二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Space is a dangerous place, not only because of meteors(流星), but also because of rays from the sun and other stars. The atmosphere again acts as our protective blanket on the earth. Light gets through, and this is necessary for plants to make the food which we eat. Heat, too, makes our environment suitable to live. Various kinds of rays come through the air from outer space, but enormous quantities of radiation from the sun are screened off. As soon as men leave the atmosphere they are exposed to this radiation but their spacesuits or the walls of their spacecraft, if they are inside, do prevent a lot of radiation damage.

Radiation is the greatest known danger to explorers in space. The unit of radiation is called “rem”. Scientists have reason to think that a man can put up with far more radiation than 0.1 rem without being damaged; the figure of 60 rems has been agreed on. The trouble is that it is extremely difficult to be sure about radiation damage a person may feel perfectly well, but the cells of his or her sex organs may be damaged, and this will not be discovered until the birth of deformed(畸形的) children or even grandchildren. Missions of the Apollo flights have had to cross belts of high radiation and, during the outward and return journeys, the Apollo crew accumulated a large amount of rems. So far, no dangerous amounts of radiation have been reported, but the Apollo missions have been quite short. We simply do not know yet how men are going to get on when they spend weeks and months outside the protection of the atmosphere, working in a space laboratory. Drugs might help to decrease the damage done by radiation, but no really effective ones have been found so far.

1According to the first paragraph, the atmosphere is necessary to man because of the following reason EXCEPT________

A.protecting him against the harmful rays from space B.providing sufficient light for plant growth

C.suppling the heat necessary for human survival D.screening off the falling meteors

2We learn from the passage that ________

A.exposure to even tiny amounts of radiation is fatal

B.the effect of exposure to radiation is slow in coming

C.radiation is avoidable in space exploration

D.astronauts in spacesuits needn’t worry about radiation damage

3The harm radiation that has been done to the Apollo crew members ________

    A.is insignificant B.is enormous C.seems overestimated D.remains unknown

4It can be inferred from the passage that________

A.the Apollo mission was very successful

B.the protection from space radiation is no easy job

C.astronauts may possibly have deformed children or grandchildren

D.radiation is not a threat to well-protected space explorers

5Which of the following is TRUE?

A.Space is dangerous only because of meteors.

B.Explorers in space have to avoid the damage from radiation

C.We have got effective ways to treat illnesses caused by radiation.

D.The atmosphere doesn’t screen off radiation

  • 27、   New research shows that daily light walking is important for maintaining health as you age. But if you can’t hit 10,000 steps, don't worry. There's nothing magical about the number 10,000.

In fact, the idea of walking at least 10,000 steps a day for health goes back decades to a marketing campaign started in Japan to promote a pedometer(计步器).And then, it was adopted in the US as a goal to promote good health.

"The original basis of the number was not scientific." says researcher I-Min Lee of Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She was curious to know how many steps you need to take a day to maintain good health and live a long life, so she and her colleagues designed a study. It turns out that women who took about 4,000 steps per day got an increase in longevity(寿命), compared with women who took fewer steps. “It was sort of surprising,” Lee says. Another surprise: the benefits of walking maxed out at about 7,500 steps. In other words, women who walked more than 7,500 steps per day saw no additional increase in longevity.

“ I love this study. I think it’s really good news for women who may not be very active. All they have to do is walk,” says Kathleen Janz, who studies how physical activity influences health at the University of Iowa. And Janz says that’s encouraging. Another thing Janz notes is that this study only measured walking. It didn’t measure things that don’t require steps, like gardening, swimming or biking.

So, if 10,000 steps has been feeling out of reach to you, it may be time to reset those factory settings on your fitness tracker. Instead, try to hit at least 4,400 a day, along with daily activities that you enjoy. And stick to it.

【1】What’s the original purpose of the idea of walking at least 10,000 steps a day?

    A.To make people live longer.

    B.To help sell a product.

    C.To change people’s habits.

    D.To test a pedometer

【2】How does Lee think of the result of the study?

    A.Confusing

    B.Unexpected

    C.Encouraging

    D.Doubtful

【3】Which may Kathleen Janz agree with?

    A.People need 10,000 steps a day

B.Pedometer producers should change their settings.

C.The study should not only focus on daily walking.

D.Some activities that don’t demand steps also benefit health.

  • 28、As far as Indonesian university student Tyas Sisianindita is concerned, spending about eight hours a day on her phone watching videos, chatting with friends or using social media is her routine. “I realize that my affection became an addiction,” she said, noting she checks her phone countless times from morning until night. She acknowledged straightforward that at night she could use her phone for up to five hours. In fact, Internet addiction is a growing social problem around the world.

Tyas goes to the University of Indonesia, where a team of students recently developed a device (装置) meant to fight phone addiction. The students spent three months creating the device, which can offer assistance to Internet users like Tyas to make them reduce the time they spend looking at their phones.

Inventor Irfan Budi Satria led the development team. The device is called “Nettox”, which combines the words “Internet” and “detox (排毒)”. Equipped with a sensor (传感器) that measures hemoglobin (血红蛋白) oxygen levels and changes of the heart rate called HRV, the device is worn on the user’s arm.

Studies have found that using a mobile phone for numerous hours can lower HRV levels. The Nettox device makes a sound when HRV and blood oxygen levels fall, which reminds wearers to stop using their phones. According to the American Psychological Association, for people between the ages of 18 and 25 like Tyas, HRV should stay above 60. In a recent test, Tyas’s HRV reading was 44.

But HRV readings can be influenced by if the user is a man or woman and what their body shape and health conditions are. So Irfan Budi Satria’s team is working to improve Nettox’s accuracy. The team aims to attain a patent (专利) for their invention when they crack this hard nut. Irfan says Nettox is for people subjectively trying to change their circumstances (状况). “Our goal is to help people who make up their minds to reform themselves and free themselves from Internet addiction,” he said. “The key is that awareness is of vital importance, without which even the best device won’t work.”

【1】What can we know from Paragraph 1?

    A.Tyas’grades have been dropping.

B.Tyas’ family found her phone addiction.

C.Tyas spends a lot of time and energy on her phone.

D.Tyas values her phone more than anything else.

A.Get rid of harmful things in our body.

B.Test if we use mobile phones too much.

C.Ensure our hearts are working normally.

D.Help collect data for future research.

【3】What can we know from the text?

A.Nettox’s performance remains to be improved.

B.Nettox helps most people cure their phone addiction.

C.Nettox is popular after it is put on the market.

D.Netox’s research team has applied for its patent.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.College Students Suffered from Heavy Phone Addiction

B.Indonesian College Students Will Cure Your Phone Addiction

C.College Students Shoulder Their Responsibility for Human Health

Rapidly advancing technology and its impact on education has been a subject of debate. How can schools equip students with the skills they need to succeed in a challenging job market?

Since technology is driving these changes, there is a theory that governments should keep focusing on STEM subjects. These are often referred to as “hard skills,” which are 1 in primary school and right through to university level. In the meantime, ‘soft skills’ are being 2.

This is a mistake. Much evidence suggests that soft skills are far more 3 to graduates in the long term. Research from Harvard University on the global job market has shown that STEM- related careers grew strongly between 1989 and 2000 but have slowed down since. In contrast, jobs in the creative industries----the sector probably most 4 with the need for soft skills---are growing rapidly. Soft skills are, in fact, increasingly in demand in the workplace: Google cites creativity, leadership 5 and communication skills as top requirements for both potential and current employees.

So why are soft skills so highly 6 for?

With the rapid evolution of technology, a focus on hard skills leaves students 7 to change, as these often have a short shelf life. According to research by World Economic Forum, more than one in four adults reports a mismatch between their skills and those needed for their job role. If soft skills are taught well, these skills should enable students to adapt to change more easily and progress further in their 8 career.

Of course, technical skills are important. But without the curriculum placing equal--- if not greater --- 9 on soft skills, our education systems are missing a huge trick. Hard skills may help a student get a job in a particular industry, but soft skills will help them disrupt it, achieving a wider 10 in their chosen field.

Driving an electric car 1 to the protection of environment, or so the marketing departments of their makers would have you believe. Yet a report which analyzes car emissions presents a rather different picture. A battery-powered car recharged with 2 generated by coal-fired power stations, it found, is likely to be more harmful. It could cause more than three times as many deaths from pollution as a 3 petrol-driven vehicle.

The study was carried out by the University of Minnesota. The researchers estimated how levels of fine particulate matter (细颗粒物) and ground-level ozone two important 4 of air pollution — would change when a car is powered by different ways.

It was no surprise that electric cars whose batteries were recharged with power from wind, solar or hydro-electric sources came out to be virtually free from harmful 5. They were estimated to cause 231 deaths over the course of a year, compared with 878 for petrol cars. Electric cars recharged with power from natural gas-fired stations were also a lot less harmful than petrol-driven ones, with 439 deaths. But if those same electric cars were recharged 6 by coal, they would be responsible for over 3,000 deaths.

Biofuels also caused more health problems than petrol. But diesel, which often  7 concern about pollution, is slightly cleaner than petrol. This is because the study assumes for all cars that emission-control technologies will be more widely used, especially particulate filters which have a remarkable effect on cleaning diesel 8. Diesel cars are also more 9 of fuel than petrol-driven ones.

Overall, the study shows that electric cars are cleaner than those traditional vehicles only if the power used to charge then is also clean. That is hardly a surprise, but the 10 of the difference is. How green electric cars really are, then, will depend mainly on where they are driven. In France, which obtains more than half of its power from nuclear station, electric cars look like a good bet. In China and some other developing countries, where a large amount of electricity is produced from coal, they may not be so environment- friendly as they are marketed.
