二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Plants take carbon dioxide(CO2)out of the atmosphere to do photosynthesis(光合作用), and thus help reduce the greenhouse gases warming the planet. At least, that’s how the story went before researchers from the Carnegie Institution for Scienee(CIS)realized that today’s carbon dioxide levels cause the plants to behave in a way that actually contributes to global warming.

The CIS scientists unveiled new research that shows increased carbon dioxide levels cause plants to keep water that otherwise would have evaporated (蒸发)from their leaves, entered the atmosphere and helped cool the planet. At local levels, this effect can increase the temperature so that it is 25 percent higher than what the greenhouse effect would have done on its own. This increased warming results from plant leaves’ natural reaction to high CO2 environments. Plant leaves have tiny vents that open or close to let the plant breathe. In the presence of a high carbon dioxide concentration, these vents don’t need to open as wide to breathe in the same amount of CO2, and so they close up to prevent additional water from escaping.

Most climate models don’t take into account the cooling effect of this water, so the CIS researchers generated new climate models based on their understanding of this phenomenon. The new model showed that, averaged over the entire globe, the decreased water loss from plants accounts for 16 percent of warming of the land surface, with greenhouse effects accounting for the rest. But in some regions, such as parts of North America and eastern Asia, the effect can account for more than 25 percent of the total warming.

Unfortunately, these results don’t just confirm that the contribution of CO2 to global warming is worse than scientists previously thought, but also greatly add complexity to any attempts to reverse (反转)the warming process.

【1】What will happen in high CO2 environments?

    A.Plants close up their vents.

    B.Plants stop breathing in CO2.

C.Plants are not likely to react.

    D.Plants suffer much water loss.

【2】What is known about the research?

A.It was carried out in certain regions.

B.It took many climate models into consideration.

C.It confirms CO2 doesn’t contribute to global warming.

D.It shows global warming is more complex than expected.

【3】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

    A.Plants Can Warm the Planet

B.Plants Are Greener on the Earth

    C.Global Warming Becomes Complex

D.New Climate Models Are on the Way

  • 22、The Upside to Being Outside

Research shows that being in nature makes people feel good, whether they’re roughing it in the wilderness for days or just hanging out at a local park for a while. One study was conducted in the city of Birmingham, Alabama. Researchers found that most participants’ mood and well-being improved significantly when they spent time in urban parks, even though the average visit was only around half an hour.

【1】 For example, scientists in the United Kingdom studied the impact of the “30 Days Wild” campaign. It challenged people to interact with nature for 30 days by enjoying earthy activities like feeding birds and planting flowers. Participants were measurably happier and healthier throughout the challenge…and for months afterwards, too.

How does nature boost people’s happiness? Scientists say that spending time in natural settings reduces stress and anxiety, which benefits mental and physical health. Research shows our brains are more relaxed in natural settings. So, kicking back in a park is a bit like treating your mind to a restful mini vacation.

To most people, it’s not news that nature can be calming. But multiple studies have found that spending time in nature also has some more surprising benefits, like improving creativity and problem-solving. 【2】 Another found that exposure to nature helped people score better on tests. That’s more proof that going outside is a smart move!

What accounts for the connection with cognition and creativity? It could be that a good dose of nature acts as a cure to information overload. Everyday life involves a lot of multitasking. Some scientists theorize that spending time in nature enables our brains to rest and recover from mental tiredness. 【3】

Naturally, scientific studies don’t cover everything that’s great about the great outdoors. 【4】 From recreation and exercise to happiness and creativity, there are lots of upsides to getting outside.

A.One study revealed that people were better at figuring out puzzles after a four-day camping trip.

B.According to many scientific studies, there’s a good chance it’ll make you happier, healthier, and more creative.

C.What’s more, the lift people get from nature is long lasting.

D.Lots of people enjoy fun activities outside, like swimming, riding bikes, or climbing trees.

E.When the only light you’ve seen all day is the glow of a screen, it might be a good idea to switch it off.

F.This means that whether you’re studying or playing video games, heading outside to give your brain a break might help you get to the next level.

  • 23、During the outbreak of novel coronavirus, cities are locked down and borders are closed. Science, on the contrary, is becoming more open. And this “open science” is already making a difference.

Soon after the epidemic started in China, a research team from Fudan University in Shanghai successfully sequenced(测定序列)the DNA of the virus. But they didn’t keep the information to themselves. Instead, they placed the sequences on GenBank, an open-access data platform, so researchers around the world could download them for free and start studying the virus.

Due to this openness, pharmaceutical(制药的)companies across the globe are now able to work simultaneously to develop a vaccine. “There may be room for multiple different vaccines for different purposes and different age groups,”Amesh Adalja, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Security in the US, told Al Jazeera.“The bigger menu we have of vaccines, the more resilient(有适应力的)well be against coronavirus outbreaks in the future. ”

Major drug companies around the world are also sharing their study results. Remdesivir, a drug originally developed by US company Gilead Sciences to treat Ebola, s found to be promising in fighting against the novel coronavirus. Currently, two trials of the drug are already underway in China, and the results might be available as soon as April, according to The Verge.

This openness in science is going to be even more crucial in the future. With climate change, increasing globalization, and population shifts, epidemics will not go away, and might even become more frequent, Dan Barouch, a Harvard Medical School professor, told Harvard Magazine.

He said, “No one group can do everything. It has to be a coordinated(合作的)approach. But I do think that the world has a greater sense of readiness this time to develop knowledge, drugs, and therapeutics(疗法)very rapidly.

Every epidemic is indeed a crisis, but it can also be a learning opportunity. One redeeming(补偿的)factor of the COVID﹣19 outbreak is that it is helping science adapt for the better.

【1】What does the article mainly talk about?

A.Coordinated efforts to fight the epidemic.

B.The significance of openness and sharing of scientific knowledge.

C.Something positive we’ve learned from the epidemic.

D.What needs to be done to prevent future epidemics.

【2】What is the positive effect of the research team from Fudan University placing the genetic sequence of the virus onto GenBank?

A.They alerted the world to the danger of the virus.

B.They helped remove people’s fear of the virus.

C.They invited collective efforts worldwide to develop a vaccine.

D.They showed the world how to produce a vaccine.

【3】What does the underlined phrase“work simultaneously” in paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.work at the same time.

    B.work effectively

    C.work continuously

    D.work happily

【4】What is the author’s purpose of mentioning remdesivir in the text?

A.To introduce a possible cure for the epidemic.

B.To prove that many drug companies readily share their discoveries.

C.To compare the treatment of Ebola and the novel coronavirus.

D.To show that the novel coronavirus will soon be contained.

【5】Which of the following would Dan Barouch probably disagree with?

A.The increase in globalization may worsen future epidemics.

B.Epidemics will be less frequent thanks to scientific development.

C.No single group can fight against the epidemics independently.

D.The world is becoming better prepared to deal with epidemics.

  • 24、   The modern manager has to play the role of coach in charge of their team. And that requires an understanding of the different personality types they may be managing, and indeed the role their own personality may play in the way they manage.

Karl Moore, a professor at McGill University in Canada, has written two recent articles on the role of different personality types in business. One of the most common divides is between introverts and extroverts. Mr. Moore calculates that around 40% of the population are introverts, 40% are extroverts and 20% are "ambiverts" who can show both characteristics.

It is easy to assume that the extroverts are most likely to go far in business. An academic study found that extroverts were 25% more likely to be in a high earning job than those who were less outgoing. It is possible that working in a high-paid job makes people more confident and outgoing, although characteristics tend to develop early in life.

But introverts should not give up hope of getting a promotion. A study in 2017 found that introverts were slightly more likely than extroverts to be appointed as chief executive.

Ambiverts can be good salespeople because they are able to listen to their customers and understand their needs but also have the energy to sell their firms' goods and services. Mr. Moore thinks that successful executives have to become ambiverts at times in order to succeed. Introverts must try to show enthusiasm, or make an inspiring speech, when the situation calls for it. And extroverts need to shut up and listen to their teams — not least because when the boss speaks first, juniors will be unwilling to disagree.

What makes life tricky for managers is that people don't have labels on their foreheads stating which kind of personality type they are. Sometimes people make it obvious. But that means managers have to spend time chatting to and observing their team members before deciding how best to get them motivated and inspired.

【1】What should a manager do to manage his team?

A.He should protect his team members well.

B.He should be the best coach in the company.

C.He should have an understanding of his own personality.

D.He should understand his team members' characters.

【2】What is the third paragraph mainly about?

    A.The ways of becoming extroverts.

    B.The cause of becoming extroverts.

    C.The strengths of becoming extroverts.

    D.The importance of becoming extroverts.

【3】Which of the following statements will Mr. Moore agree?

    A.Extroverts should be more patient.

B.Introverts should listen to the teams.

C.Ambiverts are more likely to become salesmen.

D.A boss should employ more extroverts than introverts.

【4】What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to?

    A.The tricky life.

    B.The type of characters.

    C.The label of team members.

    D.The manager's forehead.
