二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   A study showed that the experiences children have in their first few years are important . These experiences affect the development of the brain. When children receive more attention, they often have higher IQs. Babies receive information when they see, hear and feel things, which makes connections between different parts of the brain. There are a hundred trillion (万亿) connections in the brain of a three-year-old child.

Researcher Judit Gervain tested how good newborns are at distinguishing different sound patterns. Her researchers produced images of the brains of babies as they heard different sound patterns. For example, one order was mu-ba-ba. This is the pattern “A-B-B". Another order was mu-ba-ge. This is the pattern “A-B-C”. The images showed that the part of the brain responsible for speech was more active during the “A-B-B” pattern. This shows that babies can tell the difference between different patterns. They also were sensitive to where it occurred in the order.

Gervain is excited by these findings because the order of sounds is the building block of words and grammar. “Position is key to language," she says. “If something is at the beginning or at the end, it makes a big difference: ‘John caught the bear.’ is very different from ‘The bear caught John.’ ”

Researchers led by scientist Patricia Kuhl have found that language delivered by televisions, audio books, the Internet, or smartphonesno matter how educationaldoesn’t appear to be enough for children’s brain development. They carried out a study of nine-month-old American babies. They expected the first group who’d watched videos in Chinese to show the same kind of learning as the second group who were brought face-to-face with the same sounds. Instead they found a huge difference. The babies in the second group were able to distinguish between similar Chinese sounds as well as native listeners. But the other babies regardless of whether they had watched the video or listened to the audiolearned nothing.

    1What makes connections in a baby’s brain?

    A. Having a higher IQ. B. The connection with other babies.

    C. The baby’s early age. D. Experiencing new information.

2What did Judit Gervain and her team find in the experiment?

    A. Word order is relevant to meaning. B. Babies identify different sound patterns.

    C. A certain brain region processes language. D. Babies can well understand different words.

3What does the underlined sentence mean in Paragraph 3?

    A. Words have different sounds.

    B. Grammar is important in learning languages

    C. Different orders have different meanings.

    D. Different languages have different grammar.

4What is the main conclusion from the study led by Patricia Kuhl?

    A. Babies shouldn’t watch a lot of television.

    B. Social communication improves babies’ brain development.

    C. Listening to different languages helps to develop babies’ brain

    D. Foreign languages are beneficial to babies’ brain development

  • 27、   Extreme sports are any sport that involves great speed, height and danger. You need to be very fit to take part in these sports. It can be quite expensive because a lot of special equipment is needed. This type of sport is not usually a team sport like football or rugby. It is what is known as an individual sport because you are alone most of the time.

BASE JUMPING: This is the sport of using a parachute(降落伞) to jump from fixed objects like skyscrapers, high towers, bridges, domes, statues and steep, high mountains. Base jumping can be very dangerous as you compete to be the quickest to reach solid ground.

SKY DIVING: This sport also uses a parachute. Divers are taken up to a certain height in an aeroplane. They have parachutes strapped to their backs. They then jump out of the plane and freefall before opening their parachute at the correct moment. The parachute is to stop them from hitting the ground at a great speed, which would be very dangerous. The most important thing about this sport is knowing when exactly to open the parachute.

ROCK CLIMBING: This is the activity of climbing up and down very steep rock formations. This sport needs special equipment to keep the climbers safe. A climber has to have great strength of body and mind. It is better to climb in small groups, so that there is someone to help in the case of an emergency.

ICE CLIMBING: This is almost the same as rock climbing. The difference is that the climbers are climbing up and down steep walls of ice, such as frozen waterfalls. Special equipment is needed to keep climbers safe. Ice climbing is quite dangerous because ice changes as it melts or freezes. It is really difficult to know exactly how hard or how soft ice will be. Ice breaks easily so climbers need to concentrate very hard when they are climbing.

These are the sports on offer at Shanghai School of Extreme Sports. Now you have to decide which one you would like to do.

    A.it is mostly individual sports

B.it needs a lot of special equipment

C.some of them can be very dangerous

D.they need lots of professional training

3Why is base jumping dangerous sometimes?

A.You may hit the ground head-first.

B.You have to jump from a high place.

C.You must bear the weight of a parachute

D.You may reach the ground at a great speed.

4In sky diving, the most important thing is to______.

  • 28、   Africa is a very diverse land with many different tribes (部落). One tradition that many of these groups share is painting or marking their bodies and faces in color. They do this for many reasons. Some marks are used to identify people as part of a group. 1 Let’s look at some different examples of body painting.

2 Among the Masai of East Africa, when men are old enough to marry and make decisions for their people, they participate in a special ceremony in which they paint their heads and faces red. This ceremony takes place every seven to fourteen years, so there is not an exact age far participating in it. The Samburu, also from East Africa, like to paint their faces and hair red because they think it looks attractive.

3 To show that he has killed a lion, a man will paint his body with a natural white material, making special marks to represent this accomplishment. The Masai men also use this white to show that they are no longer boys and are considered adults.

One quite unusual example of face painting is done by the Wodaabe people of West Africa. Once a year, they have a beauty contest for men. 4 Then they add white and black circles and lines. Black paint is used near the eyes and on the lips to draw attention to the whiteness of their eyes and teeth, which the Wodaabe consider most beautiful. 5.

As you travel, enjoy the beautiful and bright colors of Africa.

A.The men pretend to fight each other.

B.The ceremony expresses hope for rain.

C.The men paint their faces yellow and red.

D.The women then decide which man they like best.

E.The Masai men also have a unique way of showing that they are brave.

F.Other marks are used for ceremonies such as weddings and during times of war.

G.Often representing health and long life, red is the common color in body painting.

    A Mathematician’s Apology by G. H. Hardy

This is the best book I know about the sheer beauty of mathematics. Here’s one lovely quote from the book: “A mathematician, like a painter or a poet, is a maker of patterns. If his patterns are more permanent than theirs, it is because they are made with ideas.”

    — David Brenner (TED Talk: A new weapon in the fight against superbugs)

    The Future by Nick Montfort

This is a short read but a great look at some key future thinkers throughout history. Through delightfully written case studies, Montfort makes the argument that the future can be made and not predicted. It’s a must-read for anyone interested in future studies and the role that sci-fi, speculative design and big ideas play in shaping our future relationship with technology.

    — Raphael Arar (TED Talk: How we can teach computers to make sense of our emotions)

Improv Wisdom: Don’t Prepare, Just Show Up by Patricia Ryan Madson

    — Lisa Dyson (TED Talk: A forgotten Space Age technology could change how we grow food)

If You Want to Write: A Book About Art, Independence and Spirit by Brenda Ueland

For those who know they have something to express, these stressful times can feel a bit hopeless — it may seem impossible to find the time, skill and energy to create. This is one of the most timeless books on how to regain that hope, and it’s also a delightful read, in and of itself.

When ten million passwords were leaked on to the internetthey appeared to 2that attempts by internet security experts to make us improve our password strength had been successful, even if, in the specific case of the leaked passwords, they are also completely pointless.

While many of the passwords were still single words, such as “password”there was also a clear attempt by many to make them harder to3. The problem was that people seemed to do so in the same way.

“Users are becoming slightly more 4what makes a password strong,” explained WP Engine, an internet company that performed the analysis. “For instance, adding a number or two at the end of a text phrase. That makes it better, right?”

But 5no. They found that almost half a million passwords did this and in 20 percent of those all people did was put the number “1” at the end.

Perhaps this is why some companies are now trying to move gradually beyond passwords. Yahoo! is giving users the option to 6 their mobile phone with an account, having a single use passwords texted to it each time they want to log on.

Although the serviced is voluntary, Dylan Casey an executive at Yahoo!said that it was “the first step to7passwords”. He said it was a(n)8that it was increasingly hard for people to remember all the passwords they had. “I don’t think we, as an industry, have done a good enough job of putting ourselves in the shoes of the people using our products,” he said.

It would certainly be a more sensible strategy than same people’s improving upon “password” by using “password” or“tran5p053d numb3r5 f0r 133tr3r5”.

“We are, for the most partpredictably9when it comes to choosing passwords, despite a decade of warnings from password strength checkers during sign-ups” said WP Engine. “We love taking a(n) 10, and so do password crackers.

Cell phones are used everywhere, but on the road they are a dangerous distraction (分心) to drivers and should be forbidden.

The New England Journal of Medicine reported that "drivers using a cell phone were four times more likely to have an accident than those not using a phone." The major problem is that the driver is not focused on the road, but on his or her conversation. Cell phone drivers are very unpredictable: they drive too fast or too slow, make improper turns, run red lights and even stop at green ones. It's not only annoying; it's dangerous. Accidents related to cell phones include off a road and crashing into a tree, fences, and buildings and even turning over.

In October at the California Traffic Safety Summit, experts showed that "cell phones used by drivers lead to at least 1,000 deaths per year in California." These are the same problems that occur with drunk driving, which is against the law and strictly enforced. For the same reasons, California needs laws that ban the use of cell phone in cars.

Until we take action to pass new laws, drivers at least need to be more responsible when using cell phones. The American Automobile Association recommends that drivers pull off the road before using a cell phone, have a passenger use it for them, or use voice mail to answer calls. Another suggestion is to keep the phone off while moving or simply not to use it in the car. Before using a cell phone, drivers should ask themselves, "Is this call really that important?"

Cell phones can be a very important link in emergencies, but drivers need to use them wisely. As professional NASCAR racer John Andretti says, "Driving safely is your first responsibility." The best road to safety is to just hang up and drive.

When my daughters reached the third and fourth grades, I occasionally allowed them to walk to and from school alone if the weather permitted. One warm spring day, a little dog followed them home after school. It had short legs and long lovely ears, with a fawn-colored coat. It was the cutest dog I had ever seen and the girls begged me to keep it.

The dog was barely twelve weeks old. It had no collar or identifying marks of any sort. I didn't know what to do. I thought about running an advertisement in the lost-and-found but I really didn’t want to. It would break the kids’ hearts if someone should show up. Besides, its owners should have watched it more closely.

By the end of the week the dog was part of our family. It was very intelligent and good with the girls. The following week something told me to check the lost-and-found section in the local paper. One particular advertisement jumped out at me and my heart pounded with fear at what I read. Someone was begging for the return of a lost dog in the neighborhood of our grade school. They sounded desperate. My hand shook. I couldn’t bring myself to pick up the phone.

Instead, I pretended I hadn’t seen the advertisement. I quickly put paper away in the drawer and continued with my dusting. I never said a word about it to the kids or my husband.

By now we had named the dog. It looked like a Molly, so that was what we called it. It followed the girls everywhere they went. When they went outside, it was one step behind them. When they did housework, it was there to lend a hand.

There was only one problem with this otherwise perfect picture: my conscience (良心) was bothering me. I knew in my heart I had to call that number and see if our Molly was the dog they were desperately seeking. It was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done.

    Paragraph 1:

With mixed feelings, I finally picked up the receiver and dialed.

    Paragraph 2:

One look at Molly and the woman’s face lit up like a Christmas tree.
