25、 Andrew Holleman, a 12-year-old boy, loved playing in the open land near his home. The land was wet and forested, and made a home for the birds, other animals and many different plants.
It made the perfect place for him to study and get to know the nature. He had seen some red-tailed hawks, red foxes, wood turtles and other animals. He also found special native flowers.
Suddenly it was announced that the “empty” land would be improved by a lot of houses on it. The plants would be removed, the animals would run away and most would probably die. Then the wet soil would be covered with extra grounds.
When he heard about the news, he was not happy. He was very worried that the land and water would be polluted.
Andrew wrote down clearly all the research he had done about the area, and the houses would affect the local environment. He sent letters to members of local government and television reporters. He also called on his neighbors to oppose the building of the houses
Although he was only 12 years old, he had the courage and wisdom of a person much older. Andrew’s teachers described him as gentle, shy and active. His classmates also admired how much he knew about local animals and plants, and the environment. Each day after school, Andrew went door-to-door, to ask the people to sign, who did not want the houses to be built. In only one month, he got the signatures of 250 people.
In the end, the land remained a safe place for birds, animals and plants that belonged there.
Andrew won many prizes for his brave and great work to stop the houses being built, and thus help save the environment.

27、Let us imagine how Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen’s most famous work, might be updated(更新), 200 years on. Austen’s popularity is because of her cleverness. But today she would certainly have had a very different life, as would her characters. Here’s my own suggestion.
It’s a truth finally and generally known that a woman with brains should have the same opportunities to men, however disadvantaged she may feel by sexism (性别歧视).
“My dear husband,” said Mrs. Bennet one day. “have you heard that the local store, standing empty for so long, is taken over(接管) by a bright young businesswoman?”
Her indifferent (漠不关心) husband replied that he had not. “but it is, it is,” she replied excitedly. While the husband made no reply.
“Don’t you want to know her plans?” she cried.
“Well, my dear, the rumor(谣言) is that she had already set up successful business in northern England, though how a woman can know anything about that is beyond me. She will move in herself next month.” “What is her name?” “Bingley.”
“Is she married or single?”
“What a question! And none of your business. But her coming will be a fine thing for our five boys.” “How so? How can it possibly affect(影响) them?”
“My dear love, those lazy boys need something to wake them up. There are certain to be jobs going.”
“Is that her point in settling here? Surely as a woman she has simply taken a fancy(想象的事) to the place.”
“Nonsense, my love, how little you’ve noticed the world has changed. She’s got the business qualification(许可), I’m told. She surely needs one of our boys! Perhaps you might give her a call.”
“Me? No. Perhaps you can take an interest. You still have your looks, after all. She may even offer you a job.” “Oh, that’s not possible. These new chances belong to the younger generation. But now you mention it, I think I’ll go along all the same.”
That was 10 years ago. Mrs. Bennet is now the manager of a big company.
It would remain the case, of course, that Mrs. Bennet would be one of very few women on the company board, that her salary(收入) would be still lower than other men workers.

A.had mixed feelings of admiration and surprise about Bingley
B.felt kind of worried and doubtful about Bingley
C.wanted to meet Bingley very much
D.had a great curiosity about Bingley
【4】We can infer(推断) from the passage that ________.
A.Women with brains can also be as successful as men.
