二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   The sudden rise of the new coronavirus (冠状病毒) has shocked China. Although China has been doing everything possible to stop the virus, it has spread outside of its borders and into other regions. There are now confirmed cases of COVID-19 in countries including the UK, Japan, Germany, Vietnam, Russia and the United States.

There is a growing fear that the effects of the outbreak will worsen if it is not contained. This has led to countries closing borders with China and putting travel bans in place, hoping to protect their own citizens. However, fear and misinformation have also caused the spread of something else — racism.

Restaurants and businesses in many tourist areas across the world have posted signs banning Chinese people. Social media users recently shared a picture of a sign outside a hotel in Rome, Italy. The sign said that “all people coming from China” were “not allowed” in the hotel. Similar signs with anti-Chinese sentiment (情绪) were also reportedly seen in South Korea, the UK,

Malaysia and Canada. These signs were loud and clear — “No Chinese”. Racist actions such as these do a lot more harm than good.

“My ethnicity (种族渊源) has made me feel like I was part of a threatening and diseased  mass ,” Sam Phan, a master’s student at the University of Manchester, wrote to the Guardian.

Edith Bracho-Sanchez, an assistant professor at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, has experience working on health issues that involve international borders. “As human beings, we are afraid of the things we don’t know, but our response should be to educate ourselves, not to further spread … fears and misunderstandings,” she said. Bracho-Sanchez suggested that the media should “stick to the facts”.

Phan shared a similar view: “It’s important … to see us in all our diversity, as individual human beings, and to challenge stereotypes (刻板印象). The coronavirus is a human tragedy, so let’s not allow fear to breed (引发) hatred, intolerance and racism.”

Instead of spreading misinformation and fueling fearful thoughts, we should do everything we can to support those who are affected by events such as the COVID-19 outbreak. After all, the real enemy is the virus, not the people who are fighting it.

1What do Paragraphs 2-3 mainly talk about?

A.How COVID-19 has spread outside of China.

B.How other countries deal with COVID-19.

C.COVID-19 leading to racism against Chinese people.

D.COVID-19 affecting business and tourism worldwide.

2What did Bracho-Sanchez tell people with her words?

    A.The media helps educate people.

B.It’s harmful to fear what we don’t know.

C.It’s better to keep your fears to yourself.

D.It’s helpful to learn about unknown things.

3What attitude does the author hold toward the COVID-19 outbreak?

A.She hopes people work together to fight the virus.

B.She blames Chinese for spreading the virus abroad.

C.She thinks the media is responsible for misinformation.

D.She criticizes China for not doing enough to contain the virus.

  • 27、Chinese people are, quite rightly, proud of their food. However, when foreigners like Britons and Americans think of Chinese food, their impression of it is different to what you might think.

Growing up in the UK, the Chinese food I was used to eating was food I now recognize as being from Guangdong. For example, a typical dish I would order would be pork in sweet and sour sauce, probably with some rice and spring rolls on the side. This is the type of food we generally eat because most Chinese immigrants(移民) to the UK have come from Guangdong. You can tell, because when most British people try to copy the sound of Chinese, they actually copy the sound of Guangdong people—hearing the real Putonghua is sometimes a shock to British people who have grown up thinking it sounds completely different!

British attitudes to Chinese food may be changing, though. Chinese-American chef Ken Hom has been on British TV for 30 years, and he told BBC Food: “Chinese food at the beginning of the 80s (in the UK) was sweet and sour pork, mainly. Most Brits had the unchangeable view of Chinese food. Now you are seeing more local Chinese food from Sichuan, Hunan and other areas of China. It is no longer just Guangdong food.” Similarly, to most Americans, Chinese food doesn’t go too far past orange chicken and fortune cookies, but more Chinese local dishes are becoming successful, especially in big cities like New York.

Attitudes have not quite changed completely, though. Many foreigners who live in China will be familiar with this question from a relative back at home: “Have they given you dog yet?” Yes, perhaps because people still know too little about Chinese culture, many people believe that Chinese people love to eat dog meat. And of course, some people do eat dogs, which to Americans is like “eating a member of one’s family” according to Vision Times. Also, Chinese people eat many other things people in the West do not—chicken claws, duck heads and some animals’ organs.

But what do foreigners think when they come to China and taste real Chinese food? You’ll be glad to know that in my experience, the impressions have been very good.

【1】Why are some British people surprised when they hear the real Putonghua?

A.Because it sounds too funny to believe.

B.Because it’s different from what they hear.

C.Because they all find it hard to learn.

D.Because nobody has been to China before.

【2】What does chef Ken Hom think of the present Chinese food?

    A.Popular.

    B.Tastier.

    C.Richer

    D.Best.

    【3】How does Paragraph 3 develop?

    A.By giving examples.

    B.By making inferences.

    C.By analyzing.

    D.By reasoning.

【4】What can we infer from “Have they given you dog yet?”?

A.Foreigners don’t like eating dog meat at all.

B.Chinese hate dogs so they often eat them.

C.Chinese eat everything including dog meat.

    D.There are differences between cultures.

  • 28、Dogs are our best friends. That’s especially true after a disaster, such as an earthquake. When buildings fall down, search and rescue dogs help find trapped people. Dogs’ amazing noses can pick up the smell of survivors. Now scientists have developed an electronic tool that does the same thing. It’s taking smell detection(探测) to a whole new level.

The new invention is a sort of electronic nose, which can detect extremely low levels of many compounds(化合物) from people’s skin. This isn’t the first time engineers have developed such an object. Earlier models, however, have been bulky and expensive. They could not detect low levels of target compounds either. The new one is inexpensive and small enough to fit inside hand-held equipment.

The electronic nose can detect extremely slight smell of more than one compound at the same time. "Being able to do this, in such a small object, is the significant discovery," says Sotiris E. Pratsinis, Professor of Process Engineering&Materials Science at the Swiss Federal Institute of   Technology in Zurich. His team tested it in special spaces. They were like the small spaces where people might be trapped. Chemicals given off by the volunteers built up inside. The electronic equipment detected those compounds at unbelievably low levels.

The results were good news for the research team. But they may be not for our four-legged friends, who could soon be out of a job. "Ideally, this technology could replace search and rescue dogs," Pratsinis says.

Stephen Taylor, an electrical engineer, agrees that the new technology has some benefits over dogs. Still, he thinks it may be too soon to have our trusty friends retire. He suspects, "I foresee that such an object could add to the fine work done by the dogs." Taylor also pointed out some potential limitations of the new invention. "E-noses are useful, but can be very likely to be affected by unstable readings and interruption," he says.

【1】Why does the author talk about dogs at the beginning?

    A.To catch the readers’ attention.

B.To introduce the topic about e-noses.

C.To show what search and rescue dogs do.

D.To add background information for discussion.

【2】Which of the following best explains "bulky" underlined in paragraph 2?

    A.Complex

    B.Fragile

    C.Handy

    D.Large

【3】What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

    A.What e-noses’ working principle is.

    B.How e-noses are made.

C.What differences between dogs and e-noses are.

    D.How powerful e-noses are.

    【4】What does Stephen Taylor mean?

A.Dogs and e-noses could work together.

B.Search and rescue dogs will retire soon.

C.E-noses are more reliable than noses of dogs.

D.Dogs are better at finding out trapped people.

  • 29、   “One reason I can do stand-up comedy is because of all the material I have from being a male nurse”says Adrian Matei. False stereotypes(刻板观念)about nursing make for good jokes. But they may also put men off the job.

At a conference in May of the royal college of NursingRCN),David Ferrana nurse in Belfastproposed a campaign to promote nursing to men. His proposal did not pass as the view was that nursing should be intended for anyone with the right skillswhatever the gender(性别).

UndeterredMr. Ferran started a groupNorthern lreland Men in Nursingwhich visits schools to promote nursing as a career for men. Similar groups are being set up elsewhere. Several universities have launched social-media campaigns to draw men into nursing programmes.

With a growing decline of nurses across the National Health ServiceNHS),attracting men is becoming more urgent. In 2017for the first time in a decademore nurses left the profession than joined. Applications to nursing programmes are down by a third since 2016. And the shadow of Brexit makes it tougher for the NHS to fill its 40000-odd nurse vacancies from abroad. Doubts about whether they will be able to stay discourage nurses from EU countries.

Last month the NHS launched its biggest-ever nurse recruitment(招募)campaign. TV advertisements show them in action in hospital wards and ambulancesand on home visits. Some are male-an improvement from previous campaignsbut not enough to draw men in. Paul Vaughan from NHS Englandwho leads a proposal to change concepts of nursingthinks recruitment should avoid playing to gender stereotypes. He takes a negative view of slogans like "Are you man enough to be a nurse?" used in the campaign.

Views of nursing as a "woman's job" have deep roots. Florence Nightingale, who established the principles of modern nursing in the 1860s, insisted that men's rough hands were not fitted to touch, bathe and dress wounded limbs. The RCN did not even admit men as members until 1960. Outdated titles such as "sister" and "matron" (used for men as well) do not help. Mr. Ferran says some patients are surprised when he shows up, because they thought only women could be nurses.

Boys do not see nursing as a career because they lack role models. In films, female nurses are cast as helpers of heroic male doctors. "When I do ward rounds with my nurse mentor and she asks questions, patients often tum to me to respond" says Richard Dowell, a third-year nursing student. On the other hand, those men who go into nursing usually follow in the footsteps of a parent or realize that it could be a career after seeing a male nurse care for a relative.

Mr. Vaughan's team at the NHS is trying to promote the image of nursing by stressing that it is a professional job in which careers can be made, that it includes special skills such as cardiology or intensive care, and that it has a use for skills in technology and leadership. Most young people also do not realize that the job can take them round the world. For men, there is another bonus. According to his study of more than 20,000 advanced nurse practitioners, men reach the seventh band(a mid-career level) four years sooner than women partly because women are twice as likely as men to work part-time and are more likely to accept a lower band to secure a job they really want. As Mr. Dowell remembers, when he started his nursing studies, he was promised:" You'll go further because you are a man. "

B.It strongly recommends men to take up nursing.

C.It takes an effective policy of involving male nurses.

D.It changes the gender stereotypes in the designing.

A.the drawbacks of modern nursing principles

B.the consequence of lacking role models

C.the development of recruiting male nurses

D.the challenges of recruiting male nurses

    THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

    In Congress, July 4, 1776

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s god entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should d1 the causes which impel them to the separation.

We h2 these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created e3, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable R4, that among these are life, L5, and the pursuit of Happiness.

That to secure these rights, g 6 are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

That whenever any form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the P 7 to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, l8 its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such f9, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience has shown, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariable the same Object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their d 10, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

Expressions about water are almost as common as water itself. But many of the expressions using water have unpleasant meanings.

The expression “to be in hot water” is one of them. It is a very old expression, which can be 1 back to 500 years ago. The expression is used to mean being in trouble. One story says it got that meaning from the custom of throwing extremely hot water down on enemies attacking a castle.

Being in “deep water” is almost the same as being in “hot water”. When you are in deep water, you are in a difficult 2. Imagine a person who cannot swim being thrown in water over his head. You are in deep water when you are facing a problem that you do not have the ability to solve. The problem is too deep. You can be in deep water, for example, if you invest in stocks in complete 3 of the stock market.

"Water over the dam" is another expression about a past event. It is something that cannot be 4. The expression comes from the idea that water that has 5 a dam cannot be brought back again. When a friend is 6 by a mistake she has made, you might tell her to forget about it. You say it is water over the dam.

Another common expression, "to hold water," is about the strength or weakness of an idea or opinion that you may be arguing about. It probably comes from the way of testing the 7 of a container. If it can hold water, it is strong and has no holes in it. If your 8 can hold water, it is strong and does not have any holes. If it does not hold water, then it is weak and can not be 9.

"Throwing cold water" also is an expression that deals with an idea or 10. For example, you want to buy a new car because the old one has some problems. But you wife "throws cold water" on the idea, because she says a new car costs too much

  • 39、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

These days, football is one of the most popular sports in the world. Given that Neil Armstrong wanted to take a football to the Moon, we could even say that it is also the most popular sport out of this world! The history of the game goes back over two thousand years to Ancient China. It was then known as cuju(kick ball), a game using a ball of animal skins with hair inside. Goals were hung in the air. Football as we know it today started in Great Britain, where the game was given new rules.

That football is such a simple game to play is perhaps the basis of its popularity. It is also a game that is very cheap to play. You don't need expensive equipment; even the ball doesn't have to cost much money. All over the world you can see kids playing to their hearts 'content with a ball made of plastic bags; just like Pele did when he was a boy.

Another factor behind football's global popularity is the creativity and excitement on the field. It is fun enough to attract millions of people. You do not have to be a fan to recognize the skill of professional player-how they use their bodies to pass, score and defend can be amazing to see-or to feel the excitement of a game ending with a surprising twist.

What's more, football has become one of the best ways for people to communicate: it does not require words, but everyone understands it. It breaks down walls and brings people together on and off the field. Take, for example, the famous football game on Christmas Day 1914. World War I had broken out months before, but British and German soldiers put down their guns and played football together-one moment of peace to remember during years of conflict.

“Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, ...... “said Bill Shankly, the famous footballer and manager. “I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.” This might sound funny, but one only has to think about the Earth to realize that our planet is shaped like a football.
