二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   The world's richest man might seem to have it all, but Bill Gates has one regret. The self-made billionaire said he felt stupid for not knowing any foreign languages.

Speaking in his third Ask Me Anything question-and-answer session for online forum Reddit(红迪网), the Microsoft founder said that he wished he spoke French, Arabic or Chinese.

He said, "I took Latin and Greek in high school and got As and I guess it helps my vocabulary. I keep hoping to get time to study one of these—probably French because it is the easiest. I did Duolingo for a while but didn't keep it up."

Gates, who is worth $79.3 billion, praised Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg for surprising an audience in Beijing when he spoke fluent Chinese. "Mark Zuckerberg amazingly learned Chinese and did a Q & A with Chinese students—unbelievable, isn't it?" he said.

This isn't the first time for Gates to admit his regret over language. He also showed his habits at home and personal insights.

Last February, Gates said he likes to do the dishes himself—to his own special standards every night and also told the interviewer that his wife, Melinda, would likely want Samuel L. Jackson to play her husband in a biopic(传记片).

He also admitted that he would pick up a $100 bill if he found it on the street.

As he took the top spot on Forbes(福布斯) 28th Annual Billionaires list last year for the fourth time, he said he is pretty basic when it comes to spending on clothes and food, but that he enjoys investing in shoes and rackets(球拍) when he plays tennis.

When asked a life lesson he had to learn the hard way, the billionaire said staying up too late is a habit he is still trying to break. "Don't stay up too late even if the book is really exciting. You will regret it in the morning. Pam is still working on this problem," he said.

1Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

    A. An Interview with Bill Gates B. How Bill Gates Succeeded

    C. Bill Gates' Regret D. The Richest Billionaire

2The underlined part in paragraph 8 may actually mean that _______.

    A. it is important to lay a good foundation of life

    B. food and clothing are basic needs for people's life

    C. he never cares about buying food and clothing

    D. he doesn't spend much money on food and clothes

3What advice did Bill Gates give?

    A. Do the dishes yourself at home.

    B. Be a good language learner.

    C. Avoid staying up too late.

    D. Pick up the $100 bills in the streets.

4Which of the following is true according to the passage?

    A. Bill Gates is also the founder of Facebook.

    B. Bill Gates was good at learning languages in high school.

    C. Bill Gates topped the list of Forbes 28 times.

    D. Bill Gates' wife wants Samuel to play a game with Gates.

  • 27、   Standing at the top of the world, I cleared the ice from my oxygen mask(氧气面罩), bent a shoulder forward against the wind, and stared absently down at the land of Tibet. Finally I had made it-the top of Mount Qomolangma.

I understood on some dim level(隐约地)that the earth down there was a grand sight. I’d been longing for this moment, and the excitement that would come with it. But now that I was finally here, actually standing on the top of Mount Qomolangma, I just couldn’t collect the energy to care.

It was early on the afternoon of May 10, 1996. I hadn’t slept for fifty-seven hours. My stomach was upset because the only food I’d been able to force down over the past three days was a bowl of soup. To make things worse, weeks of violent coughing had made ordinary breathing a bitter process. At 29,028 feet above the sea level, there was so little oxygen reaching my brain that I couldn’t think better than a slow child. Right now I could not feel much of anything except cold and tired. After taking four quick photos, I turned and headed down. I’d spent less than five minutes on the roof of the world.

Looking down the route we had climbed, I noticed something that until that moment had escaped my attention. To the south, where the sky had been perfectly clear just an hour earlier, a blanket of clouds now hid the lesser mountains surrounding. Nothing I saw early that day suggested that a violent storm was approaching. To my oxygen-exhausted mind, the clouds coming up the grand valley of ice appeared no different from the harmless clouds that rose from the valley almost every afternoon.

As I was climbing down, I began to get extremely anxious. However, my concern at that moment had little to do with the weather; I had almost run out of oxygen. I ought to have checked earlier. I needed to get down, fast.

1What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 mean?

A.The top of the world. B.The land of Tibet.

C.A grand sight. D.Reaching the top.

2Why did the writer leave the top so quickly?

A.He was exhausted and weak. B.He had dropped his camera.

C.An unexpected violent storm arrived. D.He had fear of heights.

3What can we infer from the passage?

A.The grand sight made the writer scream.

B.The weather on Qomolangma was changeable.

C.The writer was energetic and strong-minded.

D.The writer was experienced and well-prepared.

  • 28、   Good health is the most valuable possession a person can have, but one can not regard good health as certain to happen. It's important to remember that our body needs proper care in order to be healthy. There are three things that a person can do to stay in good shape: one should eat the right foods, get enough sleep, and exercise regularly.

Proper nutrition is important for good health, Your body can not function(起作用)well unless it receives the proper kind of “fuel”. Avoid foods with lots of sugar and fat. Eat plenty of foods high in protein, like meat, fish, beans and nuts. Vegetables and fruits are especially important because they provide necessary vitamins and minerals. However, don't overeat. It's not helpful to be overweight.

Getting the proper amount of sleep is also important. If you don't get enough sleep, You’ll feel tired and irritable(急躁的). You have no energy. Over a long period of time a little amount of sleep may even result in a change of personality. Be sure to allow yourself for seven to nine hours of sleep each night. If you do so, your body will feel strong and refreshed, and your mind will be sharp.

Finally, get plenty of exercise. Exercise firms the body, strengthens the muscles, and prevents you from gaining weight. It also improves your heart and lungs. If you follow a regular exercise program, you will probably increase your lifespan(寿命). Any kind of exercise is good. Most sports are excellent for keeping the body in good shape: basketball, swimming, bicycling, gymnastics and running are good examples. Sports are not only good for your body, but they are enjoyable and interesting, too.

If everybody were to eat the right foods, get plenty of sleep and exercise regularly, the world would be a happier and healthier place. We would all live to be much older and wiser.
