24、 As the host city of the next Winter Games, Beijing held a wonderful eight — minute show at the closing ceremony of the 2018 PyeongChang (韩国平昌) Winter Olympics on Sunday, sending a warm invitation to the whole world.
The show was directed by Zhang Yimou, a famous Chinese director who was also responsible for the eight — minute summer handover (交接) in Athens in 2004 as well as the opening and closing ceremonies in Beijing in 2008 that had a big success in the world.
Unlike Athens which focused on showing Chinese history with traditional culture like red lantern and jasmine (茉莉花), “Beijing 8 Minutes” gave special importance to the Chinese people’s sincere welcome to the world by using modern technology.
Leading the team were two dancers in costumes of panda puppets that are the world’s largest but the lightest at the same time, each weighing only about 10 kilograms. To reduce the pressure on the two dancers, researchers had tried hundreds of different materials until ending up with high — technology ones.
During the whole performance, the dancers and robots both wore LED lights on them that could be fit for the cold weather at PyeongChang Olympic Stadium without the risks of breaking.
The costumes were also made with a kind of special material to keep the dancers warm. Performers danced with 24 intelligent robots — standing for Beijing hosting the 24th Winter Olympics. They showed scenes of sports such as skating and skiing.
Pictures were projected to the icy floor while dancers skated across it, making a sense of augmented reality (增强现实). A number of moving screens in the middle of the field were also controlled by artificial intelligence(人工智能).

25、 Yesterday, I met a delightful woman at a work event. As we talked, she talked about her childhood in Manila, Philippines. She spoke about the way her culture values their elders, and she explained that children are educated from the time of birth to honor and respect people older than themselves.
It was refreshing (使振作) to hear that, and I enjoyed listening and learning. Here is the memory she shared that I found, so beautiful:
When she was growing up, her father had three jobs to care for his family. She said her dad never complained, and though he worked very hard, he always had time for them. One day, her father was injured at his full-time job. For several months, he was mailed temporary (暂时的) disability checks(支票) while he recovered.
When her father was able to return to his full-time job, he took all those disability checks that were sent to him while he was recovering and handed them back to the company. He told them that he had two good legs and arms, and did not need this money. He told them to give the money to people who could not work, to people who really needed it.
The woman telling the story was a little girl at that time. She had accompanied her father that very day when he went back to his company with all those unopened checks.
"My father is my hero," she remarked. Lowering her voice, she said she would never forget what he did, and what an inspiration and influential mentor he was on how to live life. From my communication with her, it was very obvious that her father's same sweet spirit had been passed down to this woman, and to her family.
Hearing this story was so refreshing to my soul. I hope it is the same to you too.

Many people live in Mango Street in a big old house. Esperanza lives behind it with her family. A lot of the people who have come from Mexico don’t speak English. Many miss their home country. Esperanza is young. Like her friends, she has to grow up fast. She is stuck between being a girl and being a woman. In the poor and dangerous area where she lives, this is difficult for her. Mexican people usually live in a close neighbourhood. This means that people live packed in(挤满的)together. Everyone knows everyone else. 27、One of sweetest memories as a child is of going down to the river and sitting comfortably on the bank. There I would enjoy the peace and quiet, watch the water rush downstream and listen to songs of birds. I would also watch the bamboo trees bend under the pressure from the wind and watch them return gracefully to their original state after the wind had died down.
When I think about the bamboo tree’s ability to bend and move back, the word “resilience” comes to my mind. When it is used for a person, this word means the ability to readily recover (恢复) from shock, sadness or any other suffering. Have you ever felt like you were going to snap? Have you ever felt like you were at your breaking point? Thankfully, you have survived to talk about it.
Life is a mixture (混合) of good times and bad times, happy moments and unhappy moments. The next time you are experiencing one of those bad times or unhappy moments that take you close to your breaking point, bend, but don’t break. Try your best not to let the situation get the best of you.
An amount of hope will take you through the unpleasant suffering. With hope for a better tomorrow or a better situation, things may not be as bad as they seem. The unpleasant suffering may be easier to deal with if the end result is worth having.
If things get tough and you are at your breaking point, show resilience. Like the bamboo trees, bend, but don’t break!
【1】What does the underlined word “snap” in the second paragraph most probably mean?
A. break B. change C. win D. complain
【2】 What can help people get through sufferings according to the writer?
A. Holding peace and quiet in mind.
B. Waiting until sufferings disappear.
C. Experiencing more bad times.
D. Hoping for a better tomorrow.
【3】What would be the best title of this passage?
A. Memories of Bamboo
B. Be Like Bamboo
C. Enjoying Bamboo
D. Characteristics of Bamboo
