  • 26、Efforts of growing organic vegetables that brings much less damage to the farmland paid off as Yunnan Province in southwest China has been trying to deliver its promise to better protect its natural resources.

In the trail field under the management of Yunling Organic Agriculture Development Co., Ltd , the organic matter in soil has been improved while content of some heavy metals has been reduced ever since the organic planting project started in 2017. The green fertilizer they use has left close to little pollution in the soil, which is of critical significance as the field that covers 240 hectares of land is located right in the middle of Kunming Songhuaba Reservoir Nature Reserve.

Now, more than 50 tons of vegetables of more than 20 varieties from the field are sent to places across China every day. Although the price is three to five times higher than that of ordinary vegetables, it is popular in the middle and high-end retail markets in east, central and south China. In Tonghai County, one of the main producing areas, the organic vegetables have begun to enter Southeast Asian market.

“A revolutionary change should be made to the traditional growing mode or cultivation technology. • 27、   Paired up in the right setting, dogs and horses can have their fair share of fun—at times even playing together and mimicking each other's facial expressions, new research suggests. These findings, published in the journal Behavioural Processes, mark the first example of so-called rapid facial mimicry occurring between play partners of different species, and indicate the existence of a universal language of play. Though the purpose behind play remains unclear, scientists believe the behavior arises to help animals improve hunting and social skills, relieve stress or develop relationship with each other, study author Elisabetta Palagi says, an animal behaviorist at the University of Pisa in Italy.

Learning more about the contexts in which different animals play around—especially across branches of the tree of life—could tell researchers a lot about play's origins and evolution. But apart from a handful of studies featuring humans and their pets, scientists haven't had many chances to analyze examples of interspecies play.

In 2018, when someone sent Palagi a YouTube video featuring a dog and a horse playing together, she took the chance to research further. The two species, she noted early on, were especially good research objects of interspecies friendship, because they had both been shown to recognize facial expressions in other animals.

Putting together a team of research students, Palagi began to collect and analyze hundreds of other videos with dogs and horses partnering in play. Only 20 videos ended up meeting the team's requirements: showing animals freely playing on their own, without human interference, for at least30 seconds.

Several common themes quickly arose. When playing, dogs and horses often mirrored each other's moves, jumping and pushing at each other. They also rolled on their backs and showed their throats and stomachs—a strong sign that they were at ease and even communicating their friendly intentions. Despite millions of years of evolution between them, the two species had found common ground for the only purpose of fun, said Palagi.

The two animals also frequently copied each other's facial expressions, both using the relaxed, open mouths—behayior that had never been noted between a pair of animals of different species. Horses and dogs may look and behave in extremely different ways, says Barbara Smuts, a behavioral ecologist at the University of Michigan who wasn't involved in the study. But fun is perhaps a language that doesn't need to be taught. Two very dissimilar animals, Smuts says, can still discuss how to play in a way that's comfortable for both.

【1】What do scientists find about dogs and horses?

    A.They share similar facial expressions.

B.They can build up a lasting relationship.

C.They often share hunting and social skills.

D.They have a special way to communicate.

【2】How did Elisabetta Palagi study dogs and horses further?

A.By playing with dogs and horses together.

B.By pairing up dogs and horses in a setting.

C.By watching videos showing their play scene.

D.By recording their play for 30 seconds every day.

【3】What does the underlined part "at ease" in Paragraph 5 most probably mean?

    A.Feeling relaxed.

    B.Looking similar.

    C.Getting smart.

    D.Turning sociable.

【4】What is the significance of the study?

A.It can help humans get along with animals.

B.It studies interspecies play for the first time.

C.It explains animals' way of communicating.

D.It analyzes animals' facial expressions in detail

  • 28、I’m attending a weekend workshop. What the leader asked us to follow was simple enough. She was a good teacher—she described what we had to do, then showed us how, then asked us to do it.—that’s a typical teaching method.

But I was finding the do part far more difficult and stressful than I had expected. I was outside my comfort zone, feeling awkward and uncertain. I tried to follow her directions, but I made mistakes in front of the others, and it felt embarrassing (令人尴尬的).

Here’s the thing: Although the act of learning is related to abilities, behaviors and methods, the experience of learning is emotional (激起情绪的). And it’s the emotional experience of learning—of being a beginner and making mistakes, often publicly—that keeps people from even trying to learn.

While learning may not be that hard, being a beginner can be very hard, especially when we see ourselves, and want to be seen by others in a group, as skilled and confident. Being awkward can even feel shameful. But it’s just a stage we have to go through in order to become graceful and competent. And our unwillingness to experience this stage can stop our future growth. This is especially true of areas where you, re already an expert.

Though I have taught leadership programs for 30 years, I still spend at least three weeks every year going to various personal development programs. More often than not, I, like a beginner, tried new skills, feeling awkward and even shame for not being better at a skill. And those are hard feelings to feel. But they are the unavoidable growth pains that come with learning, developing, and becoming better at something.

I wish, by the end of the weekend workshop, I could be completely comfortable and relaxed in all our activities. But that’s not the case. Maybe I’m a little more comfortable. But learning takes time and comfort takes experience.

There is one thing the workshop made me more comfortable doing: staying in the discomfort of learning long enough to learn.

  • 29、The term “social distancing” has been at the center of public conversation for a while. But it’s not “social” distance we are trying to promote. It’s physical separation. In fact, preserving social ties — even at a distance — is essential for both mental and physical health. The results of an analytic review published in 2017 indicate that a lack of social support is on a par with smoking cigarettes as a risk factor for health.

Given this fact, how might we best stay connected with others while maintaining physical distance? Would we be better off e-mailing a friend? Making a phone call? Having a video chat? In our study, Nick Epley and I tested whether the media through which people interact affects their sense of connection and how expectations of certain technologies impact the communication media they choose to use.

In our experiment, we asked participants to reconnect with someone that they hadn’t interacted with recently, either by e-mail or over the phone. Participants first made predictions about what it would be like to get in touch if they connected in these two ways. They generally believed that they’d feel more connected when interacting over the phone than by e-mail. But they also predicted that talking on the phone could be more uncomfortable than sending an e-mail. Although these participants believed that talking encouraged stronger bonds, most of them said they’d rather send an e-mail than call the person up. It seemed that fears about awkwardness pushed individuals towards text-based methods for communicating.

In the next part of the experiment, we had participants use one randomly determined mode of communication to actually reconnect and then tracked them after they had done so. We found that people did form meaningfully stronger bonds when interacting over the phone than by e-mail. Importantly, though, there was no difference in the amount of discomfort when they were reconnecting over the phone. The next time you think about how best to connect, consider calling or having a video chat. Feelings of social connection are preferably facilitated by voice rather than a keyboard.

    B.The author states a deep-rooted tradition.

    C.The author presents official documents.

D.The author cites a published report.

【3】What can we know about the study results?

    A.They contradicted participants’ predictions partly.

    B.They had no reference value.

C.They provided insights into future studies.

    D.They confirmed researchers’ expectations.

【4】What can be concluded from the text?

A.Keeping in touch is key to a lasting friendship.

B.Think twice before you consider contacting an old friend.

C.For stronger bonds, talk instead of typing.

D.Text-based methods for communication cause discomfort.
