  • 26、   U.S. first lady Michelle Obama and her family have just ended their one-week trip in China. The whole world has paid attention to the two elegant and beautiful first ladies who have made a difference in the relationship between China and the U.S.A.

Mrs. Obama has visited the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, the Terracotta Warriors, and the pandas. She has tasted Peking Duck and experienced some other Chinese traditional culture. It is hoped that this trip to China can bring a real understanding of our eastern world to the first family of the United States.

Today, the number of exchange students between China and the U.S. has reached more than 4 million every year. There are more than 11,000 people traveling to and from each side of the Pacific. If the two countries can increase the exchange in travel, language, cuisine, and cultural understanding, this will help a lot in improving the understanding between the two countries.

Education was an important theme of Mrs. Obama’s visit, and it is crucial to the development of Sino-US relationship. China has an ancient tradition of placing a high value on education, and the first lady herself is an outstanding example of a person who changed her own destiny through education. • 27、The birth of Britain’s first cloned dog has been considered “a waste of money” and scientists said the process raised serious ethical (伦理的) concerns.

Sooam Biotech, a company in Seoul, said it had cloned the puppy, named Mini-Winnie, from a 12-year-old dog belonging to Rebecca Smith, who lives in the west London. She had won a contest run by the company which hoped to sell the service to pet owners for 60,000 pounds a time.

Mini-Winnie was born after scientists took skin cells from Mr Smith’s pet and dropped them into donor eggs to make embryos (胚胎). The puppy must remain in Korea for six months to satisfy British quarantine (检疫) laws.

But researchers warned that while a cloned dog might look similar to its biological parent, it would be a very different animal. “You would have many chances of replicating (复制) your favorite pet by choosing one from Battersea Dogs Home,” said Robin Lovell-Badge, a geneticist at the National Institute for Medical Research in London. Dusko Ilic, a stem cell scientist at King’s College London, said, “It is extremely unlikely that a puppy cloned from a favorite pet will behave in the same way. As time passes by, the differences will be more and more pronounced, especially personality traits. It is an absolute waste of money.”

The cloning process is controversial (有争论的) because the animals are often born with diseases or die soon after birth.

I think, it’s unnecessary to try to clone pets for pet owners. First, it’s really costly. Second, the cloned pet is actually another dog. Third, there are many homeless dogs for people to adopt in shelters. So why not just adopt a dog instead?

【1】What may be the reason for Sooam Biotech’s work on cloning pets?

    A.To pay back to society.

B.To make money out of it.

    C.To comfort sad pet owners.

    D.To win an important contest.

【2】Why doesn’t the cloned dog enter Britain now?

A.Because people in Britain are against it.

B.Because the company is afraid that it will die.

C.Because it needs to stay in Korea for research.

D.Because British quarantine laws don’t allow it.

【3】What can we learn from what Dusko Ilic said in paragraph4?

A.Cloned pets are usually not lovely.

B.Cloned pet can be very disappointing.

C.It’s possible to replicate one’s favorite pet.

D.A pet dog looks similar to its biological parent.

【4】According to Paragraph 5, why is the cloning process controversial?

    A.It is costly.

    B.It is too difficult.

    C.It can spread diseases.

    D.The result is unsatisfactory.

  • 29、   It is important to protect yourself from harmful rays. But if you think a high-factor sunscreen keeps you safe from harmful rays, you may be wrong. Research in this week’s Nature shows that while factor 50 reduces the number of melanomas(黑素瘤)and delays their occurrence, it can’t prevent them. Melanomas are the most aggressive skin cancers. You have a higher risk if you have red or blond hair, fair skin, blue or green eyes, or sunburn easily, or if a close relative has had one. Melanomas are more common if you have periodic intense exposure to the sun. Other skin cancers are increasingly likely with long-term exposure.

There is continuing debate as to how effective sunscreen is in reducing melanomas—the evidence is weaker than it is for preventing other types of skin cancer. A 2011 Australian study of 1,621 people found that people randomly selected to apply sunscreen daily had half the rate of melanomas of people who used cream as needed. A second study, comparing 1,167 people with melanomas to 1,101 who didn’t have the cancer, found that using sunscreen routinely, alongside other protection such as hats, long sleeves or staying in the shade, did give some protection. This study said other forms of sun protection—no sunscreen—seemed most beneficial. The study relied on people remembering what they had done over each decade of their lives, so it’s not entirely reliable. But it seems reasonable to think sunscreen gives people a false sense of security in the sun.

Many people also don’t use sunscreen properly applying insufficient amounts, failing to reapply after a couple of hours and staying in the sun too long. It is sunburn that is most worrying—recent research shows five episodes of sunburn in the teenage years increase the risk of all skin cancers.

The good news is that a combination of sunscreen and covering up can reduce melanoma rates, as shown by Australian figures from their slip-slop-slap campaign. So if there is a heat wave this summer, it would be best for us, too, to slip on a shirt, use sunscreen and slap on a hat.

    1What’s people’s common expectation of high-factor sunscreen?

A.It will protect them from sunburn.

B.It will keep their skin smooth and fair.

C.It will work for people of any skin color.

D.It will delay the occurrence of skin cancer.

2What can we learn from Paragraph 2?

A.Sunscreen can prevent all kinds of skin cancers.

B.The studies are based on direct observation of the subjects.

C.The studies may help people select the most effective sunscreen.

D.Daily application of sunscreen helps reduce the incidence of melanomas.

3What does the author suggest in order to reduce melanoma rates?

A.Staying in the shade whenever possible.

B.Using covering up instead of sunscreen.

C.Using both covering up and sunscreen.

D.Applying the right amount of sunscreen.

4What is the best title for the text?

A.No Way to Stop Harmful Rays!

    B.Does Sunscreen Prevent Skin Cancer?

C.Did You Use Sunscreen in the Right Way?

D.Skin Cancer—The Biggest Threat to Human Beings!

  • 32、About five years ago, when the first generation of wearable fitness trackers became popular, they were announced as the _______of a revolution. Health experts and business people alike said that giving people _______ to real-time calorie-burning and step-count data would inspire them to lose weight, eat better and most importantly _______more. But even as the U.S. market for _______ devices hits $7 billion this year, there’s evidence that their promise isn’t quite paying off.

The U.S. has an exercise problem, _______ 28% of Americans aged 50 and over considered wholly _______. That means 31 million adults move no more than is necessary to perform the most basic functions of daily life. Wearables, experts_______, were going to change that. But limited academic research has been done to figure out whether wearables _______people’s behavior in the long term. The research that does exist isn’t _______. For a recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers wanted to see whether activity trackers would help overweight people lose more weight over two years than if they just did a weight-loss intervention alone. They didn’t. “We found that just giving people a device doesn’t mean it’s going to ________ something that you think it’s going to lead to,” says John Jakicic, the author of the study, from the University of Pittsburgh. “These activity trackers don’t engage people in strategies that make a ________ in terms of long-term change”

Another new study ________ a different challenge: user ________. By the end of a yearlong study of 800 people, just 10% of participants were still wearing the trackers, according to, Eric Finkelstein, a professor at the Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore. “We didn’t find that Fitbits really have much of an effect,” he says. This may well be because people expect trackers to do something they’re not designed to do—________, force them to change their behaviors. “There’s __________among people about their function, a measurement tool and an intervention,” Finkelstein says. A scale counts pounds, for example, ________it won’t teach you how to eat less. “When people put these devices on, they might interact with the app for the first few weeks, maybe the first few months, but there comes a point where that starts to fall off,” says Finkelstein.

To be ________, some of the costlier and higher-tech wearables have features baked into them ________ encourage users to move more, says Shelten Yuen, Fitbit’s vice president of research. Among them are: shaking sensors, movement reminders and social-media combination, all designed to ________ users to make better health choices every day. But more research will be needed to determine whether or not these features or others like them— could ________ improve people’s health and fitness levels.

  • 37、Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word. For the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.

    My daughter

(A story told by a father, a famous actor)

My wife and I only had the one child. We had Amy.

I see her as my best friend. I think she’d always come to me first if she had a problem. We have the same sense of humor, and share interests. 1 I don’t mind animals, she’s completely fascinated with them, and she has always had dogs, cats, horses, and goldfish in her life.

We were 2 (close) when she was about four, which I think is a lovely age for a child. They know the parents best, and don’t have outside contacts. She must have grown up suddenly when she went to school, because I remember her growing away from her family slightly. Any father who has a teenager daughter comes across an extraordinary collection of people, and there seemed to be an endless stream of strange young men 3 (come) through our house. By the time I learned their names they 4 (go) away and I had to start learning a new lot.

I wanted more than anything else for her to be happy in 5 she was doing, and I was prepared to pull strings to help her on her way. When she left a good school she decided she wanted to become an actress so I got her into drama school. It wasn’t to her liking so she joined a theatre group and began doing bits and pieces in films. She was doing well, but then gave it up. She probably found it boring. Then she took up social work, and finally went to work 6a designer and he became her husband. And that’s really the story of her life. She must be happy with him—they’re always together.

We have such similar tastes in books and music 7 I used to take her to see an opera, which is my big passion. However, I don’t think she likes it very much. She doesn’t come with me anymore.

I don’t think she’s a big television watcher. She knows when I’m on the television, and she 8 watch, but I don’t know. It’s not the kind of thing she tells me.

We’re very grateful for Amy. She’s a good daughter as daughters go. We’re looking forward to being grandparents.
