二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、The deep-sea oil and gas industry has vast and costly facilities to maintain. Wells, other equipment, and thousands of kilometers of pipelines must be inspected and repaired.

Now, cutting-edge underwater drones (无人机) and robots are being developed that could make the work safer and cheaper. Among them is Eelume, a six-meter-long, snake-like robot equipped with sensors and a camera at each end. It can be kept at a station at depths of up to half a kilometer for six months, without being brought back to the surface. The robot can travel up to 20 kilometers before needing to return to its station to recharge.

Maintenance work at many deep-water wells and pipeline systems is already carried out by unmanned vehicles. But these vehicles typically need to be transported to the offshore site on a fully crewed ship and then remotely operated from onboard the surface ship. That can cost up to $100,000 per day, according to Pål Liljebäck, chief technology officer with Eelume Subsea Intervention, which developed the robot. Liljebäck says that by “enabling the robot to become a subsea resident living at a station, it can be mobilized at any time to do inspections, thereby reducing the need for costly surface ships”.

Eelume can work autonomously on tasks assigned from a control room onshore, and send back video and data. Its snake-like design allows it to work in small spaces and wriggle (扭动) its body to stay in place in strong currents. By staying under the sea, it can carry out tasks whatever the conditions on the surface of the ocean.

The global underwater robotics market is expected to be worth around $7 billion in 2025, according to analysts, and other companies are in the process of commercializing new deep-sea drone and robot technology. Eelume Subsea Intervention will carry out final testing on the seabed later this year at the Åsgard oil and gas field. It expects to put its first snake robots into use next year and hopes to have up to 50 in oceans around the world by 2027.

【1】What is one feature of Eelume?

A.It can travel nearly 40 kilometers before recharging.

B.It can dive as deep as 500 meters.

C.It works mainly around the station.

D.It works for 6 months on one charge.

【2】What is the problem with unmanned vehicles?

A.They are too costly to maintain.

B.They are hard to operate remotely.

C.They require transportation to and from work.

D.They have to work on a fully crewed ship all the time.

【3】What can be expected of Eelume in the future?

A.It will require no further tests.

B.It will be worth around $ 7 billion.

C.It will be put on the market in 2027.

D.It will face a lot of competitors.

【4】What is the main idea of the passage?

A.A snake robot is on its way for underwater tasks.

B.Eelume is the new choice for constructing pipelines.

C.Maintenance work on the ocean floor is a risky job.

D.Unmanned vehicles marketing has seen strong growth.

  • 22、Homework and stress are rarely reduced inside the classroom.Meanwhile, outside the classroom, the pressure is on to find scholarships for college.

According to Braintrack,a higher education database with worldwide reach, more than 3 billion US dollars (18 billion yuan) in private scholarships are awarded to college students annually.Average awards range from $2,000 to $3,000.

The scholarship application process is similar to the college application process: forms to be completed, test scores and transcripts to be sent, essays to be written and often interviews to be prepared for.

A few great places to start looking for scholarships are: www.fastweb.com,www.finaid.org and www.collegexpress.com.Check out the annual scholarship guidebooks Scholarships,Grants & Prizes by Peterson’s and the Ultimate Scholarship Book: Billions of Dollars in Scholarships,Grants and Prizes by Gen Tanabe and Kelly Tanabe.

Be selective.Thoroughly research the qualifications required by each of the scholarships.Don’t waste your time applying for those that are need based if you can’t produce the appropriate documents.

Research past recipients (接受者).Check out the websites of the organizations sponsoring the scholarships. Many post the biographies of past recipients. You don’t need to have cured cancer, but if you don’t think your résumé (履历) measures up to the past winners’,you might be better served by moving onto the next scholarship on your list.Prepare for the interview.

You’ll want to dazzle them with your personality, but above all you’ll want to be prepared.Find someone you trust to conduct a similar interview with you someone who will be honest with you and provide valuable suggestions.

Let your personality shine through in your essays. The essays are the best way for students to share who they are, where they’ve come from, what they’ve overcome and so on.Tell your story in an interesting and persuasive  way.And if you do have an interview, send a thank you note afterward.

  • 23、Making the announcement, Peter Englund, permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, called Alice Munro a “master of the contemporary short story”.

“She has taken an art form, the short story, which has tended to live a little bit in the shadow of the novel, and she has cultivated it almost to perfection,” he said.

The 82-year-old, whose books include Dear Life and dance of the Happy Shades, is only the 13thwoman to win the Nobel Prize for literature since its start in 1901.

“I knew I was in the running, yes, but I never thought I would win,” Munro told Canadian media.

Alice Munro: “I would really hope that this would make people see the short story as an important art form.”

Munro, who began writing in her teenage years, published her first story, The Dimensions of a Shadow, in 1950.

Dance of the Happy Shades, published in 1968, was Munro’s first collection, and it went on to win Canada’s highest literary prize, the Governor General’s Award.

In 2009, she won the Man Booker International Prize for her entire body of work — but she downplayed her achievements.

“I think maybe I was successful in doing this because I didn’t have any other talents,” she once said in an interview.

BBC Arts Editor Will Gompertz said Munro had been “at the very top of her game since she started”.

“Very few writers are her equal,” he said, adding “She gets to the heart of what it is to be human”.

The award “probably won’t make a commercial difference” to the author, he added, but it “makes a huge difference to how her work will be viewed in historical terms”.

“If she hadn’t won it before she died, I think it would have been a terrible, terrible omission (遗漏).”

Often compared to Anton Chekhov, she is known for writing about the human spirit and a regular theme of her work is the dilemma faced by young girls growing up and coming to terms with living in a small town.

Several of her stories have also been adapted for the screen, including The Bear Came over the Mountain.

  • 24、A beer bottle thrown from the stands landed near Usain Bolt in the moments before the 100-meter final Sunday night in London.

As Bolt and seven other competitors ducked into their starting crouches, a bottle sailed from the first row of the stands at Olympic Stadium.

It harmlessly bounced in the lane belonging to Yohan Blake and didn’t appear to cause a distraction(分心) to the runners, who started a moment later. The thrower’s lack of distance was a blessing. Had he gathered tips from the competitors of the hammer throw(链球) competition, which was taking place in the infield at the same time as the 100 final, the bottle could have hit one of the competitors. It ended up landing a few feet from Blake (lane5).

Edith Bosch, a female Dutch judoka who won a bronze medal earlier during the Olympics, claimed that the man who threw the bottle was sitting near her and that she “beat” him. Whether that’s true or the hyperbole (夸张的语句) of an aggravated athlete was unclear in the minutes after the incident. Pictures show a group of Dutch athletes sitting behind the starting area.

Police took the man into custody(监护). He will appear in court on Monday morning.

Neither Bolt nor Blake said they knew of the incident until they were informed by reporters. “I don’t know who would have done that,” Bolt said.

Gatlin was aware of it but implied it was only a slight distraction. “I didn’t know what it was,” he said, according to the BBC, “but when you’re in those blocks, the whole stadium is so quiet that you can hear a pin drop.”

【1】How many exact athletes are mentioned in the text?

    A. Two   B. Four   C. Seven D. Eleven

【2】What is the text mainly about?

    A. Usain Bolt along with seven other competitors

    B. A female Dutch judoka sitting behind the starting area.

    C. The lane belonging to Yohan Blake before 100 final.

    D. A beer bottle thrown at Usain Bolt before 100 final.

【3】What’s the writer’s attitude towards the athletes for the 100-meter final?

    A. Critical   B. Doubtful

    C. Disapproving D. Positive
