26、A number of people hold a positive attitude toward artificial intelligence’s ability to reshape education nowadays. However, many feel such claims are not trustworthy.
Kentaro Toyama, a professor at the University of Michigan School of Information, is one of those doubtful about the idea of using AI in the classroom.
Toyama mentioned a situation he came across while working in an after-school program in digital literacy. He said,“In trying to teach students to use technology, the greatest difficulty in their learning was the technology itself.” As soon as he looked away from the students, they would “very quickly find the most fun games they could find on the computer and start playing them”. That suggests the problem with putting too much faith in AI for teaching. “There is great potential for it to be a distraction,” he said.
Toyama once surveyed a large group of people about their preference for the following educational scenarios (情景): a school with no teachers but powerful AI,one with bad teachers and no computers, one with bad teachers but strong computers, one with good teachers but no computers, one with good teachers and some computers, or one with great teachers and many computers. The result showed that nobody would send their children to a school with powerful AI but no teachers, or one with bad teachers but strong computers. Toyama concluded “Good teachers are what matters; everything else is secondary compared to that.”
Toyama is also concerned that AI and technology may widen the gap between disadvantaged schools and wealthier schools. He said, “The best way to think about technology is that it amplifies (放大) underlying forces. In the case of schools,well-resourced schools will find the best ways to use technology. But if you’re in a school district that is underfunded and parents are not involved, it doesn’t make a difference how good the technology is, and it will not turn that situation around.”
When asked when schools should adopt AI, Toyama suggested that they should wait until the basics are in place, teachers want it, and the technology is proved to have positive educational value.

28、Scientists may have found a way to reduce shortage of type O blood. Type O is the kind of blood that hospitals most often need. What the researchers are testing is an easier way to make type O blood out of other kinds of blood.
There are four main kinds of blood. Most people are born with one of these four: Type A, Type B, Type AB or Type O. Type O can be safely given to anyone. So it is commonly used when a person is injured or sick and has to have blood.
Type O is the most common blood group. But the supplies of it available in hospitals and blood banks are usually limited. This is because of the high demand for it. Type O blood is used in emergencies when there is no time to identify the patient’s blood type.
Giving A, B or AB to someone with a different blood type, including O, can cause a bad reaction by the person’s defense system. Their immune system can reject the blood. This immune reaction can be deadly.
The differences among blood types are linked to whether or not red blood cells contain certain kinds of sugar molecules (分子). These molecules are found on the surface of the cells. They are known as antigens (抗原), these antigens are found with Type A, B and AB blood but not with Type O.
More than twenty-five years ago, scientists found that the antigens could be removed to create what they called universal-type cells. They could be removed with chemicals called enzymes (酶). But large amounts of enzymes were required to make the change.
Doctor Henrik Clausen of the University of Copenhagen in Denmark led the study. The next step, he says, is to complete safety tests. The team is working with the American company ZymeQuest to test the new method. If it meets safety requirements and is not too costly, it will become a widely used life-saving tool to increase the supply of universal blood.

29、In the name of social distancing, this year’s graduation ceremonies have become different. However, one tradition has continued to exist — the square graduation cap, commonly known as a mortarboard hat.
European scholars (学者) have been wearing caps since the first universities were started in the 11th century, but their early caps looked more like Amelia Earhart’s pilot cap than the square caps we know today. By the middle of the 16th century, a new cap style made waves in universities: the “pileus quadratus“, a soft, square cap that required less material to make. Soon the two styles, round and square, became symbols of different statuses. One century later at the University of Oxford, under-graduates wore the older, rounded caps, while those with higher degrees were allowed to wear the pileus quadratus.
The first American colleges were started in the mid-1600s, and their class structures and degree requirements followed famous English universities. And European scholarly traditions were kept- including ideas of proper academic dress. Today, American graduates in law, medicine, and philosophy still wear rounded caps, but undergraduates always use the square cap.
Although the square hat has a centuries-old history, new cap traditions are popping up across the US. About 100 years ago, students began moving their tassels (流苏) from the right side of their cap to the left. To this day there are no formal rules on where the tassel should be placed, but the act of moving it from one side to the other has been widely popular.
