二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Eating is best when it’s a social occasion. Think of the meal a family enjoys in the evening when everyone’s together after work or school, or the big get-togethers over food at Spring Festival. But now, in the age of the internet and social media, anyone with an internet connection can enjoy a social eating event.

Mukbang – a South Korean phrase meaning “eating broadcast” – is an unusual food craze that’s sweeping the country. This is a meal where only one person gets to eat, while viewers watch live streams of hosts devouring large quantities of food. They leave comments on the dishes the host is tucking into, and the host responds to them live.

So why have people taken to this unusual new food trend? Jeff Yang, an Asian-American cultural critic, thinks that it’s down to “the loneliness of unmarried or uncoupled South Koreans”. He believes that eating on your own can be hard in a country like South Korea, where social eating is such a long tradition. However, mukbang gives people the feeling that they seems to be part of something larger.

Millions of people have trouble with food. Either they eat too much of it, or too little. Some say that the popularity of mukbang helps people with these disorders. Those who always eat too much and put on weight can watch mukbang streams to satisfy their appetite. And those who don’t eat enough can build their appetite by watching delicious food being eaten.

Even though mukbang is a South Korean phenomenon, it’s also taken off in the US. But unlike South Koreans who sit down to enjoy noodles and kimchi, Americans enjoy their own native dishes. This means that viewers of US mukbang streamers will see locals stuffing themselves with hamburgers, fries and ice cream.

【1】According to Paragraph 2, “eating broadcast” is ____________.

A.a TV show in which only one person gets to eat while viewers watch

B.a live program where a host is crazy about various kinds of food

C.a fashion that many viewers watch one person eating large quantities of food

D.an online broadcast where a host eats lots of food while interacting with viewers

【2】What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.Americans would like to sit down to enjoy noodles and kimchi.

B.Mukbang is becoming more and more popular in the US.

C.The dishes of South Korea are also popular in the US.

D.Viewers of US will see South Koreans feeding themselves with hamburgers and fries.

【3】What’s the author’s attitude towards this new food trend?

    A.Objective.

    B.Negative.

    C.Favorable.

    D.Worried.

  • 27、Strangest ways to be polite in Japan

What may be considered polite in one country could be rude in another, or the other way around.【1】 The following are several strangest ways to be polite in Japan.

While in Japan, make no sounds on some occasions, particularly when it comes to public transportation. Anyone who has been to Japan before has experienced the near-silent trains, sometimes filled with hundreds of people not making a sound.

【2】 They value how other people feel just as much if not more than themselves. So disturbing others by making unnecessary noises is not acceptable.

Meanwhile, be careful not to pour your own drinks when you’re out eating with friends, or you might be thought to be selfish.“But wait,” you might say, “ what do I do if my glass is empty and I want a drink ? 【3】

No need to worry, friend! Just fill up some other people’s glasses that are getting a little low. 【4】

Another Japanese strange way to be polite is when you want to express gratitude, you don’ t use the word for “ thank you ”, but instead you use the word for “sorry ”. In situations like when someone does you a favor, or even often when they give you a gift, saying “sorry” in English would just seem awkward. 【5】

    A.Just die of thirst?

    B.Japan is no exception.

C.In Japanese it’s perfectly natural, though.

D.Maybe this one isn’t so strange to some people.

E.Chances are that they’ll fill yours up right away.

F.When you go to a restaurant in Japan, what sound fills the air?

G.Japanese people are as a whole quite sensitive to the feelings of others.

  • 28、   Ignore what they say about TV rotting your brain — our research found that many people are using television shows as both a form of entertainment and a way to help them learn English. One of the best ways to teach and to learn how to speak the English language is to actually watch American and British television shows and some learning channels.

We were interested in discovering what English learners are watching to help them improve their skills outside of the classroom. US political drama series House of Cards was the most popular TV show among our 6,000 global survey participants, particularly in China, South Korea and India. British period drama Downtown Abbey is the favourite of Russian and Japanese respondents, however, learners in Mexico, the USA, Turkey and Brazil prefer Breaking Bad.

The rise of on-demand streaming services has enabled viewers all over the world to watch shows without having to wait for them to be broadcast in their country, which explains why shows created especially for online providers, such as House of Cards, have become so universally popular.

Perhaps one of the biggest surprise success stories is Downtown Abbey, which is one of the most-watched British TV shows of all time. The show, which explores the lives of an aristocratic (贵族的) British family and their servants during the early twentieth century, has been watched by more than 120 million people worldwide. Downtown’s creators didn’t expect the subject matter to resonate (引起共鸣) so well with global viewers, but most of the stories are about emotional situations that everyone can relate to, no matter where they are in the world.

Television programs may be a fun way to improve vocabularies and build familiarity with genuine dialogue and different cultures, but in recent years there have been complaints (抱怨) that actors are mumbling (含糊地说) their way through their lines. Even native English speakers are struggling to understand what they are watching on screen. This is partly down to the desire for actors to appear “genuine” and capture the true feature of a character.

1Why has the drama series House of Cards become so popular?

A.Because it is only shown on TV.

    B.Because its stories interest everyone.

C.Because it is about the life of the British aristocracy.

D.Because audiences can watch it online without waiting.

2What has been the problem with language learning through television programs in recent years?

    A.The actors’ terrible acting.

    B.The actors’ unclear lines.

    C.The dramas’ bad plots.

    D.The dramas’ bad lines.

3We can infer that the purpose of the research is to ______.

A.show that people like American and British TV shows

B.introduce viewers to the world’s most popular TV series

C.prove that television shows are helpful in learning English

D.explain the function of television shows

4What is the text mainly about?

A.A fun way to learn English.

    B.How to learn English better.

C.Where to find popular foreign TV shows.

D.The disadvantages of watching TV shows.

  • 29、   Don’t get mad the next time you catch your teenager texting when he promises to be studying. He simply may not be able to resist. A University of lowa (UI) study found teenagers are far more sensitive than adults to the immediate effect or reward of their behaviors. The findings may help explain why the initial rush of texting may be more attractive for adolescents than the long-term payoff of studying.

“For the teenager, the rewards are seductive.” says Professor Jatin Vaidya, an author of the study. “They draw adolescents. Sometimes, the rewards are a kind of motivation for them. Even when a behavior is no longer in a teenager’s best interest to continue, they will, because the effect of the reward is still there and lasts much longer in adolescents than in adults.”

For parents, that means limiting distractions so teenagers can make better choices. Take the homework and social media dilemma: At 9 p.m., shut off everything except a computer that has no access to Facebook or Twitter, the researchers advise. “I’m not saying they shouldn’t be allowed access to technology,” Vaidya says “But some help in resetting their concentration is necessary for them so they can develop those impulse-control skills.”

In their study, Vaidya and co-author Shaun Vecera note researchers generally believe teenagers are impulsive(冲动的), make bad decisions, and engage in risky behavior because the frontal lobes(额叶) of their brains are not fully developed. But the UI researchers wondered whether something more fundamental was going on with adolescents to cause behaviors independent of higher-level reasoning.

“We wanted to try to understand the brain’s reward system and how it changes from childhood to adulthood," says Vaidya, who adds that the reward character in the human brain is easier than decision-making. “We’ve been trying to understand the reward process in adolescence and whether there is more to adolescent behavior than an under-developed frontal lobe,” he adds. For their study, the researchers persuaded 40 adolescents, aged 13 and 16, and 40 adults, aged 20 and 35 to participate.

In the future, researchers hope to look into the psychological and neurological(神经学上的)aspects of their results.

1What does the passage mainly tell us?

A.Always, rewards are attractive to teenagers.

    B.Sometimes, adolescents just can’t resist.

C.Resistance can be controlled well by adolescents.

D.Getting rewards is the greatest motivation for adolescents to study.

2What does the underlined word “seductive” mean?

    A.Necessary. B.Attractive.

    C.Useful. D.Important.

3Which statement agrees with Vaidya’s idea?

A.The influence of the reward is weak in adolescents.

B.Parents should help children in making decisions.

C.Children should have access to the Internet.

D.Children need help in refocusing their attention.

4What result does teenagers’ brain underdevelopment lead to?

A.Doing things after some thought. B.Making good decisions.

C.Joining in dangerous actions. D.Escaping risky behavior.
