二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   According to a 2010 study by Princeton researchers Daniel Kahneman and Angus Deaton, people tend to feel happier when they make more money, up until a point, which was estimated to be about 75,000 a year per person. And people’s emotional well-being, or how they felt on a daily basis, didn't improve as they made over 75,000 but their life satisfaction, or how happy they were with their life overall, did.

But more recently, a 2018 study from Purdue University used much wider data from the Gallup World Poll and found that the perfect income point for individuals is 95,000 for life satisfaction and 60,000 to 75,000 for emotional well-being. When people earned more than 105,000 their happiness levels decreased.

More money doesn't make us happier but making “more relative to other people” does, according to Yale psychology professor Laurie Santos. “Even the richest folks out there in the world can often look around and find somebody that's just a bit richer, and therefore their money isn't making them as happy as they think,” she says. Studies also suggest that when we feel like we can't maintain the same standard of living as our peers, it makes us unhappy. Simply getting more money doesn't make us happier because of the “hedonic adaptation”. “Over time, we get used to that change in our life and our expectations change and our lifestyle changes—we adapt” says Sonja Lyubomirsky, a professor of psychology. Plus “Every time we experience a rise in income, our expectations rise a little bit.”

Research consistently shows that if you want to be happier in your job, you shouldn't desire a high salary. From a happiness standpoint, it's more important that your job provides a sense of meaning or purpose, “You should focus on whether the job is meeting your own strengths,” Santos says. “These are your own values, the ones you want to experience in the world.”

【1】What does the study from Purdue University show?

A.Your happiness depends on your income.

B.As for happiness, being “rich” is perfect.

C.There is a sort of perfect “happiness” salary.

D.There are many things more important than money.

【2】Which of the following is Laurie Santos’ opinion?

A.The richer people are usually happier.

B.“Hedonic adaptation” needs to be studied.

C.The standard of living depends on well-being.

D.Happiness is affected by making comparisons.

【3】Why does a high-paying job fail to raise our happiness level?

    A.Our working conditions keep changing.

B.Our demands for life quality keep changing.

C.Our satisfaction with the job keeps changing.

D.Our understanding of happiness keeps changing.

【4】What plays a vital role in helping you find happiness in your job?

    A.Your realization of self-worth.

    B.Your colleagues’ attitude towards you.

    C.Your relationship with your employers.

D.Your satisfaction with your salary level.

  • 27、In 1996 John Jones made an unusual discovery. He had just enlarged (扩大) a piece of paper money for a friend—a Confederate bank note, money issued (发行) by banks in Southern States of America during the Civil War. When he was face to face with the picture, he couldn’t believe his eyes: slaves (奴隶) happily picking cotton in their master’s fields.

Jones grew up in South Carolina. He had heard painful stories of slavery from his greatgrandmother. The picture on the money did not match (匹配) the history of African American slaves that he’d heard all his life. “I had never seen that type of picture on money before,” he said.

Jones wondered why slaves looked so happy. He started doing research.

Searching for and finding the answers to his questions changed his life. During two years’ search, Jones found more than 120 different bills. He discovered that the bills had several things in common. They showed slaves working in jobs related to farming. Many of them showed healthy and smiling slaves at work. None of the bills showed the hardships of slavery.

Jones wanted to share what he had learned. “I wanted other people to see what I had seen,” he said. He decided to make large paintings of the pictures on the money. After three years of work, Jones had painted more than 80 slavery scenes (场景).He paired each painting with the money on which the picture appeared. “The Color of Money”—an exhibit (展览) of his work—has toured the country.

Jones' paintings tell an important story about the South 150 years ago. He likes to repeat the saying. “The story is on the money.” In this case, the saying happens to be true.

1How did Jones feel when he saw the picture on the money?

    A. Angry.   B. Painful.

    C. Excited.   D. Surprised.

2Why did Jones do research on the money?

    A. He had never heard of Confederate money.

    B. He wanted to learn about American history through it.

    C. It showed slaves quite different from those in his mind.

    D. His great-grandmother told him some unusual stories about it.

    3What did Jones find?

    A. About 120 different bills were issued during the Civil War.

    B. The difficulty of slaves was never shown on the bills.

    C. Slaves lived a harder life than he thought.

    D. Slaves worked long hours on farms.

4What’s the best title for the text?

    A. Confederate Money.   B. Money Tells a Story.

    C. African American Slaves.   D. John Jones Changes America.

  • 28、China is facing a reading crisis, with more than 50% of people surveyed believing they don't spend enough time reading and only 20% satisfied with their reading time, China Daily said.

According to Xu Shengguo, head of the Chinese Academy of Press and Publication, the country's reading rate last year was 78.6%, which means that percentage of people read books, periodicals or newspapers or were involved in online reading, while 21.4% read nothing at all.

The Academy launched an annual survey on the reading quantity of Chinese people in 2005 and found that each read 4.5 to 4.7 books on average per year between 2005 and 2014. Last year, Chinese people read only 4.56 books, compared with 12 in France, 11 in South Korea, 9 in Japan and about 7 in the United States. In addition, more tha 40% of Chinese people read less than one book throughout the year outside of textbooks.

A training meeting on reading supported by Beijing Municipal Bureau of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television was held in Beijing last week. It was the first meeting for the Leading Reader project, a training series for teachers, officials, college students and bookstore owners to promote nationwide reading. It will be held on weekends during September and October.

In addition to factors such as the large population base in China and imbalance of regional economic development, the shortage of public libraries is widespread. Reading parties in the community are in need of greater promotion. If we want to promote the nationwide reading rate, we have to encourage more grassroots reading programs.

1What is the reading rate of China last year?

    A. 20%.   B. 21.4%

    C. 40%.   D. 78.6%.

2What's the training meeting held on weekends for?

    A. For promoting nationwide reading.

    B. For supporting the Beijing Municipal Bureau.

    C. For training teachers and middle school students.

    D. For advertising related books, films and Televisions.

3Which is NOT the factor of the reading crisis?

    A. China has a large population base.

    B. Most Chinese people no longer like reading.

    C. Some regions have no enough public libraries.

    D. There is an imbalance in regional development.

4What does the author want to tell us?

    A. More Chinese like reading now.

    B. China faces a reading crisis at present.

    C. China has to promote the reading rate.

    D. More grassroots should be encouraged to read.

  • 29、   When it comes to romance, no one does it better than the French. This is believed to be true of their movies, too. Unlike the Hollywood blockbusters (大片) you may be used to, French films are "usually a more artistic statement about being in the world" , noted The Guardian.

From Oct 8 to Oct 29, in cooperation with the French embassy in China, the China Film Archive and China National Film Museum are presenting classic and critically acclaimed (备受赞誉的) French movies, including Le Havre (2011), Mia et le Migou (2008), and Le Voyage dans la Lune (1902).

Sha Dan, curator (策划人) of the China Film Archive, explained to the media what to expect from the film series, and revealed how first- -time viewers can best appreciate French movies.

Q: Why should I watch French movies?

A: French films have a lot of virtues. For one thing, they use dialogue and plot, instead of visual effects, to drive the story. For another, they stress diversity (多元). While Hollywood movies are often about universal values, French movies have French culture or regional cultures deeply rooted in them. You have to understand them in their cultural context. That' s what sometimes makes French movies difficult to understand.

Q: How can a Chinese audience appreciate French movies?

A: You need to get used to their way of filming. When shooting two people talking to each other, the traditional way is to film each person face-forward as they take turns speaking. However, French movies are filmed in more experimental ways, like switching from a close shot to a long shot.

Also, you should search for background information. The movie' s title and its director can reflect its ideas and storyline. For example, Les Enfants du Paradis (1945), also known as Children of Paradise, tells the story of beautiful Garance and the four men who love her in their own ways. Garance meets these men in a theater, and the "Paradis" in the movie title is an informal French name for a theater' s gallery.

1What is the author' s purpose in writing this text?

A.To recommend some classic French movies.

B.To help readers to better appreciate French movies.

C.To compare French movies with Hollywood blockbusters.

D.To describe the development and features of French movies in great detail.

2Which of the following is a characteristic of French movies?

A.They are often about universal values.

B.They usually have really good visual effects.

C.They attach a lot of importance to French culture and French regional cultures.

D.They are sometimes hard to understand because of their complex plots.

3Which of the following is TRUE about French movies according to the text?

A.They are mostly romances and are usually artistic.

B.They often involve more close shots than long shots.

C.They prefer to use the traditional way of shooting two people talking to each other.

D.Their titles and directors can help viewers learn background information.
