二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、The man wearing the bright yellow jacket, sitting in front of a multi-coloured street art mural (壁画), is clearly a huge fan of colour. And secondary school art teacher James Bennett is trying to both brighten up his home town, and hopefully inspire young people.

“It’s like creating a visual gallery outside,” said the 38-year-old from Nuneaton in Warwickshire. When young I couldn’t afford to go to London on the train, or even Birmingham, and pay to get into a gallery. Roy Lichtenstein (American pop artist) was a big hero of mine, and I really wanted to see his work. I eventually got there, my mum saved up and we went, but that wasn’t possible for everybody.

James has been interested in creating artwork around Nuneaton for several years now, and is a director of community group Reel People, which supports young people through art and sport.

“Art is massively important, especially in a place that’s poor. There’s no money to be making fancy new buildings and all that sort of stuff. I believe it gives things identity, brightens people’s lives up, helps mental health and makes a big difference to any community. People want art, creativity and culture.”

James teaches at a school in Small Heath, Birmingham, a city which is famously home to Digbeth, an area filled with street art. That’s where he got his inspiration from. He remembered going to something called City of Colours about four or five years ago and seeing all the art going up. He hoped he could take a little slice of this back to Nuneaton.

The work of many leading street artists decorates the buildings in Digbeth, and James has persuaded some of them to appear at Reel People.

“A lot of the time, kids think these people live in America, Australia, but there’s so many amazing artists living in the Midlands. It’s an amazing thing to do. Nuneaton has been seeing a lot more street art in the last couple of years. People here seem to accept the artwork which should help to get more walls painted. Towns need a bit more colour, we have to be honest.”

【1】What do we learn about James?

A.He is a fan of art and sport

B.He is devoted to hometown culture

C.He is eager to provide art courses

【2】Which of the following best describes James’s childhood?

    A.Lonely

    B.Inspiring

    C.Carefree

    D.Challenging

    A.The worrying situation in Nuneaton

    B.His teaching experience in Nuneaton

C.His travel to City of Colors years ago

    D.The encouragement from leading artists

【4】What’s the best title for the text?

    A.Know color, know the present

    B.Art: A national tendency

    D.Nuneaton: The home of art

  • 22、   A young teenager interested in robotics, T. J. Evarts noticed some of his friends became easily distracted from the road by a variety of activities, especially texting, as they learned how to drive. Actually, this phenomenon is quite common among those in their teens and twenties. A 2018 Pew Research Center study shows about a third of teenagers aged 16 and 17 admitted to texting while driving. According to the survey conducted by Federal Communications Commission, more than 3,100 people were killed in vehicles because of distracted driving, more than 37% were under 20 in 2020.

Now 20, Evarts has invented the SMART wheel (SMART for Safe Motorists Alert for Restricting Texting), hoping to change these statistics and how new drivers function on the road. His brainchild began as a mixture of aluminum and coat hangers. Then it was developed into a structured system of sensors that can be attached to the steering wheel of most vehicles.

Evarts said the technology tracks the placement of a driver’s hands on a steering wheel, an indicator of how focused the driver’s attention is on the road. Moving one or both hands off the wheel for more than four seconds will cause a flashing red light to appear on the SMART wheel along with a ringing noise to signal the driver, while the data gathered through the process can be sent to a parent’s app linked by Bluetooth.

The CEO sees his invention as a way to ease parents’ concerns when their children start driving vehicles on their own, and help to limit the number of distractions routinely challenging drivers, a problem that has only grown worse with mobile technology. Evarts said his company is also setting up a reward system into the app that will grade drivers’ performances and identify ways to improve their driving.

【1】Why did Evarts invent the SMART wheel?

A.To equip teenagers with driving skills.

B.To draw drivers’ attention to speeding.

C.To keep the drivers focused on driving.

D.To increase the number of teenage drivers.

【2】What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.One of steering wheels’ tasks.

B.A coat hanger for the system.

    C.The mixture of drivers’ data.

    D.Evarts’ initial invention idea.

【3】Which behavior will set off the red light on the SMART wheel?

A.Placing both hands on the steering wheel.

B.Holding the steering wheel with one hand.

C.Texting the driver while sitting in the back.

D.Calling friends or parents using earphones.

    【4】What is the SMART wheel?

    A.A habit-adjusting system.

    B.A teen-rewarding system.

    C.A driver-training project.

    D.A fault-finding project.

  • 24、   Attitudes toward new technologies often fall along generational lines. That isgenerallyyounger people tend to outnumber older people in face of a technological shift.

It is not always the casethough. When you look at attitudes toward driverless carsthere doesn’t seem to be a clear generational divide. The public overall disagree on whether they’d like to use a driverless car.In a study last yearof all people surveyed,48 percent said they wanted to ride in onewhile 50 percent did not.

The fact that attitudes toward selfdriving cars appear to be so steady across generations suggests how transformative the shift to driverless cars could be.Not everyone wants a driverless car now—and no one can get one yet—but among those who are open to themevery age group is similarly engaged.

When it comes to driverless carsdifferences in attitude are obvious based on factors not related to age.College graduatesfor exampleare particularly interested in driverless cars compared with those who have less education59 percent of college graduates said they would like to use a driverless car compared with 38 percent of those with a highschool diploma or less.

Where a person lives matterstoo.More people who lived in cities and suburbs said they wanted to try driverless cars than those who lived in rural areas.

While there’s reason to believe that interest in selfdriving cars is going upa person’s age will have little to do with how selfdriving cars can become mainstream.Once driverless cars are actually available for salethe early adopters will be the people who can afford to buy them.

1What usually happens when a new technology appears?

    A.It benefits society greatly.

B.The old are not happy with it.

C.People of different ages react differently.

D.It will separate the old from the young.

2What does the author say about the driverless car?

A.It makes people’s life more convenient.

B.It can lead to fewer road accidents.

C.It may start a revolution in the car industry.

D.It does not seem to create a generational divide.

3Who are the most potential customers of the driverless car?

    A.The seniors. B.The wealthy.

    C.The educated. D.The car lovers.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was evening and time for my little sister and me to take our showers and get ready for bed. As I passed the mirror in the bathroom, there it was—a wild hair right in the middle of my forehead, threatening to be the beginning of the third eyebrow (眉毛). I went into the shower trying to think of a solution, and then I spotted a razor (剃刀). I took it and started trying to shave off the savage hair.

Usually I would trust my mom’s advice about what to do in this sort of situation, but this was just too complicated for her—or so I thought. Well, while I was shaving that hair off, the razor slipped, and I ended up shaving off half my eyebrow! Then I did what any girl would do in this situation—I tried to even them out. When I was finished, I looked in the mirror. It was a disaster! I tried to figure out if there was anyway to fix this mess. Thankfully, I found a way to hide my mistake. I put my bangs over my eyebrows. It worked perfectly!

Just then my parents called me to come and say good night. Nobody noticed my eyebrows, but they did notice my little sister’s eyebrows! It turned out that while I was fighting the stray hair, she had found another razor in the drawer and began copying me. Now her eyebrows were completely missing! My parents were very confused until they finally noticed that half my eyebrows were gone as well. After a lot of questioning, I broke down and confessed (坦白) to what had happened.

I thought that my parents would be mad at me until my mom took me aside to tell me that when she was a pre-teen, she had done a similar thing. In her case, it was her underarms. While away at camp on a swimming day, she was extremely embarrassed because she had some long hairs in her armpits (腋窝).

    注意:

    1. 续写词数应为120左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

My grandma, her mom, had told her she was too young to shave yet.
