26、Samuel Morse was born in Massachusetts USA. He started off his career as an inventor after being a painter and sculptor (雕塑家). He even earned a gold medal from the famous Adelphi Society of Arts for his first effort in sculpture, the “Dying Hercules”. He became the first president of the National Academy of Design, and was made Professor of the Arts of Design in the University of the City of New York.
Yet, this painter turned to inventing to make his fortune during a sea voyage. On this journey, Samuel Morse heard about many attempts to create usable telegraphs. He was fascinated by this problem and began to study books on physics for two years to gain more scientific knowledge. He realized that pulses (脉冲) of electrical current could carry information over wires.
Thus the world’s first working model of a telegraph was born. His signaling device was quite simple. It consisted of a transmitter (containing a battery and a key), a small buzzer (蜂鸣器) as a receiver and a pair of wires connecting the two. Samuel Morse improved it by adding a switch and a second buzzer to allow transmission (传播) in the opposite direction as well.
On May 24, 1844 Samuel Morse sent the first electronic message between Baltimore and Washington, “Look what God has enabled us to build, and benefit by.”
Seventeen years later, the two coasts of the United States were linked by telegraph. The telegraph continued to enjoy the position of being the fastest and most reliable means of communication for almost 140 years since its invention.

27、One day King Solomon was sitting on his throne (宝座、御座) and his guards were standing around him. Suddenly the door was opened and the Queen of Sheba came in. “King,” she said, “in my own country I have heard much about your power and glory, but much more about your wisdom. Men have told me that there is no puzzle that you can not solve. I have here a puzzle which I think will test your wisdom. I would like to show you.”
Then she held up in each hand beautiful wreath(花环) of flowers. The wreaths were so nearly alike that none could point out any difference. “One of these wreaths,” said the Queen, “is made of flowers picked from your garden. The other is made of artificial(人工的) flowers, shaped and colored by a skillful artist. Now, tell me, which one is true, and which one is false?” The king was puzzled. He moved uneasily on his golden throne. His ministers and guards shook their heads.
Suddenly the king remembered that close by his window there was a climbing vine(藤) filled with beautiful sweet flowers. He had seen many bees flying among these flowers and gathering honey from them. He asked one of his ministers to open the window.
It was opened. The queen was standing quite near to it with the two wreaths still in her hands. The next moment two bees flew eagerly in. Then came one after another. All flew to the flowers in the queen’s right hand. Not one of the bees so much as looked at those in her left hand. “Queen of Sheba, the bees have given you my answer,” said King Solomon.

28、Among rich countries, people in the United States work the longest hours. They work much longer than in Europe. This difference is quite surprising because productivity per hour worked is the same in the United States as it is in France, Spain and Germany, and it is growing at a similar speed.
In most countries and at most times in history, as people have become richer they have chosen to work less. In other words they have decided to “spend” a part of their extra income on a fuller personal life. Over the last fifty years Europeans have continued this pattern, and hours of work have fallen sharply. But not in the United States. We do not fully know why this is. One reason may be greatly lower taxes in America, which increase the rewards to work. Another may be more satisfying work, or less satisfying personal lives.
Longer hours do of course increase the GDP (国内生产总值). So the United States has produced more per worker than, say, France. The United States also has more of its people at work, while in France many more mothers and older workers have decided to stay at home. The overall result is that American GDP per head is 40% higher than in France, even though productivity per hour worked is the same.
It is not clear which of the two situations is better. As we have seen, work has to be compared with other values like family life, which often get lost in interest. It is too early to explain the different trends(趋势)in happiness over time in different countries. But it is a disappointing idea that in the United States happiness has made no progress since 1975, while it has risen in Europe. Could this have anything to do with trends in the work-life balance?
【1】From the text we know that the author___________.

C.says nothing certain about which pattern is better
D.thinks neither of the patterns is good

B.situations
C.other values
D.trends
【4】What message can we get from the text?
A.The GDP of Europe is higher than that of America.
B.Two possible reasons are given for working longer hours in the US.
C.People all over the world choose to work less when they are richer.
D.Americans are happier than Europeans.
【5】Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A.Americans and Europeans
B.Staying at Home
C.Work and Productivity
D.Work and Happiness

The most important 【3】(贡献) was from the Normans, a 【4】 (French speak) people who【5】 (打败) England and took control of the country in 1066. 【6】, the Norman Conquest did not affect English as much as the Angles and the Saxons’ victory about 600 years earlier, which led to Old English 【7】 (replace) Celtic. Even though the Normans spoke French for the e【8】 250 years they ruled England, French did not replace English 【9】 the first language. On the other hand, the English language did borrow many words from French. This resulted in even more words with similar meanings, such as answer (from Old English) and reply (from Old French). It is interesting to learn 【10】 the words for animals and meat developed.
