25、When animals and plants use color to be noticed, it is called advertising coloration (着色). Advertising coloration can be used to either warn or attract animals.
The bright colors of flowers and berries are advertising coloration that attract animals. Flowers need to be pollinated (授粉) to reproduce. Bees and hummingbirds are attracted to bright colors and will pollinate the flowers. Some pollinated plants will produce berries. These berries will turn a bright color when they are ripe. The bright color lets berry-eating birds know the fruit is sweet and safe to eat. After birds eat the berries, the seeds will pass through their digestive system and be left behind. Some of the seeds left behind will grow into new plants!
Color is also used to attract mates (配偶). Many male birds like the northern cardinal are brightly colored to attract females. Bright feathers can be a sign of how healthy the bird is! Female birds are naturally attracted to healthier males because their offspring will be healthier. And they can raise little ones more easily. Female birds are often less colorful. This helps hide them when they are nesting.
Advertising coloration is also used to warn animals away. The ladybug has bright orange wings with black spots. Its coloring warns meat-eating animals that the ladybug tastes awful. The striped skunk (带条纹的臭鼬) has white stripes that are a warning to meat-eating animals that they may be in for an unpleasant surprise if they try to attack.
Some animals, like the red-eyed tree frog, may scare enemies away with their color. Red-eyed tree frogs sleep during the day. If a meat-eating animal comes up to them and they open their eyes, the bright red color of their eyes might shock the animal long enough to give the red-eyed tree frog time to hop away to safety.

Some people have a very poor sense of direction. Unluckily,I am one of them. I have visited a place many times but I may still get lost there the next time.
When I was a little girl,I never dared to ask strangers the way. And so I used to walk round in circles and hope that by chance I would get to the place I was going to.
Now,I am no longer too shy to ask people for directions, but I often receive helpless or even wrong information. So I try to avoid giving people wrong directions. If anyone ever asks me the way somewhere,I would say, "Sorry, I am a stranger here."
Once on my way to work I was stopped by a man. He asked me if I could tell him the way to the Friendship Building. I gave him my usual reply. But just as I walked on only a few steps, I realized that he had asked the way to my office building. However, I had no time to turn back and look for him. I was rushing to meet with someone at my office and I didn't want to keep him waiting.
When I just got to my office, the secretary showed in the man who had asked me for directions. Imagine how embarrassed I was and how surprised he was when we saw each other at the first sight!

27、 In an inspiring(鼓舞人心的)follow-up to the Titanic story, Reader's Digest national affairs editor David tells of a family treasure that survived the fatal tragedy(灾难性的悲剧)on April 15, 1912.
My great uncle Denis boarded the Titanic as a third-class passenger at Queenstown, Ireland. He was 21, a jockey from County Cork who was offered a job riding horses for an American family. His older brother Michael, my grandfather, who had made his own trip across the Atlantic a few years earlier, was waiting for him in New York. In one version(版本)of the story- different family members recall hearing different details over the years-Michael sent Denis a proper overcoat so he wouldn’t look too poor when he came through Ellis Island. That may or may not be true. What we know for sure is that Denis didn’t make it, .
As the ship was sinking(下沉), Denis, who is sometimes listed as Thomas in Titanic passenger records, wrote a note to Michael. He gave the note and his overcoat to a woman in a lifeboat and asked her to see that his brother got them. She did. A photo of my grandfather wearing what we have always called “the Titanic coat” holds a special place in the family archives(档案室). In the picture, he looks small but well-dressed with several servants around him.
No one knows what the note said —that part of the story got lost over the past hundred years—and I often wonder what few words Denis chose that night. I also wonder what he was thinking later, as he stood on that deck(甲板)with the coat and faced the end of his too short life in that cold ocean calmly and bravely, under those cold stars.
