二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   “The Great Good Place” is a short story by American novelist Henry James, first published in 1900. Its theme is that people need a place where they can escape the grind of daily life. This is an idea that Howard Schultz, who turned the Starbucks coffee chain into an international giant, used in his business strategy.

Born in 1952, Schultz grew up in Brooklyn. After university, he worked for a firm supplying coffee-making equipment. Shortly after working there, Schultz noticed that a company in Seattle was buying a surprisingly large amount of the firm's equipment, and he decided to investigate. It turned out to be a simple coffee-bean store, but its owners were committed to teaching the public to appreciate good coffee.

This store in Seattle opened in 1971 and took its name from Starbuck, a sailor in the classic novel Moby Dick.  Its logo was a two-tailed mermaid. Fascinated by its owners' commitment to coffee, Schultz joined Starbucks.  Later, on a trip to Europe, he was impressed by the way that street cafés in Italy were both meeting points and places to drink espresso. This was something American didn't have yet.

In 1985, Schultz started his own coffee-bar business, which soon became a success. Two years later, he got together with some other investors and bought Starbucks for US $ 3. 8 million. Adopting the name and logo, Schultz developed a marketing strategy that turned ordinary cafés into fashionable outlets for coffee. He used clever tricks, such as selling coffee in "short", "tall" and "grande" size rather than the usual small, medium, and large. Customers learned to pronounce unfamiliar Italian names like latte and macchiato. Schultz actually created a market that hadn't existed before.

Within 20 years, Schultz had taken coffee culture from the streets of Europe to almost every city in developed countries. Today, millions of people a week visit Starbucks locations in countries globally. Clearly, these customers are happy with the "great good place".

【1】What does the underlined word “grind” mean in paragraph 1?

    B.flavor

    C.virtue

    D.intervention

【2】Why did Schultz decide to join Starbucks?

A.He wanted to expand his business of equipment.

B.His trip Europe instructed him and changed his initial mind.

C.He was struck by the its owner's devotion to coffee.

D.He was impressed by the relaxing atmosphere in Starbucks.

【3】According to the passage, Schultz's business strategies do NOT include        .

A.opening stores all over the world.

B.changing the name and logo of the store at some locations.

C.selling coffee in “short”, “tall” and “grande” sizes.

D.His wisdom and cooperation with other investors.

【4】What is the main idea of the passage?

A.The Starbucks coffee chain originated in Seattle.

B.Street cafes in Italy usually have far more customers than cafes in America.

D.Schultz successfully transformed Starbucks into an international giant.

  • 22、Would it surprise you to learn that the vast majority of adults—around 75 per cent—tell up to two lies every day? That’s according to a recent US study. What this suggests then is that you’ve probably told a lie or two in the past 24 hours and chances are you’ve also been lied to.

Before you start protesting your innocence or confronting loved ones and colleagues, though, it’s worth noting that the bulk of these lies fall into the “hardly worth mentioning” category. Think little white lies such as attempting to spare someone’s feelings or gently twisting the facts to avoid looking bad.

People tell lies for a variety of reasons, say the US researchers. Just over 20 percent are told in a bid to avoid other people; a further 20 percent are jokes; 14 percent are told in self-protection; 13 percent are attempts to make a good impression; 11 percent are told to protect others; and 9 percent are for personal gain. Still, less than 12 percent of lies can be categorized as “big lies”— and these are usually the ones that really matter. An example of a big lie, according to the study’s authors, would be saying “I love you” without being sincere.

So, are there any body language giveaways that can help “out” someone who’s lying? Back in 2015, University of Michigan researchers identified some common behaviors among liars, including frowning or grimacing (扮怪相), looking directly at the questioner in a bid to appear trustworthy, and overcompensating by gesturing with both hands. A more recent study, from Erasmus University in Rotterdam, found that liars may unconsciously mimic the body language of those around them while their brains are otherwise engaged in telling lies. It’s also worth looking out for the “eye dart”: when we glance to the left, we’re attempting to recall facts and events; when we look to the right, we’re thinking more creatively.

Vocal factors can offer a good clue, too. People who are being deliberately dishonest — or who lack certainty in what they’re saying — tend to speak slower and place less emphasis on the middle of words, according to a study at the Sorbonne University in Paris. Interestingly, the researchers also found that listeners automatically registered these voice changes as a sign of dishonesty, even when they weren’t being asked to do so.

Earlier studies have suggested that we may know intuitively when someone is lying. It’s important to remember though that none of these pointers offer undeniable evidence that you’re dealing with a liar. After all, some people just grimace more or speak slower than others.

【1】Which of the following lies are not categorized as “hardly worth mentioning”?

    A.“I love your new haircut.”

B.“Relax. It makes no difference to me.”

    C.“I am so into you.”

D.“My train was cancelled” instead of “I overslept and missed my train”.

【2】How does a liar’s body language give away himself?

A.He looks directly at the questioner to show his trust in him.

B.He unintentionally repeats the gesture made by the person he talks to.

C.He keeps glancing to the left from time to time when he talks.

D.He speaks slower and emphasizes the middle of the words less.

【3】What can we infer from the passage?

A.On average, all of us are lied to once or twice a day.

B.Most of the lies are told for the benefit of others.

C.A liar tends to gesture too much with both hands when he lies.

D.A dishonest man lacks certainty in what he’s saying.

【4】Which of the following statements does the author agree with?

A.We should rely on our intuition when spotting a liar.

B.Body language alone can serve as a sign of dishonesty.

C.Those who grimace more while speaking must be a liar.

D.There is no reliable pointer to identify a liar.

  • 23、Sometime back, after a six-year-old lioness named Magigi repeatedly killed cattle, Botswana authorities caught and moved her into Central Kalahari Game Reserve, far from people. Magigi spent most of her time within the reserved protective boundaries, but after a year she escaped outside and was shot dead by a farmer. New research Maude and his colleagues have conducted confirms that Magigi's unfortunate story is common for many relocated lions. For decades, wildlife managers in a number of African countries have used such a kind way to deal with lions that repeatedly kill livestock (牲畜).But the new research shows that after lions are moved, most continue to kill livestock and endanger villagers' living.

Across Africa, lion numbers have fallen by 43 percent in the past two decades, to as few as 23,000 animals today. About 3,000 remain in Botswana. The sharp declines are primarily driven by development-lions now occupy just 8 percent of their historic habitat. With less space set aside for conservation, lions are more frequently coming into contact with humans. These are usually farms, expanding around the edges of the protected areas. The lions eat livestock, which negatively impacts the livelihood of the farmers in these rural areas. Without a proper way to prevent these attacks, the dinners often turn to deadly force, shooting or poisoning the lions, which has resulted in the decrease in lion population.

Rather than trying to move lions, wildlife conservationist Glyn Maude says, emphasis should be placed on reducing the chances of lions encountering and killing livestock in the first place. Many preventative measures are being tested in various African countries, including hiring lion guardians (护卫者) to monitor these big cats, creating lion-proof fences, sending out lion text alerts, and teaching herders to keep livestock away from high-risk areas.

【1】Why was Magigi moved to a reserve?

A.To stop her from being caught.

B.To prevent her from killing cattle.

C.To get her to stay with her family.

D.To train her to get along with people.

【2】What is the major reason for the decline in the lion population in Africa?

    A.Illegal wildlife trade.

    B.Human-lion conflict.

    C.A natural disaster.

D.The lack of food in their habitat.

【3】What can we infer from Maude's words in the last paragraph?

A.Lions will be fenced in to avoid meeting people.

B.The relocation of lions has proven to be effective.

C.Prevention is the cure for lions' attacking livestock.

D.It's impossible for lions to live with humans in harmony.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A.Big Cats' Relocation Proving Deadly

B.Lions Shot Dead after Attacking a Man

C.The Tragic Story of a Magical Lioness
