  • 24、   The high school entrance examination in Chongqing, or zhongkao, will be put off by a month. That is to say, students will get another month to review. However, it's still a challenge for them to face zhongkao. So we interviewed some teachers from Chongqing No.1 Secondary School about how to prepare for the exam. Let's take a look.

Mr. Yang (Chinese teacher): Learning Chinese should be a lifelong business. Although zhongkao will be put off by a month, it's not the reason for you to waste any minute. Keeping on doing the following things is the secret to raising your scores in your future exams: come back to your textbook, summarize (总结) what you have learnt and learn how to write from your reading.

Mr. Wang (math teacher): You should pay much attention to your mistakes in your exercises. Keep all the papers you did in the past and be serious about correcting your mistakes. Those are the most valuable materials for you to think about and review over and over again.

Ms. Zhu (English teacher): Make "Time" our friend and make every moment count. For example, you can make a timetable for your study. And make good use of your morning reading time to help memorize words. Memorizing words in your spare time is also a good choice. Then, do more English reading, especially the reading from the real zhongkao papers.

Mr. Liu (physics teacher) and Mr. Guo (chemistry teacher): Keep your cool and you can progress day by day. While you are organizing what you've learnt, don't forget to think about the ways to solve physics and chemistry problems. At the same time, learn to infer other things from what is known by thinking hard.

Mr. Liu (history teacher) and Mr. He (politics teacher): You should be very clear about every knowledge point. Then, try to find the difference between similar concepts (概念). Making a summary and having a deeper understanding are the basis (基础) of your progress in exam performances.

1Mr. Yang told us to do __________ things to raise our scores.

2According to Ms. Zhu, to make "time" our friend requires us to __________.

  • 25、   In my freshman year, I asked myself, “Why am I in school?” I thought I was forced to be there, but I decided just to get along with it until I could find it meaningful.

One day it finally hit me. We were studying Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in our writing class. Each of us was asked to play a part, and I jokingly volunteered to play the nurse. They all laughed, thinking that I, a boy, couldn’t play it, but I decided I was going to be the best nurse ever to appear in the writing class. On the day of the performance, I made it a success, and then I knew what school meant to me. School was then a place where I could explore unknown areas in my mind. Perhaps I hadn’t realized that before because I had never been brave enough to discover it.

To my new-found hunger for learning, I decided that I wouldn’t be shy any more. I began raising my hand higher in class discussions. In oral communication class, I chose unpopular speech topics and made them interesting. In British literature class, I chose to write a song for a creative project. Through these activities, I made classes interesting not only for me, but also for my classmates and teachers.

In short, I have discovered that learning is not something teenagers are forced to experience. Instead, learning is a way teenagers grow. What I want to tell my classmates is that I am a brave and creative actor, musician and writer, whose name each of my teachers knows by the end of their first class, and will be reinforced (增强) each day through my brave behavior.

  • 26、   Most students have experienced those school nights when they try to stay awake while doing homework. Howeveris homework the only reason why students stay up too late? For many, the answer may be factors(因素)such as electronics and technologyyet for othersthe reply focuses on the balance between schoolwork and extracurricular(课外的)activities.

Most students grow up developing some type of hobby. Whether it is playing baseball on the weekendsor joining a chess club after schooltaking part in extracurricular activities is a large part of students' daily routines.Howeveras schoolwork and pressure increase in high schoolmany studentsargue that extracurricular activities must fall by the wayside because they are not neededor not so important.High school is a time when you're supposed to explore what you love,”Samantha Luka high school studentsaid. When it comes to setting a timetablehoweverLuk said she was often under pressure to give more importance to study. This thought of giving up personal interests for study is common among many students. They find it challenging to prove whether developing the interests is advantageous.

As a cross-country runnerjournalism fan and violin loverI disagree with those who decrease the importance of after-school activities. There are many reasons why involvement in after-school activities is beneficial. The most important point is that sportsclubs and regular meetings give students time to enjoy each other's company(陪伴)and start up friendships. These activities also allow teenagers to follow their interests and to reduce stress. So in spite of (尽管)heavy schoolwork, students should keep on following their hobbies although it is very hard.

Some studentson the other handchoose the opposite way. They spend too much time on their hobbies that they are passionate(狂热的)about.Sometimes this passion helps students get recognition or prizes for their surprising talents but generally speakingit just makes one student different from the other.

Schoolwork and interests are of different valuesso one should never have to choose between study and extracurricular activitiesunless he or she wants to. Each student should try to balance themand your balance may differ from others’.Achieving this kind of balance is to find out what is important for you. It completely depends on your personal preference.

1From what Samantha Luk saidwe know that

A.she was good at setting a timetable

B.she often stayed up studying at night

C.she spent a lot of time on her hobbies

D.she put her study before her interests

    2The writer probably agrees that

A.surprising talents can help students succeed

B.after-school activities are necessary and important

C.students should choose either study or their interests

D.students need to develop hobbies different from others’

3What might be the best title for the passage?

    A.Managing Your Time Wisely

    B.Living a Relaxing School Life

    C.Developing Different Interests

    D.Discovering Your Own Balance

Liyuan Library (篱苑书屋), known as one of China's most beautiful bookstores, is located in a small hillside village near Beijing.

The project, designed by architect Li Xiaodong, was built with 40,000 wooden sticks. In the village, Li found large amounts of wooden sticks piled around each house. The villagers gather these sticks all year round to fuel their cooking stoves (炉子). Thus they decided to use this o1 material in a special way.

“This project is about the relationship of a building to the surroundings and i2 role (角色) in serving the community (社区), rather than a building as an individual object,” Li told the visitors.

In the two-and-a –half years of the operation, Liyuan Library has experienced unexpected levels of use and appreciation. A new bus s3 has opened close by for the frequent visits by thousands of people, including local villagers, tourists from the Beijing urban area, and many international visitors as well.

“Everybody is f4 to visit,” explained Li. “However, visitors are encouraged to bring two books to the library, and take one back home from the collection in order to keep the place a center of k5 exchange.”

Instead of adding a new building in the village, they chose this site in the nearby mountains, a pleasant five-minute walk from the village center. In doing so, they could p6 a place for clear thoughts when one takes the effort to head for the reading room.

Li described his practice in the following way: “We try to m7 technology, community, local materials, modern thinking and a traditional sense of identity together.”
