21、 England and Wales launched a COVID-19 smartphone app on Thursday, allowing users to trace contacts, check the local level of risk and record visits to venues such as pubs, four months after the technology was promised to the public. People aged over 16 will be encouraged to download the app by advertisements with the slogan: “Protect your loved ones. Get the app.”
The NHS COVID-19 app comes as Britain preparation for a second wave of infections, with daily case numbers rising at rates not seen since the peak of the pandemic (流行病) and a testing system unable to cope with demand in many areas.
The government had said a COVID-19 app would arrive in May, but early tests were disturbed by problems. As the delay lengthened, the government downplayed the importance of smartphones in fighting COVID-19, saying that rather than an app being central to the test and trace system, it was “the cherry on the cake”.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock, however, said that with infection rates rising, every tool available must be used to prevent spreading, including the latest technology. “We have worked extensively with tech companies, international partners, and privacy and medical experts— and learned from the trials — to develop an app that is secure, simple to use and will help keep our country safe,” he said.
The app uses Bluetooth signals to log when a user is in close contact with another user, generally meaning within two meters for 15 minutes or more. If someone then tests positive for COVID-19, they can choose to share the result anonymously with their close contacts, who will each receive a warning and will have to isolate (隔离) for 14 days. The app generates a random ID for each user to protect privacy, and matches cases on the device rather than on a central server, as was the case in the first iteration. It will also enable users to book a COVID- 19 test subject to availability, check symptoms, and register at venues using a QR-type bar code displayed by businesses.

22、WHY A DOSE OF FEAR IS GOOD FOR YOU
Eleanor Roosevelt once said: “Do one thing every day that scares you.” She was onto something. Science has shown that feeling fear — in the right doses (量) — has several benefits.
·Feeling fear is fun and exciting. Many people scare themselves on purpose. 【1】
When you step outside your comfort zone, it is fear that makes you feel alive, which is fun and exciting. The excitement generated can also help reduce depression by increasing adrenaline (肾上腺素), which in turn increases excitement and glucose (changed into energy). 【2】 A dose of fear is an “eraser” for the mind.
·【3】 Being afraid of something can remind you of an area of your life that is limiting you. For instance, if you’re afraid of flying but face the fear and gather up the courage to step on an airplane, you can travel the world. Adding to your experiences means that you’ll create a varied life. You’ll also have fewer regrets.
·Fear makes you aware of what’s really important in life. How often have you said to yourself: “When I have more time, I’ll spend it with my family, pursue my passion, eat healthier or exercise more”? Fear makes you realize that “now” is the only time you have to achieve and follow through what is most important.【4】
Some say where fear meets courage is the sweet spot in which mountains get scaled and rivers are run. 【5】 We should all embrace our fear. Not the big fears that are life-threatening but the helpful fears that come in small doses.
A.Fear helps you succeed.
B.“Later” is never ensured.
C.Fear allows you to live life to the fullest.
D.They watch scary movies, ride roller coasters or go skydiving.
E.And every time you come through a challenge, you feel empowered.
F.Most of all, fear can be the birth place of change, creativity and innovation.
G.Actually, it’s nearly impossible to be thinking of your worries when you are experiencing fear.
23、 Sports accounts for a growing amount of income made on the sales of commercial time by television companies. Many television companies have used sports to attract views from particular sections of the general public, and then they have sold audiences to advertisers.
An attraction of sports programs for the major U.S. media company is that events are often held on Saturday and Sunday afternoons — the slowest time periods of the week for general television viewing. Sport events are the most popular weekend programs, especially among male viewers who may not watch much television at other times during the week. This means the television networks are able to sell advertising time at relatively high prices during what normally would be dead time for programming. Media corporations also use sports to attract commercial sponsors that might take their advertising dollars elsewhere if television stations did not report certain sports. The people in the advertising departments of major corporations realize that sports attract male viewers. They also realize that most business travelers are men and that many men make family decisions on the purchases of computers, cars and life insurance.
Golf and tennis are special cases for television programming. These sports attract few viewers, and the ratings(收视率) are unusually low. However, the audience for these sports is attractive to certain advertisers. It is made up of people from the highest income groups in the United States, including many lawyers and business managers. This is why television reporting of golf and tennis is sponsored by companies selling high-priced cars, business and personal computers, and holiday trips. This is also why the networks continue to carry these programs regardless of low ratings. Advertisers are willing to pay high fees to reach high-income consumers and those managers who make decisions to buy thousands of “company cars” and computers. With such viewers, these programs don’t need high ratings to stay on the air.
【1】Why would weekend afternoons become dead time without sport programs?
A. Because there would be few viewers
B. Because the advertisers would be off work.
C. Because television programs would go slowly.
D. Because viewers would pay less for watching television.
【2】In many families, men make decisions on _________.
A. holiday trips B. sports viewing
C. television shopping D. expensive purchases
【3】Why are the ratings not important for golf and tennis programs?
A. their advertisers are carmakers
B. their viewers are attracted by sports
C. their advertisers target at rich people.
D. their viewers can afford expensive cars
【4】What is the passage mainly about?
A. Television ratings are determined by male viewers.
B. Rich viewers contribute most to television companies.
C. Sports are gaining importance in advertising on television.
D. Commercial advertisers are the major sponsors of sport events.
24、Alberto Conejo has not lived in China long, but his contributions are strongly felt not only in the area in which he works as an expert, but also in the construction of a more environmentally friendly world as a whole.
One of the biggest problems facing humanity has to do with carbon dioxide emissions. In this sense, Conejo has made important contributions through his research to reduce energy consumption in steel production by using foamy slag (熔渣) as an insulator (绝缘体) in electric arc furnaces(电弧炉). As the steel industry is the one that emits the largest amount of carbon dioxide emissions in the world—around 7 percent “The work I did focused on optimizing the use of electrical energy and minimize energy losses,” he said.
Conejo is not just any man. His dedication and work have earned him important recognition, but these achievements have not been without sacrifices.“During that time we traveled to many parts of China; we went to remote villages, climbed mountains, crossed rivers and lakes, and visited old towns and museums,” he recalled.
Although Mexico “had almost everything,”there was something missing. For this reason, when the School of Metallurgical and Ecological Engineering at the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) offered him a position as a researcher and professor under a six-year contract, the Mexican did not hesitate to take the flight.
These efforts led him to be awarded the Chinese Government Friendship Award on September 30 last year, the highest distinction for foreigners who have made outstanding contributions to the cause of the country’s modernization, reform and opening up. Although he is aware of his achievements, Conejo does not hesitate to say that this is also the result of shared teamwork. “The only thing I can say is that there are no individual achievements, but the results of a collective effort because in everything we do we use previously developed knowledge.”
【1】What is the purpose of Conejo’s research?
A.To minimize energy losses in electricity industry.
B.To maximize the profit of steel industry in Mexico.
C.To promote industrial collaboration between China and Mexico.
D.To cut down energy consumption in steel production.
【2】What do the underlined word “optimize” mean in paragraph 2.
A.Pay close attention to.
B.look out for.
C.Make the best of.
D.Give rise to.
【3】What can be inferred from Conejo’s words in the last paragraph?
A.Individual dedication has nothing to do with his achievements.
B.The team’s joint effort contributes to their accomplishments.
C.If only they use previously developed knowledge they must make achievements.
D.Individual achievements play a significant role in his career.
【4】What’s the best title of this article?

26、请阅读下面的文字,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章
Researchers in the Netherlands report that children who get more exercise, whether at school or at other places, tend to have higher scores on standardized tests. In a review of 14 studies that looked at physical activity and academic performance investigators found that the more children moved? the better their grades were in school, particularly in the basic subjects of math, English and reading.
The data will certainly fuel the ongoing debate over whether physical education classes for senior three students should be reduced or even cancelled. The arguments against physical education have included concerns that gym time may be taking away study time. With standardized test scores in the US dropping in recent years, some administrators believe students need to spend more time in the classroom instead of on the playground. But as these findings show, exercise and academics may not be consequently exclusive. Physical activity can improve blood flow to the brain, memory, attention and creativity, which are essential to learning.
