21、A worrying rise in social media posts, suggesting that people leave their Halloween pumpkins in the woods to feed wildlife after October 31, has made wildlife experts concerned. Thousands of pumpkins are discarded in woods across Britain. While well-meaning pumpkin carvers might think they are doing the local animals groups a kindness, leaving your leftover jack-o’-lantern in the woodland is actually doing more harm than good.
“A myth seems to have built up that leaving pumpkins in woods helps wildlife, but behind it are many hidden issues.” said Paul Bunton, engagement and communication officer at The Woodland Trust, according to The Telegraph.
One of the main issues is that the leftover of the Halloween pumpkins are often eaten by already struggling hedgehogs(刺猬). In early November, hedgehogs are looking to gain as much weight as possible to survive their winter hibernation. However, eating pumpkin is harmful to their little hedgehog stomachs, leading to diarrhea and dehydration. This means they may struggle to put on weight, and in some cases can even be fatal.
Moreover, leftover Halloween pumpkins can contain candles and plastic decorations which can also be fatal to wildlife if mistakenly eaten. The rotting leftover can also attract less popular wildlife, such as rats, to an area. According to The Woodland Trust, the additional nutrients in the pumpkins can negatively affect the soil balance as well. “Pumpkin flesh can have a really harmful effect on woodland soils, plants, and fungi(真菌),” Bunton pointed out.
So what should you do with your beautifully carved pumpkin creation after October 31? Most experts recommend composting (堆肥) it yourself at home if you can, or asking if a local farm will accept it as a donation. You could even try some scientific experiments to produce more energy from the throw-away wasted. Either way, the hedgehogs will thank vou.

22、 My kids sit in Gee’s living room and respectfully lift antique Christmas ornaments (装饰品) out of a cardboard box. They giggle at Ann, who is a foreign character to them. Gee stands beside them, quietly explaining each treasure. She tells me that she and Tom built their ornament collection piece by piece. She smiles as we leave with the box.
We first met Tom and Gee in the early days of our marriage. Someone had been returning our garbage cans to the garage each garbage day, and Jim and I had wondered who. Then one day we spotted him: an elderly man who lived across the street.
I baked cookies and left them outside with a thank-you note. When we got home that day, a typed letter had replaced the gift. The letter was from Tom and explained back when he’d been fighting a war, neighbors had taken the time to handle the garbage cans for his young wife, Gee, and he never forgot. Now he paid it forward by doing the same for all of us.
A few years after we’d moved in, Tom died. We photocopied that letter and attached it to one of our own for Gee. We told her how special Tom had been to us. She wrote back and told us she still talked to Tom every day.
These days, we’re piling up boxes of our own. We’re planning a move. We know it’s time to go, and yet we can’t seem to stick the For Sale sign up on the lawn. It’s not just Gee. It’s the man who lets our kids pick peaches off the tree in his front yard. It’s the ladies who leave overflowing baskets for our kids on Easter.
Jim and I agree to wait until January. This Christmas, we’ll decorate our tree with Gee’s ornaments, out of the box labeled in Tom’s handwriting. Maybe I’ll talk to him just as Gee still does. Thank you, I’ll say. For teaching us what it means to be a neighbor.
【1】What can we infer from the first paragraph?

B. The kids were fond of these antique Christmas ornaments.

D. The kids had no interest in these antique Christmas ornaments.

A. He fought a war from which the author suffered a lot.
B. He first met the author at her wedding.
C. He was an elderly man whose job was handling garbage cans.
D. He helped to handle his neighbors’ garbage cans secretly.
【3】What could be the best title of this passage?
A. This is what Tom did for us.
B. This is why we didn’t want to move.
C. This is what it really means to be a neighbor.
D. This is how neighbors help each other.
23、Thanks to YouTube, Streaming first caught on in 2005. Today nearly three quarters of American households subscribe to at least one video streaming service. With almost 200 million subscribers worldwide and a billion hours of content viewed each week, Netflix is by far the biggest paid service. No. 2 is Amazon Prime Video. But for every Goliath, there are a hundred Davids. Many smaller streaming services show nothing but sports, classic movies, or Japanese anime.
In the early days of streaming the appeal was the lower cost, and it still is. The average streamer spends $37 a month and subscribes to three streaming platforms, while the average cable ser pays more than $200 per month. Still streaming has become more expensive in recent years. In 2019, Netflix raised the price of its basic service 12. 5 percent to $8.99 a month. A quarter of its subscribers, who protested price increases, said they would cancel their subscriptions. Few did.
A major reason: streaming networks have become home to many of the most popular TV series, including recent Emmy winners. They offer full-length feature films as well, and last year, Netflix received more Oscar nominations than any other media company. In fact, streaming has changed the Oscar competition, at least for this year. Usually only films shown in theaters are considered, but because of the coronavirus, all movies released online in 2020 are qualified for the 2021 Oscar Academy Awards. That shift is especially good news for Disney, which is putting the much anticipated movie Mulan on a new streaming service, Amazon Prime Video. But watching Mulan from your own home will cost $29.99 — on top of the service’s monthly fee of $6.99.
Too much streaming can have its disadvantages, however. There are those who binge-watch, a term Merriam-Webster added in 2017 with the definition “to watch many or all episodes of a TV series on end.” Alejandro Fragoso from New York holds the Guinness World Record: 94 straight hours.
【1】What do the underlined words “Goliath” and “David” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A.TV viewers.
B.TV programs.

A.They cannot go without it.
B.They think it is good value for money.
C.Netflix has controlled the market.
D.They think the low cost is a thing of the past.
【3】What does the good news in Paragraph 3 mean to Disney?
A.The movie Mulan will win an Oscar award.
B.The movie Mulan will generate great profits.
C.The movie Mulan can be released on Amazon Prime Video.
D.The movie Mulan can compete for an Oscar.
【4】What do binge-watchers tend to do?
