So she threw a pizza party at a homeless shelter for women and children in Houston, Texas. It took her a month to prepare.
Carrasco had volunteered before, with her family, at the Star of Hope Family Development Center. But this time was different. 【2】 In the month leading up to the party they collected toothbrushes, toothpaste and soap (肥皂). They packed them into 400 bags to hand out to residents (居民) of the shelter.
On Sunday, it was party time. The pizza was a hit, and so were the bags. 【3】 They had respect for these people. They made sure the residents knew that someone cared.
In all Carrasco and her friends served about 200 people. For the shelter residents, it was a magical day. 【4】
Carrasco did a good job but she won’t let it go to her head anytime soon. The graduating senior plans to study nursing at Briar Cliff University in Iowa in the fall. 【5】 “I’d rather make a difference in the lives of the homeless residents at Star of Hope than have a big party,” she said.

27、Ramadan is one of the most important festivals for Muslims. The name of the festival comes from the Arabic month‘in which it is celebrated. Ramadan is celebrated in countries all over the world, especially in Africa and the Middle East. The time for celebrating Ramadan varies each year. People celebrate it in the ninth month of the Arabic lunar calendar. During Ramadan, people must not eat during the day: from when the sun comes up to when the sun goes down, people celebrating Ramadan will not eat or smoke. When the sun has gone down, however, the celebration begins. People often stay up all night eating singing and dancing.
In late spring, many people around the world celebrate Easter. The festival is a celebration of spring and it is also a religious holiday. It is the time for Easter bunnies and egg hunts, and of course for eating lots of delicious foods. Easter is celebrated in late March or early April but the exact dates are different form year to year. People celebrate Easter in different ways: in some countries, the Easter Bunny—a big rabbit—will visit and children will go on egg hunts, looking for eggs and candy that have been hidden by their parents. 28、 It was once common to regard Britain as a society with class distinction. Each class had unique characteristics.
In recent years, many writers have begun to speak the ‘decline of class’ and ‘classless society’ in Britain. And in modern day consumer society everyone is considered to be middle class. But pronouncing the death of class is too early. A recent wide-ranging society of public opinion found 90 percent of people still placing themselves in particular class; 73 percent agreed that class was still a vital part of British society; and 52 percent thought there were still sharp class differences. Thus, class may not be culturally and politically obvious, yet it remains an important part of British society. Britain seems to have a love of stratification.
One unchanging aspect of a British person’s class position is accent. The words a person speaks tell her or his class. A study of British accents during 1970s found that a voice sounding like a BBC newsreader was viewed as the most attractive voice. Most people said this accent sounded ‘educated’ and ‘soft’. The accents placed at the bottom in this study, on the other hand, were regional (地区的) city accents. These accents were seen as ‘common’ and ‘ugly’. However, a similar study of British accents in the US turned these results upside down and placed some regional accents as the most attractive and BBC English as the least. This suggests that British attitudes towards accent have deep roots and are based on class prejudice.
In recent years, however, young upper middle-class people in London, have begun to adopt some regional accents, in order to hide their class origins. This is an indication of class becoming unnoticed. However, the 1995 pop song ‘Common People’ puts forward the view that though a middle-class person may ‘want to live like common people’ they can never appreciate the reality of a working-class life.

29、Piranhas(食人鱼)
Although only a small number of piranhas are considered to be dangerous to humans, the red-bellied piranha is definitely one of those. The evidence has shown that a large group of piranhas can eat a group of large animals crossing the river, leaving only bones. This fish lives in the freshwater steams of South America, and they can smell the blood from far away and launch attacks swiftly. It is said that they are only dangerous to humans if the water volumes are less and lower.
Anaconda(水蟒)
This South American monster often appears in the films or your nightmares! They can weigh over 230 kilograms. It is often considered to be the biggest snake in the world. You certainly don't want to get caught alone with this snake due to its method of attacking and killing its victim. It is indeed a remarkably different snake as it regularly coils(缠绕) around all over its target, increasing the pressure until eventually its victim dies. It has over 100 sharp teeth. They don't have poison. Sometimes it prefers to camouflage itself so it looks like its surroundings and swiftly draws back when humans are near.
Poisonous Frogs
The Golden Poison Frog might be the most-deadly(致命的) of the South American animals, which is protected by means of poison. This very small frog, less than 55 mm in length, has enough strength to take down a pair of African elephants. This frog has always been known to kill people who have touched it directly. It's also been noted that chicken and dogs have died by contacting a tissue(组织) on which a Golden Poison Frog had wandered! In bright colours, they look attractive to capture its targets.
