26、 Three-quarters of a million tourists flock to the white beaches every year, but this booming industry has come at a price. Poisonous smoke rising from open fires, rubbish made up of plastic bottles, packets…”,it’s a far cry from the white sands, clear waters and palm trees that we associate with the Maldives(马尔代夫),the paradise island holiday destination set in the Indian Ocean.
Of its 200 inhabited islands, which are spread across an area of 35,000 square miles,99 are good resorts (旅游胜地).So many tourists come every year, more than double the local population. Of these, over 1 00,000 travel from the UK. The capital,Male,is four times more densely populated than London. Given these facts, it’s hardly surprising that the Maldives has a waste disposal problem.
Years ago, when the tourists left, the government had to deal with a stream of rubbish. Their solution was to turn one of the islands into a dumping ground. Four miles west of Male is the country’s dumping ground, Thilafushi. What you are seeing here is a view of the Maldives on which no honeymooners would like to clap eyes. Each visitor produces 3.5 kg of waste per day. The country dumps more than 330 tons of rubbish on the island every day.
Now, since many waste boats, tired of waiting seven hours or more, directly offload then goods into the sea, the government of the Maldives has banned the dumping of waste on the k land. So,the waste boats ship the rubbish to India instead.

D.Waste on islands will be offloaded directly into the sea.
【4】What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To attract more tourists to the Maldives.
B.To state the waste disposal problem in the Maldives

27、 Our planet is covered in water. Just 2.5 percent of that water, however, is fresh. Of that, only about one third is liquid. The rest is locked up as ice. Yet we depend on the fresh water available for everything.
As climate changes, though, water available changes too. Water, climate and weather are connected in the water cycle. Scientists use supercomputers to explore the complex ways that climate change is changing the water cycle. They have found that as climate warms, the atmosphere holds more water: about 4 percent more for every 1.8 degrees Celsius. From 2002 to 2017, a satellite mission called Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment called GRCE tracked Earth's water resources from above. A pair of twin satellites was able to "weigh" earth's water by measuring how much the planet pulls it. If the amount of surface water or even groundwater changes, so does the pull of gravity at that location. That gravitational pull is affected by changes in mass (质量). As the first satellite passed over an area, differences in gravity slightly changed the distance between the two satellites. Scientists translate those data into water or ice mass. Then they compare them with historical data to measure changes in places where water and ice are distributed over time.
Data from computers and satellites agree. That is, climate change is changing the availability of water around the world. In South Africa and many regions, droughts are becoming more common. In other areas, such as California and Europe, changing rainfall patterns lead to river flows peaking earlier in the year, followed by water shortages. Meanwhile, the average rainfall in the United States has actually increased by 5 centimeters (2 inches) since 1895.
【1】How does climate warming affect water recycle?
A.More water goes into the atmosphere.
B.More ice melts into liquid.
C.More water spreads on the surface of the earth.
D.It's harder to get underground water.
【2】What happens if the amount of surface water changes?
A.Underground water changes too.
B.Gravitational pull at the same place changes too.
C.Changes in mass of water happens.
D.The planet pulls the water harder.
【3】What conclusion can scientists draw from their research?
A.The water cycle is hard to break.
B.Earth's total water remains the same.
C.Climate change can't change the water cycle.
D.Climate change alters the distribution of water resources.
【4】What's the passage mainly about?
A.The availability of fresh water on the earth.
B.The causes of climate warming.
C.The effect of climate warming on water cycle.
D.The use of modern technology to study climate change.
28、 It is every climber’s dream to reach the summit of Mt Qomolangma. At 29,017 ft, the peak is undoubtedly the highest spot on earth. But the trek to the summit is anything but a walk in the park.
Ever since the summit was climbed by Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay in 1953, eager climbers try to make the pilgrimage(朝圣之旅) to the top of the mountain every year. The last few weeks of May is the perfect time when the severe weather conditions usually open up for a brief period of time.
On one such day in May, there was a strange traffic jam of mountaineers as they navigated the “death zone” —the deadliest trail to the summit. The severe overcrowding resulted in mishaps and loss of lives.
Mountain climbing, which was once a sport for the fittest, has been crowded out by a wave of adventure tourism. Now, numerous climbers make a beeline for the top of Mt Qomolangma, led by commercial companies. Better equipment and clothing has made it appear all very easy.
However, Qomolangma is a tough mountain. With just a single icy path to the summit and only a few days of clear weather to climb, the dangers of not moving quickly can be fatal. Today, many buy a spot to the top if they have the means to pay for it, but they are ill-prepared or unfit. These tourists push themselves beyond their capacity in the thrill of achievement, risking not just their own lives but that of others following behind.
More than 200 lives have been taken by the slopes so far. Eleven climbers have died this year alone. The last stretch to the peak is a narrow path used by both people sending and descending the summit. With oxygen level at just 30% of what it is at sea level, the human body can shut down from exhaustion very quickly. Climbers have said that the mad rush to the summit makes people uncaring to the troubles of others who are struggling.
【1】What does the underlined word ‘mishaps’ mean?
A.Accidents. B.Crashes. C.Arguments. D.Attacks.
【2】What does the fourth paragraph imply?
A.Mountain climbing is a game for rich people.
B.Mountain climbing is becoming a business.
C.Brave climbers risk their life to conquer Qomolangma.
D.Advanced equipment ensures tourists’ safety.
【3】What is the best title for the text?
A.A craze for mountain climbing B.A deadly zone to Mt Qomolangma
C.An accident on Mt Qomolangma D.A traffic jam on Mt Qomolangma
29、 My dad was one who never knew a stranger. He was a farmer in the Midwest and he spent his winters selling insurance and commodities (商品). Daddy could really talk up anyone and his favorite thing to do was find out their income. Once we were at Chicago O’Hare Airport. Daddy was sitting with me as I waited for my flight to Fort Lauderdale. A Russian guy sat down next to my daddy. The gentleman could not speak a word of English but that did not stop my dad. He found out his business, asking how many children he had and of course how much he made.
I used to be somewhat embarrassed by this. In the last year of my daddy’s life, I was home visiting with my husband and I was in the car with my mom. She told me a story about how she was in the doctors’ office with my daddy and how he was his usual self-talking away to the others in the waiting room. My mom was very private, so I imagine she was bothered by this as well. She said he started talking to a young man in a wheelchair who could not talk and could not move his arms or head. But my daddy kept asking the young man questions, getting him to smile in response. And he carried on like that with the disabled man till he was called back to the doctors’ office.
When the young man and his father got up to see the doctor, the father of the young man came over and shook my dad’s hand and said. “Thank you for speaking to my son. Most people just turn away when they see him.” My father ended up dying later that month, a big surprise—a sudden heart attack. Fortunately, all nine of his children had been home that summer to visit. I told this story about his love of talking at the funeral.
【1】Why did the author think her dad talked to the Russian guy?
A.To practice his Russian.
B.To teach him some English.
C.To drive away his loneliness

【2】What does the underlined word “private” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Not connected with work or official position.
B.Not for people in general or for others to know about.
C.Working for oneself rather than for the state or for a group.
D.Not wanting to share thoughts and feelings with other people.
【3】What did the author think of her dad’s love of talking in the end?
A.It was a shame.
B.It was a disadvantage.
C.It was a virtue.
D.It was a funny thing.
【4】What can be the best title for the text?
