenagers the way those books helped me.
After surviving terrible experiences at school and at home, I made a choice to take the optimistic, positive road in the next steps of my journey. My dream career is what I am doing now. I have been a full-time author of teen novels since 2007 and am grateful for this amazing opportunity to reach out to readers every single day.
Kindness saved me when I needed help the most. Even small acts of kindness can change someone’s life. You never know what someone else is going through. But by practicing daily kindness, you become an architect of positive change.

22、 While Jennifer was at home taking an online exam for her business law class, a monitor(监控器)a few hundred miles away was watching her every move.
Using a web camera equipped in Jennifer's Los Angeles apartment, the monitor in Phoenix tracked how frequently her eyes moved from the computer screen and listened for the secret sounds of a possible helper in the room. Her Internet access was locked remotely to prevent Internet searches, and her typing style was analyzed to make sure she was who she said she was: Did she enter her student number at the same speed as she had in the past? Or was she slowing down?
In the battle against cheating, this is the cutting edge and a key to encourage honesty in the booming field of online education. This technology gives trust to the entire system, to the institution and to online education in general. Only with solid measures against cheating, experts say, can Internet universities show that their exams and diplomas are valid — that students haven't searched the Internet to get the right answers.
Although online classes have existed for more than a decade, the concern over cheating has become sharper in the last year with the growth of "open online courses". Private colleges, public universities and corporations are jumping into the online education field, spending millions of dollars to attract potential students, while also taking steps to help guarantee honesty at a distance.
Aside from the web cameras, a number of other high-tech methods are becoming increasingly popular. Among them are programs that check students’ identities using personal information, such as the telephone numbers they once used.
Other programs can produce unique exams by drawing on a large list of questions and can recognize possible cheaters by analyzing whether difficult test questions are answered at the same speed as easy ones. As in many university classes, term papers are scanned against some large Internet data banks for cheating.
【1】Why was Jennifer watched in an online exam?
A.To correct her typing mistakes.
B.To find her secrets in the room.
C.To keep her from dishonest deeds.
D.To prevent her from slowing down.
【2】What does the underlined expression "cutting edge" in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.sharpening tool B.advanced technique
C.effective rule D.dividing line
【3】How can some programs find out possible cheaters?
A.By scanning the Internet test questions.
B.By checking the question answering speed.
C.By producing a large number of questions.
D.By giving difficult test questions.
23、Language is part of our daily lives, no matter where we live in the world. Similarly, music is a part of many people’s lives. 【1】 Here are some of their similarities.
Both language and music have a writing system
In English we record language using the alphabet, which is a collection of letters. Similarly, we use notes to keep a record of music. Just as you are reading this collection of letters on the paper and find meaning in it, musicians read notes and create meaning in the form of music which we can hear. 【2】 For example, we can read the ideas or hear the composition of someone who lived hundreds of years ago, which is really quite exciting.
Both vary with culture
【3】 In the same way, we know that styles of music are different around the world, which gives us the opportunity to explore many different cultures through their music. This also means that there is something for everyone! Even if you don’t like Britpop melodies, you may love the energy of Latin American salsa music.
Both share emotion
How do you know that I am angry? 【4】 Similarly, music can sound angry, sad or happy. Music can show you exactly how the composer was or is feeling, and allows us to share that emotion. When you feel happy, you might want to sing and dance to a happy song. 【5】
A.Different culture makes different music.
B.Both language and music play a huge role in our lives.
C.You can guess where someone is from by listening to their language.
D.By reading pieces of text or music, we are able to share experiences through time.
E.In contrast, you have probably also listened to sad music when you were feeling down.
F.Of course, you may be able to see it in my face, but you will know for sure through my words.
G.We have all used music to express our emotions, often combining it with language in the form of song lyrics.
24、For many years now, scientists have reported that we, as human beings, are affecting and changing the Earth’s climate. They say that, in particular, the last 50 years has seen a huge increase in the quantity of greenhouse gases being released into our atmosphere from factories and vehicles, and that this increase is speeding up the process known as global warming. Scientists believe global warming to be by far the biggest environmental problem of the 21st century. So what is it, how is it a danger, and why is it relevant to us?
Global warming is the term used to indicate a rise in the Earth’s temperature which, in turn, causes changes to the Earth’s climate. Scientists have discovered that the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which trap the heat from the Sun, control the temperature. When the greenhouse gases increase, more heat is trapped and the Earth’s temperature rises.
The Earth’s temperature has increased by one degree Fahrenheit in the last 100 years. Much of this has been attributed to human activities, such as increased industry, agriculture, the falling of forests, the rise in transport and the burning of fuels.
One degree Fahrenheit may not sound like much, but if we continue to produce greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, we will have to face the repercussions(影响、后果). Scientists warn that global warming will cause catastrophic climate changes, including more frequent flooding, drought and extreme weather. The increase in pollution will also cause serious health impacts and affect agriculture directly.
The melting of the polar ice caps will also have direct consequences, with sea levels rising causing flooding in low-lying areas, such as islands and coastal cities.
So, how can we stop this from happening? Governments everywhere have a responsibility to reduce the production of greenhouse gases. But we can make small changes too. Every person needs to play his/her part. Suggestions include recycling, using public transport, using less water at home, using more energy efficient appliances and switching off lights. Small personal changes will add up to big changes worldwide if we all develop these habits for all of our lives, that is, 70 years or so.
【1】What is by far the biggest environmental problem of the twenty-first century?
A.Air pollution.
B.Greenhouse gases.
C.Climate changes.
D.Global warming.
【2】How long did it take the Earth’s temperature to increase by one degree Fahrenheit?
A.50 years.
B.21 years.
C.A century.
D.70 years.
【3】What is the best summary of this passage?
A.Global warming has become so serious that everyone should take action.
B.Let me introduce global warming to you in detail.
C.Govemments of all countries should call on everyone to take action.
D.It’s never too late for everyone to take steps to prevent global warming.
【4】What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A.The author affirms that govemments should take action firstly.
B.The author believes we will slop global warming some day.
C.The author takes it for granted that small personal changes can have a small influence.
D.The author suggests everyone should play a role in reducing the production of green gases.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写词数应为80左右。
It was such a nice day and it’s Sunday. I left for the park with my skateboard. There were so many kids in the central square. The parents chatted merrily in small groups, occasionally taking a glance at their kids. I skated for about half an hour and took a break on the nearby bench. Early summer morning was always the best time, the bird chirping in the trees and cool winds blowing in my face. How could I miss it? Dad said he was going to mow the lawn in the yard on the weekend and asked whether I could help. I made an excuse and just ran away.
I took a look around the park before I stood up and spotted an old man on the far side of the park. He kept bending forward and threw something into a plastic bag with him I watched for a while and realized what he was doing. He was picking up the litter. At first, I thought he might be a cleaner working in the park but I had never seen him before. “Who is he? It’s Sunday and he is not here for fun?” I talked to myself. I went on skating and forgot about him.
Time went fast and the sun was already high up in the sky. It was getting hot and I was tired. I was ready to go when I saw the old man again. The park was hall empty. He was still there, collecting the rubbish left on the benches with much elfort. Time and time again, he stopped to straighten his body but he showed no sign of leaving soon. Clearly, it was hard work for people of his a age.
“Not to leave? What if he has no water left in such hot weather?” I wondered.
With some hesitation, I walked toward him.
