24、I remembered Julie coming to the front of the classroom after class one autumn day in September 1976. While most of the other students hurriedly left to enjoy the pleasant weather or to relax at the student union, Julie remained to ask me questions about the next week’s exam. She had clearly already done some serious studying.
Julie never made it to the exam. The day after our conversation, she was hit by a large truck as she rode a bike through a crossroads. I was sad to hear that Julie lay unconscious (昏迷的) in a hospital across town from our university.
Nurses silently came and went from Julie’s room. Her parents stood nearby quietly. Then the doctor entered the room and said to Julie’s parents and two brothers, “Your Julie has only a few hours to live.” He continued to ask, “Would you think about donating some of Julie’s organs (器官)?”
At the same time in a neighboring city, a woman called Mary was trying to see better in her small living room. Her eyes followed every movement of her lively two-year-old baby. This mother was storing up memories when she could no longer see her child. Several cities away, a young father called John was reading to his two sons in the hospital. However, he was told to have only weeks to live. His only hope was a kidney transplant (肾脏移植).
The two parents looked at each other, the doctor could see tears in their eyes. “Yes. Julie had once said she wanted to donate her organs in the event of her death. Julie always gave to others while she was alive. She would like to give in death.”
Within twenty-four hours, Mary was told that she would receive one of Julie’s eyes, and John was told to start preparing for a kidney transplant. Julie’s other organs would give life to other waiting patients.
“Julie died right after her twentieth birthday. Nothing could possibly be as heartbreaking as the death of your child,” says Julie’s mother. She continues, “But Julie’s life was a gift to us. Knowing that in her death, she gave the gift of life and sight to others is comforting to us. ”

“Well,” said the young judge, “I have read the contract carefully, and it does not say anything about taking his blood. It says ‘a pound of flesh (肉)’. You can take your pound of flesh, but you may not take one drop of his blood. If you take any of his blood, the duke (公爵) will take everything you own.”
Now it was Graziano’s turn to praise the judge and call him wise. “Did you hear that, Shylock?” he asked. “What a wise judge!”
“You wanted justice (公正),” Portia told Shylock, “and you will have it. You will have more justice than you wanted.”
Shylock didn’t want to give everything he owned to the duke. He decided not to take his pound of flesh. He said he would take the money. “Give me ninety thousand dollars,” he said, “and I will have pity on Antonio and let him go.”
Bassanio was happy to give him the money. “Here it is,” he said. “I have it ready for you.” He was very pleased that his friend Antonio would not die.
“Wait!” Portia said again. “He does not want the money. It is not written in the contract, and he said he would not do anything that was not written in the contract. Shylock, you can take your pound of flesh, just as the contract says. Why are you waiting?”
Shylock said he just wanted to have his money back. “Just give me the money I lent you. I won’t even ask for interest,” he said. Bassanio was ready to give it to him, but again Portia stopped him. “He said he wanted only the penalty that is in the contract.”
Shylock understood that he would not get his pound of flesh. He understood he would not get his money. He decided to go home.
“Wait!” said Portia, for the third time, “The law of Venice says that if you plan to kill a citizen of Venice, you will lose everything that you own. Half of what you have will belong to the person you tried to kill, and the other half will belong to the duke.”

Some of his friends visited him a few days after he got back. “I had a very dangerous trip while I was in Russia,” Jack said to them. “I wanted to see a friend of mine in the country and the bad weather made me very late. So I was still traveling through a forest in a sleigh(雪橇) when the sun went down. It was a long way from my friend’s house when about twenty wolves began to follow my sleigh. It was very dark in the forest. There was thick snow on the ground. It was cold, and there were no houses for miles and miles. First I heard the wolves. The noise was terrible! The horses heard them, too. They were frightened and began running faster. Then I saw long, gray forms among the trees, and soon the wolves were near us. They were running very fast, and they didn’t seem to get tired like the horses.”
“What did you do?” one of Jack’s friends asked.
“When the wolves got very near,” Jack answered, “I put up my gun and shot the first wolf. The sleigh was moving about, but I hit the animal and killed it. Then all the other wolves stopped and ate it, so our sleigh got away from them for a few minutes.”
“Then they finished their meal, and I heard them coming again. The moon was shining brightly on the snow now, and after a few minutes I saw them running among the trees once more. They came nearer again, and then I shot another of them, and the others stopped once more to eat it.”
