二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、What will our world be like in 2050?

There are two features in the growth of world population. First, the annual increase in population in 15 European countries, in the past few years, has been only 300,000. The United Nations estimates (估计)that by 2050, the population of European countries will decrease from the current 0.72 billion to 0.63 billion. Second, the population in developing countries is growing rapidly. By 2050,the population of Africa is expected to reach 1.8 billion, 0.9 billion more than its current population.

A recent research report published by the United Nations indicates that it is quite possible that the Earth's temperature is rising well above the previous estimate. The Antarctic ice sheet, which contains 90% of the world's ice, has lost significant mass in the past few years. The discovery comes as a surprise to scientists, who thought that the continent would gain ice this century because of increased snowfall in a warming climate. A research team from the University of Colorado used satellite data to estimate that the ice sheet will lose up to 48 cubic miles by 2050.

Africa's rivers face great change that will leave a quarter of the continent severely short of water by the middle of the century, according to a global warming study published today. Even modest decreases in rain in western Africa will see rivers lose as much as 80% of their water and a rise of what the scientists call "water refuges(难民)”. "In those areas where there is already a water shortage, it's going to have a destructive effect," the study says,.“If you're already walking 5 km to the nearest stream, by 2050,it's going to mean walking 30 km or moving your whole household closer to the water source."

【1】Which of the following situations in 2050 is NOT mentioned in the text?

    A.Population change.

    B.Economic decline.

    C.Global warming.

    D.Water shortage.

【2】What surprises the scientists according to Paragraph 3?

A.The Antarctic ice sheet has decreased.

B.The Earth's temperature is going down.

C.Global warming is destroying the Earth.

D.Snowfall increases in the Antarctic area.

【3】What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph stress (强调) ?

A.The ill fate of Africa's rivers.

    B.The importance of doing exercise.

C.The hard life of the African refugees.

D.The seriousness of the water problem.

【4】What was the most possible feeling of the author when he wrote this text?

    A.Happy.

    B.Angry.

    C.Worried.

    D.Calm.

  • 27、   A survey has shown that what you do on a plane can be determined by which nationality is listed on your passport. According to the results of an international passenger survey, Australians are the biggest drinkers on board with 36 percent choosing to down the hatch, compared to 35 percent of Americans and 33 percent of Brits.

The Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX) spoke to around 1,500 people aged 18 and older, who have traveled by plane at least once during the last three months and were living in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, China Singapore, Australia and Brazil.

The results found Chinese travelers are most likely to nod off once the seat-belt sign switches off. They are also the first to take out their credit card for some in-flight shopping and the biggest fans of gaming. Americans on the other hand like to use their time in the air more productively—when not drinking—choosing to work while flying at 35,000 feet.

Meanwhile, Brits and Germans are the best at making a chat with random strangers—spending 50 percent more time than any other nationality. Comparatively, Brazilians conduct their conversations online via email, messaging apps or social media.

Despite plane food having a bad reputation, seven out of ten interviewees said they were happy to eat up on the selection of in-flight snacks and meals. In-flight magazines were also popular with four out of five passengers.

The international flyers, who travelled on eight major airlines, did however express their desire for better in-flight entertainment. 'The industry has greatly improved the comfort, entertainment and onboard service, and passengers are accepting those improvements' said Russell Lemieux, APEX executive director. 'At the same time, passengers are demanding more from their air travel experiences which will drive more improvements touching all aspects of the journey.' he added.

1What can you probably see in the flight according to the passage?

A.Brazilians choose to drink. B.Americans do in-flight shopping.

C.Germans chat to kill the time. D.The Chinese switch off the seat-belt sign.

2When on board the plane, ________.

A.most passengers like to read in-flight magazines

B.passengers from one nation have little in common

C.more than half of the passengers don’t enjoy plane food

D.most people tend to have a good sleep during in-flight time

3What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A.Flyers care not a little about entertainment.

B.Flyers are expecting better flight experiences.

C.Flyers are not satisfied with the improvements.

D.Flyers have more and more demands from airlines.

4What's the purpose of the passage?

A.To entertain readers with interesting stories.

B.To criticize impolite behaviors on the plane.

C.To encourage people to take flight if possible.

D.To inform readers about the results of a survey.

  • 28、Move towards nature when feeling down. Miracles do happen if you try. According to studies, walking among trees makes us relaxed. 【1】 There’s plenty of research showing the link between being in nature and being happy, but most of the research has focused on adults.

【2】 Explaining the motivation behind the study, researchers note that with environmental issues such as global warming, more studies are focusing on the relationships between humans and nature to find solutions to these problems, and the future of the planet lies in the hands of children and their actions. However, few studies focus on this aspect.

For the study, researchers worked with 206 children between the ages of 5 and 15. To measure how connected they were to nature, the kids were asked how much they enjoy activities like seeing wildflowers and wild animals, hearing sounds of nature and touching animals and plants. 【3】 They also found that the more concerned children were about the environment and nature, the more likely they were to be happy.

So, exposure to nature is related to active behaviors and happiness of children. What does that mean to adults? As we all know, children usually tend to follow adults’, especially their parents’ behaviors. That’s to say, when adults are outside and appreciate nature, kids learn by example. 【4】

Researchers say that children need role models who can gently guide them to nature with excitement and an attitude of a lifelong learner. 【5】 What’s more important is that they spend time together with children by exploring a fun and safe environment.

A.It’s so adventurous going for a walk around trees.

B.Researchers will study more about the connection between children’s performance and nature.

C.And if parents enjoy being close to nature, so will their children.

D.Parents don’t have to be experts in environmental science or nature studies.

E.They found that the kids connected to nature were more likely to behave properly.

F.In a new study, researchers wanted to see if kids get the same benefits from being outdoors.

G.Even just smelling the trees helps reduce anxiety.

  • 29、   At one point in time, IQ was viewed as the decisive factor of success. People with high IQ were assumed to have a life of accomplishment and achievement and researchers debated that intelligence was the product of genes or the environment. However, some critics began to realize that high intelligence was no guarantee for success in life, it was perhaps too narrow a concept to fully include the wide range of human abilities and knowledge.

IQ is still recognized as an important element of success, particularly when it comes to academic achievement. People with high IQ typically do well in school and tend to be healthier in general. But today experts recognize it isn’t the only determination of life success. Instead, it is part of a complex series of influences that includes EQ. The concept of EQ has influenced many areas, including the business world. Many companies now have EQ training and use EQ tests as part of the hiring process.

Research has found that individuals with strong leadership potential also tend to be more emotionally intelligent, suggesting that a high EQ is an important quality for business leaders and managers to have. One insurance company discovered that EQ could play a vital role in sales success.

Emotional abilities can also influence the choices that consumers make when making buying decisions. Nobel-prize winning psychologist Daniel Kahneman has found that people would rather deal with a person they trust and like rather than someone they don’t, even if that means paying more for a product that may be of low quality.

According to one recent study, approximately 50% of kids took part in SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) programs and almost 40% of them showed improved grade-point-averages. These programs were also linked to increased school attendance and reduced disciplinary problems. Some strategies for teaching EQ include offering character education, modeling positive behaviors, encouraging people to think about how others are feeling.

1What quality should a business leader have according to the text?

    A.Having good appearances.

    B.Having a master’s degree.

    C.Being emotionally intelligent.

    D.Graduating from a famous university.

2What can be learned from Kahneman’s finding?

A.Consumers with high EQ is unlikely to be cheated.

B.Consumers with high EQ prefer buying bargains.

C.EQ is very important to sales people.

D.Sales people with high EQ are usually honest.

3What can we know from the last paragraph?

A.Most kids have taken part in SEL programs.

    B.EQ can be strengthened.

C.Kids with high IQ have better achievement scores.

D.The SEL programs have made most kids perform better.

4What is the text mainly about?

A.EQ is as important as IQ.

B.EQ is much more important than IQ.

C.People with high EQ will definitely succeed.

D.IQ is the most important factor of success.

The Internet E-commerce and globalization are making a new economic age possible. In the future, capitalist markets will largely be replaced by a new kind of economic system based on 1 relationships, contractual arrangements and access rights.

Has the quality of our lives at work, at home and in our communities increased in direct proportion to all the new Internet and business-to-business Internet services being introduced into our lives? I have asked this question of hundreds of CEOs and corporate executives in Europe and the United States. Surprisingly, virtually everyone has said, “No, quiet 2.” They say they are working longer hours, feel more stressed, are more impatient, and are even less civil in their dealings with colleagues and friends-not to mention strangers. And what’s more revealing, they place much of the blame on the very same technologies they are so 3 supporting.

The technological leader promised us that access would make life more convenient. Instead, the very technological wonders that were supposed to 4 us have begun to enslave us in a web of connections from which there seems to be no easy 5.

If an earlier generation was preoccupied with the quest to enclose a vast 6 land, the .com generation, it seems, is more caught up in the colonization of time. Every spare moment of our time is being filled with some form of commercial connection, making time itself the 7 of all resources.

And while we have created every kind of labor-and time-saving device to service our needs, we are beginning to feel like we have less time available to us than any other humans in history. Maybe we need to ask what kinds of connections really 8 in the e-economy age. If this new technology 9 is only about super efficiency, then we risk losing something even precious than time-our sense of what it means to be a(n) 10 human being.

  • 35、Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word. For the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.

    My daughter

(A story told by a father, a famous actor)

My wife and I only had the one child. We had Amy.

I see her as my best friend. I think she’d always come to me first if she had a problem. We have the same sense of humor, and share interests. 1 I don’t mind animals, she’s completely fascinated with them, and she has always had dogs, cats, horses, and goldfish in her life.

We were 2 (close) when she was about four, which I think is a lovely age for a child. They know the parents best, and don’t have outside contacts. She must have grown up suddenly when she went to school, because I remember her growing away from her family slightly. Any father who has a teenager daughter comes across an extraordinary collection of people, and there seemed to be an endless stream of strange young men 3 (come) through our house. By the time I learned their names they 4 (go) away and I had to start learning a new lot.

I wanted more than anything else for her to be happy in 5 she was doing, and I was prepared to pull strings to help her on her way. When she left a good school she decided she wanted to become an actress so I got her into drama school. It wasn’t to her liking so she joined a theatre group and began doing bits and pieces in films. She was doing well, but then gave it up. She probably found it boring. Then she took up social work, and finally went to work 6a designer and he became her husband. And that’s really the story of her life. She must be happy with him—they’re always together.

We have such similar tastes in books and music 7 I used to take her to see an opera, which is my big passion. However, I don’t think she likes it very much. She doesn’t come with me anymore.

I don’t think she’s a big television watcher. She knows when I’m on the television, and she 8 watch, but I don’t know. It’s not the kind of thing she tells me.

We’re very grateful for Amy. She’s a good daughter as daughters go. We’re looking forward to being grandparents.

  • 36、Directions: Complete the following sentences by using the proper form of the words or expressions given in the frame. Each one can only be used once.

Why your Password May Not Be As Safe As It Seems?  Does “qaz2ws” strike you as a nice safe password? What about “adgjmptw”? An analysis has found them to be among the passwords that are most 1 used, which of course means they are not secure at all.

When ten million passwords were leaked on to the internetthey appeared to 2that attempts by internet security experts to make us improve our password strength had been successful, even if, in the specific case of the leaked passwords, they are also completely pointless.

While many of the passwords were still single words, such as “password”there was also a clear attempt by many to make them harder to3. The problem was that people seemed to do so in the same way.

“Users are becoming slightly more 4what makes a password strong,” explained WP Engine, an internet company that performed the analysis. “For instance, adding a number or two at the end of a text phrase. That makes it better, right?”

But 5no. They found that almost half a million passwords did this and in 20 percent of those all people did was put the number “1” at the end.

Perhaps this is why some companies are now trying to move gradually beyond passwords. Yahoo! is giving users the option to 6 their mobile phone with an account, having a single use passwords texted to it each time they want to log on.

Although the serviced is voluntary, Dylan Casey an executive at Yahoo!said that it was “the first step to7passwords”. He said it was a(n)8that it was increasingly hard for people to remember all the passwords they had. “I don’t think we, as an industry, have done a good enough job of putting ourselves in the shoes of the people using our products,” he said.

It would certainly be a more sensible strategy than same people’s improving upon “password” by using “password” or“tran5p053d numb3r5 f0r 133tr3r5”.

“We are, for the most partpredictably9when it comes to choosing passwords, despite a decade of warnings from password strength checkers during sign-ups” said WP Engine. “We love taking a(n) 10, and so do password crackers.
