  • 26、Most of us like visiting the hills during the holiday season. The pure air, the greenery, and the simple living of the people in these regions is what attracts us. While the increase in the number of tourists visiting the hills has done wonders for the local economy, the pollution levels, especially the plastic waste, is also increasing rapidly.

In an attempt to maintain the beauty and the greens in the Himalayan region, Pradeep Sangwan started an organisation, which he named ‘Healing Himalayas’.

While in college, Pradeep took an interest in long hiking, and that was the beginning for him. He says, “Movies of Bollywood plays a huge role in making the hills popular. Movies of friends going on holidays to hike and finding themselves on these adventures have inspired many to come here. But when we arrived at Himalayas, things were different”.

Along with a group of volunteers, Pradeep set out with jute bags (麻袋) to return with piles of waste. He says, “A few months ago, we found that we had collected around 4,00,000 kilos of waste. This number would have gone up now.” The waste that is collected is sent to two recycling plants in the state, where electricity is produced.

Healing Himalayas conducts special activities, mass clean-ups and events in the community and schools to create awareness about the maintenance and restoration of the environment.

His quest is to ensure that people enjoy the place as it is, without spoiling it. In an interview, he offers a few tips to travellers, such as carrying your own bottle of water and completely avoiding using straws.

    Ellen Ochoa (May 10, 1958–)

Ellen Ochoa is an American engineer and retired astronaut. Born in Los Angeles, California, Ochoa was the first Latina woman to fly in space as part of the crew of the shuttle Discovery in 1993. In 1990, Ochoa was selected to astronaut candidacy as part of Group 13, a group of twenty-three NASA astronauts, and became an astronaut a year later. Her first spaceflight was aboard Discovery as a mission specialist and lasted nine days, in which the five-person crew conducted scientific experiments and deployed a research satellite to study the solar corona.

    Mamie Phipps Clark (April 18, 1917–August 11, 1983)

Mamie Phipps Clark was an American social psychologist, who specialized in child development in Black children. Born in Arkansas, Clark drew on her early experiences as a black child in the segregated (种族隔离) American South to help children growing up with the same inequalities. She initiated the famous Doll Test, which showed that Black children in segregated schools were more likely to prefer dolls with white complexions and yellow hair while discarding the brown dolls with black hair and assigning negative traits to them. Her husband, Kenneth, used their research to argue for school integration in the 1954 Supreme Court Case Brown v. Board of Education. This was the first time that social science was used in a Supreme Court case.

  • 28、Aviculturists, people who raise birds for commercial sale, have not yet learned how to create similar conditions to the natural incubation (孵化) of parrot eggs in the wild. They continue to look for better ways to increase egg production and to improve chick survival rates.

When parrots incubate their eggs in the wild, the temperature and humidity (湿度) of the nest are controlled naturally. Heat is transferred from the bird’s skin to the top of the eggshell, leaving the sides and bottom of the egg at a cooler temperature. This temperature difference may be vital to successful hatching. Nest construction can contribute to this temperature difference. Nests of loosely arranged sticks, rocks, or dirt are cooler in temperature at the bottom where the egg contacts the nesting material. Such nests also act as humidity regulators by allowing rain to drain into the bottom sections of the nest so that the eggs are not in direct contact with the water. As the water that collects in the bottom of the nest changes into gas, the water vapor rises and is heated by the incubating bird, which adds significant humidity to the incubation environment.

In artificial incubation programs, aviculturists remove eggs from the nests of parrots and incubate them under laboratory conditions. Most commercial incubators heat the eggs fairly evenly from top to bottom, thus ignoring the bird’s method of natural incubation, and perhaps reducing the survivability of the hatching chicks.

When incubators are not used, aviculturists sometimes suspend wooden boxes outdoors to use as nests in which to place eggs. In areas where weather can become cold after eggs are laid, it is very important to maintain a deep foundation of nesting material to protect eggs against the cold bottom of the box. If eggs rest against the wooden bottom in extremely cold weather conditions, they can become chilled to a point where the embryo (胚胎) can no longer survive Similarly, these boxes should be protected from direct sunlight to avoid high temperatures that are also fatal to the growing embryo.

Nesting material should be added in sufficient amounts to avoid both extreme temperature situations mentioned above and assure that the eggs have a soft, secure place to rest.

【1】According to paragraph 2, when the temperature of the sides and bottom of the egg are cooler than the top, then ________.

A.there may be a good chance for successful incubation

B.the incubating parent moves the egg to a new position

C.the embryo will not develop normally

D.the incubation process is slowed down

【2】The construction of the nest allows water to ________.

A.provide a beneficial source of humidity in the nest

B.loosen the materials at the bottom of the nest

C.keep the nest in a clean condition

D.touch the bottom of the eggs

【3】Which of the following is a problem with commercial incubators?

    A.They are expensive to operate.

B.They are unable to heat the eggs evenly.

C.They lack the natural temperature changes.

D.They fail to transfer heat to eggs like parent birds do.

【4】What is the main idea of the passage?

A.Nesting material varies according to the parrots’ environment.

B.Humidity is an important factor in incubating parrots’ eggs.

C.Aviculturists have constructed the ideal nest box for parrots.

D.Wild parrots’ nests provide information useful for artificial incubation.

  • 29、Processed foods like chips, sodas and frozen pizzas are full of salt, sugar, and fat. Now, scientists are trying to understand if there is something else about such foods that may be bad for humans.

Scientists have already linked low-cost, packaged foods to rising obesity rates around the world. Obesity increases the risk of many health problems. Three recent studies offer more clues on how our increasingly industrialized food supply may be affecting our health.

The researchers created a system that places foods into four groups. The system says highly processed foods are made mostly of industrialized materials and additives(添加剂). Sodas, packaged cookies, instant noodles and chicken nuggets(鸡肉块) are some examples of highly processed foods. But also included are products that can seem healthy, such as morning cereals, energy bars and some kinds of yogurt.

Researchers conducted a four-week study involving 20 people. They found that people ate about 500 more calories a day when fed mostly processed foods. That is compared to when the same people were given less processed foods. The researchers permitted the 20 participants to eat as much or as little as they wanted. They were taken to a medical center so their health and behavior could be observed. In another study, researchers in France found people who ate more processed foods were more likely to have heart disease. A similar study in Spain linked eating more processed foods to a higher risk of death in general.

When fed less processed foods, people in the study produced more of a hormone that controls hunger, and less of a hormone that causes hunger. The reason for the reaction is not clear. The scientists also found that people ate processed foods more quickly. Kevin Hall is one of the researchers who led the study. He said that processed foods were usually softer and easier to chew and swallow”. Hall noted the source of nutrients might make a difference. For example, fiber from fruit and vegetables may be better for making people feel full than fiber added to packaged foods such as energy bars and yogurt.

Avoiding processed foods can be hard, especially for people with limited time and money. Processed foods can also take many forms. In addition, companies continually re-engineer products to make them seem healthier. The newest studies may provide more reasons to avoid processed foods. But, they also call attention to the difficulty of coming up with ways to do that.

【1】What kind of food do energy bars belong to?

    A.Fairly health-friendly foods.

    B.Especially beneficial foods.

    C.Relatively high-cost foods.

    D.Highly processed foods.

【2】What can we know about eating more processed foods in Paragraph 4?

A.It does harm to people potentially.

B.It can often result in death.

C.It makes people get less calories.

D.It makes little difference to people’s health.

【3】What is more likely to make people feel full?

    A.Fiber added to packaged foods.

    B.Fiber from fruit and vegetables

C.Highly processed foods like instant noodles.

D.Foods made mostly of industrial materials and additives.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

    A.Different Kinds of Processed Foods

    B.Recent Studies on Processed Foods

    C.How Bad Processed Foods Are!

D.Advantages and Disadvantages of Processed Foods
