A cold gives you runny  nose and cough. But its usually easy to deal with. Some take medicine while others drink herbal tea or chicken soup. Usually you feel better after a week.

On the other hand, the flu can be much more dangerous. It usually gives you fever. Sometimes it can cause death. According to an American magazine, the worst flu killed about 50 million people from 1918 to1919.

Dont worry. If you get a flu vaccine(疫苗), it can stop you from getting the virus(病毒). Flu vaccines work by giving the body a small amount of flu viruses. This causes your body to develop antibodies(抗体) .So next time you get the flu , the antibodies should help you.

The flu virus changes every few years. Therefore, there are so many types of flu, such as H1N1 and H5N1. The antibodies for one type of flu cant help us against all types of flu. Thats why we need to get the vaccine every year.

    少购买新东西

Could you live for one month without buying anything new? Buy Nothing New Month started in Australia in 2010. It challenges people once a year to buy nothing new—except food, products used for hygiene, and medicine—for 30 days.

The aim is to encourage people to be less wasteful. It also makes us think about the influence our shopping habits have on the environment. But the challenge is not simply about going out without buying anything. People can find other creative ways to get the things they want. Here are a few examples of how to buy nothing new.

    Shopping secondhand

Many people shop for secondhand products at places like thrift stores. You can usually find lots of things at good prices, and your money often goes to a good cause. And while you're there, why not give away something you no longer use so that someone else can buy it?

    Swapping

With the Internet, swapping is easier than ever before. There are many websites, such as swap.com, where you can post a photo of something you don't need. Then, other users can offer something as a swap.

    Upcycling

Upcycling involves turning something you no longer need into something much more useful. For example, you can turn an empty drink bottle into a beautiful vase, or an old door into an interesting table.

So why not try the challenge for yourself? You can be a friend to the environment and also to your wallet.

  • 26、

Advertisements are everywhere, TV, newspapers, magazines and of course, on the Internet. Is advertisement really necessary? Billions of dollars are spent on it every year, so it must be important. After all, it’s a busy world. You have to advertise to get people’s attention to sell products!

Not every company thinks that way, however. The NO-AD company doesn’t advertise in traditional ways. It sells its products by word of mouth. In this way, they can save money and keep costs down, which makes their products cheaper for customers.

“Word-of-mouth advertising” happens when one person tells another about a good experience with a product or service. That next person then tells another friend, family member, or colleague (同事). And so a chain of information is created.

Usually, advertisers talk about how good their product is. Although they say things like “Studies show that our product is the best,” or “Everyone loves this product,” it can sound unconvincing. It’s much more believable to hear about a product from a family member or friend who has used it and liked it. Our loved ones’ opinions are very important to us, so we often listen to their advice about a product.

Word-of-mouth advertising has other advantages, too. It’s cost-effective (after all, it’s free) and a company doesn’t have to create a complex business plan to do it. Here is some advice for small businesses about word-of-mouth advertising.

    ● Be prepared to talk about your company at any time. You never know who you will meet. Always carry business cards.

    ● Only say good things about your company. Don’t say bad things about your competition.

    ● Help other companies by recommending people to them. The more you help others, the more good luck will come back to you and that’s good business.

1What’s the “traditional way” of advertising?

    A.Attracting people with lower price.

B.Selling products by word of mouth.

C.Telling people the names of the companies.

D.Spending billions of dollars on advertisements.

2Which of the following may be a word-of-mouth advertising?

A.Telling people how good the product is on TV.

B.Recommending the product you like to your friends.

C.Telling people the product is the best in the newspaper.

D.Showing people how popular the product is on the Internet.

3What does the underlined word “unconvincing” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A.uncomfortable B.unimportant C.unbelievable D.unusual

4What might NO-AD companies do according to the passage?

    A.Create complex business plans.

B.Say bad things about other companies.

C.Improve their products and service all the time.

D.Help other companies by wishing them good luck.

5The writer writes the passage to ________.

A.find out the value of making advertisements.

B.introduce people a new way of advertising.

C.tell people to care more about advertisements.

D.show how to sell products by advertising on TV.

  • 27、   A famous teacher was speaking to the students at our school. He began his lesson by holding up a ¥100 bill. Then he said to the three hundred students, “Who would like this ¥100 bill?” The students began to put up their hands at once.

Then he said, “I am going to give this ¥100 to one of you, but first, let me do this.” He then made the bill into a ball. Then he said, “Who wants it now?” The hands went back into the air.

“Well,” he said, “What if I do this?” and he dropped it on the floor and stepped on it. He picked up the dirty, crumpled bill and said, “Who still wants it?” Hands went back into the air.

“My friends,” he said, “you have learned a valuable lesson today. No matter (无论) what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not go down in value (价值). It was still worth ¥ l00!”

Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and stepped on by the chances we take and the things that happen to us. We feel as if we are worth nothing. But remember, no matter what has happened to you, you will never lose your value: you are always valuable to those people who love you.
