二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   The world is witnessing the worst refugee crisis(难民危机) since World War II. Tens of thousands of people are fleeing civil war and unrest(动荡) to find new homes in Europe — sometimes with sad consequences(后果).

On Aug 27, Austrian officials found the dead bodies of 71 Syrian migrants(移民) in a deserted truck near Austrian-Hungarian border, just as European leaders were holding a meeting in Vienna to figure out how to deal with the refugee crisis. On the same day, 200 migrants were feared dead and 200 rescued as two boats packed with refugees sank off the coast of Libya, according to media reports.

The terms “migrant” and “refugee” are often used interchangeably. But there’s a big difference between them, says an article in the Atlantic magazine. Here is how the United Nations defines refugees:

“Refugees are persons fleeing armed conflict(武装冲突) or ill-treatment. Their situation is often so dangerous and intolerable that they cross national borders to search for safety in nearby countries. …These are people for whom denial(拒绝) of protection has possibly deadly consequences.”

Migrants, on the other hand, move mainly to improve their lives by finding work, or for education, family reunion or other reasons, said the agency.

Countries should offer refugees certain protections under their international treaty obligations(条约义务). This is why some states hesitate to admit those people who are fleeing unrest in their home countries.

When talking about refugee and immigration problems, many media outlets use “illegal immigrant”(非法移民). Critics say that it gives the impression that it’s the person that is illegal rather than their actions. The UN and the EU parliament have called for an end to the phrase, the BBC reported.

1The numbers mentioned in Para. 2 prove _____.

A.how serious the refugee crisis in Austria is

B.that it is the worst refugee crisis in the world

C.what sad consequences some refugees face

D.that the number of refugees is so large

2The differences between “refugee” and “migrant” are written with the purpose of _____.

    A.defining the two words clearly

B.indicating why some states are not willing to admit refugees

C.showing that refugees are more than migrants

D.urging European countries to accept more refugees

3According to the text, “refugee” differs from “migrant” in that _____.

they both cross national borders but with different purposes

refugees are illegal while migrants are legal

refugees may face deadly consequences while migrants are relatively safe

refugees are treated badly while migrants are highly respected

    A.①④ B.①③ C.②③④ D.①③④

4According to the text, what may be discussed in the next several paragraphs?

    A.Explanations for “illegal immigrant”

B.Examples about the refugee crisis in Europe

    C.Measures to offer refugee protections

D.Causes of the refugee crisis in Europe

  • 27、   A campaign (活动)is being launched to encourage children to give up 30 minutes of screen time a day to head for the great outdoors.

The newly formed Wild Network — a cooperation of nearly 400 organisations --- is trying to attract teenagers away from television and computer screen and into fields, woods and parks. Organisers say that it is the UK's biggest ever campaign to reconnect children with nature and outdoor play, and that it could help improve fitness, mental(精神的)health and general well  being. A documentary film, Project Wild Thing, will announce the launch at more than 50 cinemas across the UK from Friday. It looks at the increasingly weak link between children and nature.

Andy Simpson, chairman of the Wild Network, said: "The sad truth is that kids have lost touch with nature. Time spent outdoors is down, activity areas and levels are falling strongly and the ability to identify common species (物种)has been lost."

Suggestions of how to get more time in nature include camping or racing and observing autumn colour on trees and so on. From January, the network will aim to make suggestions to politicians on how government can do more to get children muddy (沾满泥污的)and bright¬-eyed.

This is not the first time the message of less screen, more play has been brought up. Children in the 1980s were asked to do the same by the BBC TV series Why Don't You, which somewhat confusingly called on its viewers to "switch off your TV set, and do something less boring instead".

1The purpose of the campaign is to call on kids____________.

A.to love animals B.to play outdoors

C.to give up screens D.to protect nature

2What may make Andy Simpson sad?

A.Kids' disability to name some creatures.

B.The falling duration of Rids' vacations.

C.Strict rules on kids' outdoor activities.

    D.The disappearance of common species.

3What does the network appeal to the government to do?

A.Reconnect kids with nature. B.Provide kids with more mud.

C.Take measures to protect kids. D.Pay attention to eye protection.

4Why does the author mention the BBC TV series?

A.To tell the development of BBC TV series.

B.To prove the recognition of his suggestion.

C.To show the TV series caused confusion.

D.To compare present TV series with old ones.

  • 28、   Not long ago I saw the following headline: “An anti-homework trend(趋势)goes global”. The reasoning: It stresses children out and it steals “precious family time”.

Hmm… I wonder. As a teacher, one of the problems I often come across is that students attach far too little importance to their studies, resulting in bad or incomplete work. I also wonder about the “precious family time”. If homework were abolished(废除), would the time freed up be used for reading poetry aloud at the dinner table or having heart-to-heart discussion about the social and political landscape(局面)? In the age of the Internet and games such as Candy Crush Saga, which have absorbed the time and interest of otherwise intelligent adults, I am doubtful.

When I was a kid, homework actually created precious family time. I still remember, after supper, clearing the table and replacing the dishes with my schoolbooks. And then, in swing shifts, my working-class parents would sit down with me and, to the best of their abilities, help me when and where they could.

I have often thought that the homework question could be dealt with if one thought of homework in terms of learning to play a musical instrument. For me, this was the clarinet(单簧管), which I began learning to play at age 9. Every week I took a 30-minute lesson from an old Polish man, Mr. Markiewicz. “Practice an hour a day, and you’ll be playing the clarinet before you know it.” Because my motivation was strong, I did practice an hour a day, and I did learn it in a reasonable amount of time.

Let’s get rid of homework, but only the word “homework”, and replace it with “practice”. As a teacher, it’s all I ask: that my students listen up in the class and then go home to practice, so that when they return to me to show how much they understand, I—and their parents—can be proud of them.

1What might happen in the house with no homework according to the author?

    A.Students will play games.

    B.Students will develop new interest.

C.There will be more precious family time.

D.There will be more arguments among the family.

2What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3?

A.Mourn his precious family time’s passing.

    B.Show the powerful parental forces.

    C.Prove the advantage of homework.

D.Describe his uneasy life as a student.

3What does the author suggest students do about the homework?

A.Get rid of it. B.Don’t see it as a load(负担).

C.Take great pride in it. D.Improve their motivation(动机)for it.

4Which is a suitable title for the text?

A.Why to value the family time.

    B.An anti-homework trend begins.

C.How to solve the homework problem.

    D.Developing hobbies can replace homework.

  • 29、   Many doors close for those who have ever been in prison for a crime. It can be difficult for former prisoners to reenter society. A number of training programs are aimed at reopening doors for these men and women.

“Together We Bake” teaches cooking and marketing skills to women who have spent time in prison so they can start new lives. It is a 10-week program which teaches women how to bake and sell cookies. Two friends, Tricia Sabatini and Stephanie Wright, created the program.

“I have a background in social work and she is an amazing baker,” Ms. Wright explains. “We discovered that for this population of women, returning from prison into the community, there aren’t a lot of resources for them. So we thought we could combine our passions(激情) and develop this job as a training program. “Stephanie Wright says they started the program earlier this year.” We had two classes so far that have graduated. This is our third class. We have eight women currently in this class. We’ve 16 women graduated in the first two classes.”

Terry Garred is one of the graduates. She says the program helped her turn her life around. Next she hopes to complete her high school studies. She is also working for “Together We Bake” to help other women follow the path she took.

The program includes classes in which the women talk about their experiences and learn communication and job skills. Thirty-six-year-old Jamie White had spent three years in jail, which made her a little puzzled about her future life back into society. But she found those meeting were very helpful.
