  • 22、I don’t ever want to talk about being a woman scientist again. There was a time in my life when people asked constantly for stories about what it’s like to work in a field controlled by men. I was never very good at telling those stories because truthfully I never found them interesting. What I do find interesting is the origin of the universe, the shape of space-time and the nature of black holes.

At 19, when I began studying astrophysics, it did not bother me in the least to be the only woman in the classroom. But while earning my Ph.D. at MIT and then as a post-doctor doing space research, the issue started to bother me. My every achievement — jobs, research papers, awards — was viewed from the angle of gender(性别). So were my failures.

Then one day a few years ago, out of my mouth came a sentence that would eventually become my reply to any and all provocations(挑衅): I don’t talk about that anymore. It took me 10 years to get back the confidence I had at 19 and to realize that I didn’t want to deal with gender issues. Why should curing sexism be yet another terrible burden on every female scientist?

Today I research and teach at Barnard, a women’s college in New York City. Recently, someone asked me how many of the 45 students in my class were women. You cannot imagine my satisfaction at being able to answer, 45. I know some of my students worry how they will manage their scientific research and a desire for children. And Idon’t dismiss those concerns. Instead, I have given them this: the visual of their physics professor heavily pregnant doing physics experiments. And in turn they have given me the image of 45 women driven by a love of science. And that’s a sight worth talking about.

【1】Why doesn’t the author want to talk about being a woman scientist again?

A.She finds space research more important.

B.She is not good at telling stories of the kind.

C.She is fed up with the issue of sexual discrimination.

D.She feels unhappy working in male-controlled fields.

【2】According to Paragraph 2, what bothered the author constantly?

A.People’s fixed attitude toward female scientists.

B.Lack of confidence in succeeding in space science.

C.Widespread misunderstanding about her space research.

D.Unfair treatment from both inside and outside her circle.

【3】What does the underlined sentence convey?

A.Women should do science experiments while having a baby.

B.Women can balance a career in science and having a family.

C.Women now have fewer problems pursuing a science career.

D.Women have more barriers on their way to academic success.

  • 23、Choose Native Plants for Your Garden

Jessica Damiano moved into a new home in the spring of 2005. A month later, she was delighted to see a flowering plant start to grow. 【1】

Two years later, Damiano graduated from Cornell University’s master gardener program. She worked as a gardening writer for a local newspaper. 【2】 She discovered that her favorite plant was called purple loosestrife and that it was considered “invasive(入侵的)” in her home state of New York. However, she told herself that the plant was not spreading on the land and that it was not out of control.

Then she learned more. Some plants known to be invasive are what Damiano calls “wolves in sheep’s clothing”. This means they may seem harmless and well-contained in the garden but become harmful in other places.

【3】 Those seeds grow into new plants that affect native plants. This is because invasive plants often are not eaten by local wildlife, which would otherwise keep them under control.

If not controlled, invasive plants grow larger and push out native plants that provide food and shelter for birds, insects, and small animals. This harms the local environment.

Many state environmental agencies don’t allow the sale and use of plants found to be harmful to human or ecological(生态的) health. But some invasive plants are not officially considered invasive. 【4】

So, what should a gardener do?

Damiano says gardeners should avoid any plants sold as “fast-spreading” “quick-climbing” or a “rapid self-sower”. She warns that these are all sellers’ key words for invasive plants.

Next, learn about your local area. Which plants are invasive? And which plants are native? Ask government agencies and environmental groups. 【5】 Then you can confirm invasive plants.

A.But that did not matter to her.

B.That is when she found out the truth.

C.It destroys food and habitat for fish and water birds.

D.You can also do your own study at libraries or online.

E.She did not know the name of the beautiful purple plant.

F.Others may be listed as invasive in one area but not another.

G.Birds eat the seeds of invasive plants and spread them to other places.

  • 24、Dumbphones have very limited functions compared to an iPhone. You can only make and receive calls and messages. And, if you are lucky-listen to radio and take very basic photos, but absolutely not connect to the internet or apps.

Dumbphones are enjoying a comeback. Google searches for them increased by 89% between 2018 and 2021. Meanwhile, a study said that one in 10 mobile phone users in the UK had a dumbphone. Kaiwei Tang, CEO of Light Phone, a maker of dumbphones said that, surprisingly, the company’s main customers are aged between 25 and 35. He says he expected buyers to be much older.

Sandra Wachter, a researcher at Oxford University, says that it’s easy to see why some of us are looking for simpler mobile phones. One can reasonably say that nowadays a smart phone’s ability to connect calls and send messages is almost a side function. Your smart phone is your entertainment centre, your newspaper, your map, your diary, and your wallet. They always want to catch your attention with notices and latest news.

“If aliens came to earth they’d think that mobile phones are the creatures controlling human beings,” Mr. Tang says. “It’s not going to stop. Instead, it’s getting worse. Consumers are realizing that something is wrong, and we want to offer a choice.”

Last year, Przemek Olejniczak, changed his smartphone for a dumphone at first for its longer-lasting battery. However, he soon realized there were other benefits. “Before I would always be checking, going through the news, or other facts I didn’t need to know,“ he says. ”Now I have more time for my family and myself. And I’m not addicted to liking, sharing, or describing my life to other people. I have more privacy.“

Yet back in London, Robin West says that many people are confused by her choice of mobile. “Everyone thinks it’s just a short-term thing. They’re always asking me: ‘So when are you getting a smartphone? Are you getting one this week?’ ”

【1】What surprises Kaiwei Tang about dumbphones?

A.Few people show interest in them.

B.They are coming into fashion again.

C.Their buyers are mainly young people.

D.Dumbphones are in a wider use than smartphones.

【2】What does Sandra Wachter think of people’s turning to dumbphones?

    A.Understandable.

    B.Unusual.

    C.Thoughtless.

    D.Meaningful.

【3】What does the author mention Robin West in the last paragraph?

A.To give suggestions on mobile choice.

B.To show public support for dumbphones.

C.To make a prediction about the future of dumbphones.

D.To introduce a different opinion on using dumbphones.

【4】Which of the following might be a suitable title for the text?

    A.Dumbphones are Here to Stay

    B.A Generation Controlled by Smartphones

C.Smartphones: Where are they leading us?

D.Another Choice? The Return of Dumbphones
