22、Recently, a study was carried out to determine who was the greatest American president.Sixty-five presidential historians took part in it, and they judged the past forty-two American leaders based on ten leadership qualities, including public persuasiveness(信服), crisis leadership, management of the economy, moral leadership, and conduct of international relations. The historians also looked at administrative ability (管理能力), relations with Congress, ability to set goals, and the pursuit of equal justice for all. Finally, the experts took into consideration the historical period in which the president lived.
The historians chose Abraham Lincoln as American’s greatest president. He had also been named best president in a similar study in 2000.Abraham Lincoln was the president who led the nation through the Civil War in the 1860s, and was able to unite it in the end.He also took the first steps to abolish slavery in America.
Edna Medford, a professor of history at Howard University in Washington, D.C., was an adviser on this study and the earlier one.She says Abraham Lincoln is seen to represent the values the nation most honors, such as truthfulness, moderation, and respect for human rights.
The historians put American’s first president, George Washington, second on the list, while Franklin D.Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt, and Harry Truman follow in that order.John F.Kennedy, the country’s first Roman Catholic president, is sixth on the list.Like Lincoln, Kennedy was murdered while in office.

23、There is a constant struggle between talent and hard work. The topic of “hard work vs talent” has been researched by many scientists and even they do not have the only right conclusion.
Ericsson, Krampe, and Tech-Romer have pointed out that talent is irrelevant in distant 1993 yet. They connected success with a deliberate practice that lasts for over 10 thousand hours. Moreover, it must be goal-oriented, intensive and thoughtful for better results.
However, recent studies support another viewpoint. Both Malcolm Gladwell(2008)and David Brooks(2011)agree that there is no guarantee that a person with a higher IQ level will be more successful in life. At the same time, talent means nothing without hard work and this thought was formulated(阐述)by Stephen King several dozen years ago.
Why is talent important?
It goes without saying that there are no equal people in the world. Even siblings(兄弟姐妹) may look absolutely the same but be different in character and preferences. That means that their inborn talents are various as well.
For example, if you gather 10 children in one classroom and teach them the same information using a single approach, the results of this studying will be very different. Not only talent will play a significant role in that but also attention, desire, and even upbringing(家庭教育). Of course, it has been confirmed that intelligence is inherited but upbringing is not less important. Some parents work with their kids from the first day of pregnancy and these children will show better results than ones left on their own.
If you wish to become best of the best like an Olympic Games champion, talent appears to be a necessity here. But if you desire to get promotion and win the competition among young colleagues, hard work and desire are your keys to success even if you are not lucky to have been born talented.
【1】What is Ericsson’s view on talent?
A.It’s harmful.
B.It’s unimportant.
C.It’s essential.
D.It’s helpful.
【2】Which one can best describe David Brooks’ idea?
A.Talent is of no use without effort.
B.Talent is useless without a desire for success.
C.People should attach more importance to effort.
D.Smart people are not necessarily more successful.
【3】What does the author want to express by mentioning parents and children?
A.Upbringing is as important as talent.
B.Talent is more significant than desire.
C.Children with a good upbringing perform better.
D.Children from the same family have different IQ levels.
【4】What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A.Talent can make a world champion.
B.Talent is the decisive factor in success.
C.Essential factors for success vary with goals.
D.Hard work is enough for promotion in the workplace.
24、Smarter ways to learn from failure
Many of us were told from an early age that, at school or in life, “you learn from your mistakes.” 【1】
The short answer is “yes” — failure can be a teachable moment. But learning from our mistakes is, in reality, very hard because we don’t like to fail. 【2】 So we react to failure in emotional ways, like giving up on a task easily, telling ourselves we don’t care whether we succeed, or finding fault with the task itself. This is self-protective, according to Hallgeir Sjastad, a professor of psychology and leadership at the Norwegian School of Economics. “Most of us want to think of ourselves as capable”, he says, “so when we fail, it causes a serious threat to our self-image”.
Fortunately, there is a research to suggest that there are some strategies to help us overcome the emotional barriers around failure. 【3】 Instead of asking “Why did I fail?”, we could ask “Why did Sam fail?”, for example. Multiple studies by psychologist Ethan Kross at the University of Michigan show that adopting a third-person perspective helps to soften our negative emotional reactions, allowing us to look at failure more objectively.
A second strategy involves offering advice to others who may be in the same position as us. 【4】 The group of adults and children were asked to give advice based on their own failures. Professors Eskreis-Winkler, Fishbach and Duckworth found that the satisfaction of helping others “forces people to connect with their experience and what they have learned”.
【5】 But it now seems that we should be saying: “fail again, fail smarter”. Failure is an unavoidable part of life, but by learning to overcome the emotional barriers around it, we may find the road to success is a little easier to find.
A.It doesn’t feel good.
B.But is this actually true?
C.Here are some reasons why we think so.
D.But how to overcome them is a question.
E.One of them is to adopt a third-person view.
F.The writer Samuel Beckett once said: “fail again, fail better.”
G.It led to better levels of motivation and academic success in the test groups.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was 11:30 a.m, and the fishing so far had been fruitless. Not another boat in sight. Andrew Sherman spotted a speck (斑点) on the horizon. As the speck approached, it started to look like a boat. “Jack,” he yelled to his son. “A boat headed straight at us!” Unbelievable. Miles of open ocean, and this boat was on course to T-bone them.
The Shermans stared at the interloper (闯入者) in surprise. Four fishing lines out, music blaring, except there wasn’t a soul in sight. The captain must have gone below, leaving his boat sailing along at 10 mph.
“Follow it, Jack,” Andrew said.
Jack hit the gas. “Hey! Hey!” the Shermans shouted. Nothing. A horrifying new thought took shape: The captain had gone below, all right—and suffered a heart attack.
Father and son switched places, and Andrew drove their boat alongside the other while Jack jumped onto the other boat’s deck, bringing the boat to a stop. Then he ventured down into the cabin. He came back up a moment later. “Empty,” he said.
“It’s a ghost boat!” said father and son nearly at the same time.
Andrew called the Coast Guard. “Man overboard,” he told them. The two men could have left it, but they were curious: What happened to the captain? The boat’s GPS system told them the missing captain had marked points along his route indicating good fishing spots. Then the points suddenly stopped a few miles back.
With Andrew driving the ghost boat and Jack driving their own craft, they headed for that last point. They were searching for what they feared would be a body.
What they didn’t know was that the ghost boat’s owner was alive in the water and growing worn out.
Two hours earlier, Sascha Scheller had been fishing when nature called. He leaned over to relieve himself, zipped up, turned back toward the helm (舵柄), and slipped.
