  • 27、Can you imagine a world without music? Studies show that public schools across the country are cutting back on music classes to save money. Worse, some schools have never had music classes to begin with. But without them, students’ academic growth and emotional health could suffer. In fact, music classes are necessary for all students in schools.

Recent studies by Brown University have shown that students who received music education classes were better in maths and reading skills than those without music classes. Another study by the College Board found that students taking music and art classes got higher points. Students' academic success seems to depend on their taking part in music education.

Music programmes in public schools also help to add to a students sense of pride and self-confidence. Teens today have too many learning tasks. Besides, they have family problems, self-confidence problems, relationship troubles, and other troubles. All of these can stop academic success, but music education can help. A study by the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse found that students who took part in school music programmes were less likely to turn to drugs. Music programmes encourage students to work together to produce an excellent performance.

Music crosses language, class, cultural and political boundaries. Music allows students from different countries to connect. For example, at a school talent show, a new Japanese student played a piano duet with an American classmate. Although they could not communicate verbally, they were able to read the music in order to play the duet. Two students from different cultures worked as a team with self-confidence and common purpose through music.

The gift of music is priceless. We need to be sure to have necessary music classes for all students. The world is losing its music, and putting music into schools is the first step to get it back.

B.Students with great success like to attend music lessons.

C.Music plays an important role in students’ success.

  • 29、Beginning college is exciting: new ideas to explore, new challenges to be met and many decisions to be made; your future begins here.

However, you will find college life is different from your previous school environment. Many of us can be easily defeated by the details of running a well-balanced life. While some of us may have the know-how, I guess there are more of us who can benefit from learning about the experiences of others who have walked the college halls before you.

The following you may find useful about life on campus:

Plan well. There are so many new things to do at a new college or university. Give yourself time to make new friends and became familiar with the campus, but don’t forget why you are there. Give some time for social activities and manage your time wisely.

If you don’t have a “system” for planning your time now (like a day timer, a potable data book), get one. Most of all, don’t depend on your memory.

Don’t miss the guidelines. The restrictions, rules and regulations of all kinds can usually be found in your student’s handbook. Consider them well-balanced food for thought. What dates are important? What pieces of paper need to be handed in? What can / can’t you do in your student residence (住处)? Who has the right for what? What do you need to complete to graduate?

Write the word “STUDY” on the walls of your bedroom and bathroom, and maybe it will help to write it on a piece of paper and stick it on the telephone, TV and the kitchen table. Consider this you are paying thousands of dollars for your course. You pay every time you have to repeat or replace a course.

Build your identity. This is the time for you to decide what to do and what not to do. Take as much time as you need to explore new ideas. Do not be afraid of the beyond. This is learning to make good choices.

【1】 What is the main purpose of the passage?

    A. To explain why college life is exciting.

    B. To persuade you to go to college.

    C. To describe the importance of college life.

    D. To offer advice on college life.

【2】According to the passage, why is it exciting to begin college life?

    A. Because you will learn a lot of knowledge.

    B. Because you will no longer be afraid of challenges.

    C. Because you will make important decisions.

    D. Because you get yourself prepared for your future career and life there.

    【3】The underlined word “know-how” refers to _________.

    A. an understanding of college regulations.

    B. a brand-new environment.

    C. practical knowledge concerning college life.

    D. college rules and regulations.

【4】Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

    A. college students should know what they have fought for on campus.

    B. college students should spend as much time as possible on social activities.

    C. college students needn’t learn from those who went to college before them.

    D. college students don’t need to pay if they repeat or replace a course.
