21、Have you ever wondered why hair turns gray as you get older and whether there is something you can do to prevent graying or at least slow it down? Here's a look at what causes hair to turn gray and some of the factors that affect graying.
The age at which you'll get your first gray hair (supposing your hair doesn't simply fall out) is largely decided by genetics. You'll probably get that first strand (缕)of gray hair around the same age your parents and grandparents started to go gray. However, the rate at which the graying progresses is somewhat under your own control. Smoking is known to increase the rate of graying. Generally poor nutrition, insufficient B vitamins, anemia, and untreated thyroid (甲状腺)conditions can also speed the rate of graying.
What causes your hair's color to change? That has to do with the process controlling the production of the paint called melanin (黑色素),the same material that tans your skin in response to sunlight. Every hair cell contains melanin cells called melanocytes. The melanocytes produce eumelanin(真黑素),which is black or dark brown, and pheomelanin, which is reddish-yellow, and pass the melanin to the cells which produce keratin (角蛋白), the chief protein in hair. When the keratin-producing cells die, they keep the coloring from the melanin. When you first start to go gray, the melanocytes are still present, but they become less active. Less paint is kept into the hair so it appears lighter.
As graying progresses, the melanocytes die off until there aren't any cells left to produce the color. While this is a normal and unavoidable part of the aging process and is not of itself associated with disease, some autoimmune diseases can cause premature graying. However, some people start going gray in their 20s and are perfectly healthy.
Extreme shock or stress can also cause your hair to go gray very quickly, though not overnight.

22、Loneliness is an emotion. We probably all experience it at some point, but loneliness is very complex and unique to each of us.
【1】 . Being alone is a choice. But feeling lonely isn’t something we impose (强加于) on ourselves. In other words, you want to be around people, but something is making you feel unwanted, empty, or isolated, so you’re not having the meaningful connection you seek.
When does it become a problem? 【2】 , it can turn into a mental and physical health problem. It can be a symptom or cause of depression. It can affect self-worth. 【3】 . That’s why chronic (长期的) loneliness is linked to increased risk of high blood pressure, obesity and even other serious disorder.
To manage loneliness, you should accept and acknowledge it. Loneliness is a valid feeing. Don’t brush it under the carpet, as that doesn’t help solve the problem. 【4】 Smell a flower or take a walk in nature, for example. Celebrate each small achievement. When you decide to change things and seek a connection with others, consider a like-minded group. A client of mine joined a sewing group and it was very successful.
The best approach to helping someone who is lonely is to sensitively ask how they are and what they’re doing, and listen to the answer in a non-judgmental way. If you want to invite them to do something with you, do it. If they say no, don’t be discouraged from asking again. 【5】

23、According to body language expert Robert Phipps, the way people sleep at night actually determines a lot about the type of personality they have. Phipps has identified four sleeping positions that affect personality.
Phipps found that worriers, those who stress the most, tend to sleep in the fetal(胎儿的) position. He found that this is the most common bedtime position, with nearly 58 percent of people sleeping on their side with knees up and head down. The more we curl up(蜷曲), the more comfort we are seeking, according to Phipps.
The second most common position is the log. Sleeping with a straight body, with arms at each side, as if they are standing guard at Buckingham Palace, indicates stubbornness, and these people (the 28 percent who sleep this way) often wake up stiffer than when they went to sleep.
"The longer you sleep like this, the more rigid your thinking is and you can become inflexible, which means you make things harder for yourself," according to Phipps.
Yearner(向往型) sleepers are next on the list. About 25 percent of people sleep in this style — on their side with arms stretched out in front, looking as if they are either chasing a dream or perhaps being chased themselves. Yearners are typically their own worst critics, always expecting the best results, explained Phipps. These people often wake up refreshed and eager to face the challenges of the day ahead.
Perhaps the most peculiar(奇怪的) of sleep styles is the freefaller position. This sleep style makes up 17 percent of the population. They sleep face down with arms stretched out. These people, according to Phipps, feel like they have little control over their life. Not only is this the strangest of sleep styles, but also the least comfortable, and people may wake up feeling tired and have no energy.
In conclusion, Phipps has only one more thing to add: "A good night’s sleep sets you up for the following day and our sleeping positions can determine how we feel when we wake."
【1】Which of the following pictures is the fetal position?
【2】The underlined word "rigid" is closest in meaning to " ".
A. stubborn B. flexible C. comfortable D. strange
【3】Which sleeping position indicates that the sleeper tends to seek perfection?

24、The last thing Caitlin Hipp would have expected as she prepared to turn 28 years old was to be living at home with her parents. But through working as a part-time skating instructor and restaurant server, she isn't able to earn enough to live anywhere other than home.
To some degree, multigenerational households have always been a part of American life. However, the number of young adults who have been moving back in with their parents — or never leaving home in the first place — has been growing steadily.
UBS Financial Services released a report that even suggests one reason for the growing number of young adults still living at home could be that their family doesn't want them to leave.
The report shows that 74 percent of millennials (千禧一代)get some kind of financial support from their parents after college. It finds that millennials have redefined the ties that connect parents and children. Millennials see their parents as peers, friends and instructors. Nearly three quarters talked with their parents more than once a week during college. In return, their parents happily provide financial support well into adulthood, helping fund everything for them.
Stuart Hoffman, chief economist for the PNC Financial Services Group in the US, said the number of young adults striking out on their own fell during the Great Recession. Although job growth for millennials since 2014 has improved, that doesn't necessarily mean that millennials are starting to fly the nest. He said, “They may like living at home and being able to save money.
“There's no doubt it has held back household formation and purchases of things people spend money on related to household formation and perhaps related to child-raising," Hoffman explained. "But they are probably traveling more and eating out more if they don't have a house expense or marriage. I don't know if it represents a change in moral values. But it's much more common for adult children to live in their parents5 homes because it's becoming part of the culture.
【1】What can we learn about Caitlin Hipp?

A.Millennials are on good terms with their parents.
B.Millennials are financially independent after college.
C.Parents are unwilling to give their young adults allowance.
D.Parents want their kids to stay with them forever.
【3】What does Hoffman think of young adults' living at home?
A.It boosts the consumption of household products.
B.It may continue despite job growth.
C.It is a sign of shift in moral values.
D.It is new in American culture.
【4】What is the author's purpose of writing this passage?
A.To introduce millennials' living habits.
B.To stress the importance of financial independence.
C.To explain why American young adults still live at home.
D.To inform people of a social trend in the US.

26、读写任务
How many times have you heard the expression that most people spend more time planning their vacation than they do planning their lives. I would expand that expression by adding that most people spend more time "thinking" about their vacation than they do thinking about what's important in their life.
While rest and relaxation are a must in living a balanced life, it's now what we were created to do. After all, the Master Creator took his R&R (Rest and Recreation) on the seventh day, only after six days of "definitely directed thought."
Wallace D. Wattles, wrote "There is no labor from which most people shrink as they do from that of sustained and continuous thought; it is the hardest work in the world." And yet it is the first and primary labor of achievement.
What is your life's purpose or your personal mission statement? Is it written down? Do you review it and think about it often? Is your life organized around your purpose and a set of goals that support that purpose?
Without purpose and goals --- definitely directed thought --- you are like the proverbial "shop without a rudder(舵)." There is power in your purpose and in your goals. It is the power that takes you over obstacles, the fuel that pushes you toward the life you expect.
