二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、There’s a world of difference between a horror movie and a comedy -- the former scares you half to death while the latter leaves you rolling on the floor laughingly. But try watching them without the background music and you just might decide they’re not so different after all. Music and movies have been closely connected since the beginning of the film industry--even before the voices of actors were recorded. In movies, music helps to provide a sense of time and place, express ideas about the characters and, most importantly, draw emotions out of the audience.

Studies have long shown that our heart rates and anxiety levels rise and fall depending on the speed of the music we hear. Using this knowledge, composers use sudden changes in film music speed to create fear among audiences. Slowing the speed of the music will have the opposite effect, bringing about a sense of peace or a dreamlike quality. The use of dissonant tones and noises is another technique that heightens tension. Humans naturally become anxious when we hear dissonant sounds because such noises are usually combined with danger, like those that animals make to warn against predators(捕食者).

As important as it is, the best film music is subtle. All that audiences are supposed to feel is a heightened sense of emotion--they shouldn’t realize what’s causing it. Only when the music is taken out of the film should audiences understand its effects.

In keeping with this principle, some filmmakers are even using what’s called “infrasound”(次声波) to cause fear. While we may not be able to hear it because its frequency(频率) is below the range of the human ear, infrasound has been proven to cause anxiety, tremble and even sorrow. For example, infrasound was used in the soundtrack of the 2007 horror movie Paranormal Activity, and audiences were at extremely high fear levels despite the lack of action throughout the movie. “It doesn’t affect everyone equally,” said British science writer Philip Ball, author of The Music Instinct, but he predicted that “we will see more of it used in movies in the future.”

【1】What is the difference between a horror movie and a comedy?

    A.Their history.

    B.Their time and place.

    C.Their actors.

    D.Their background music.

    【2】What causes fear among audiences?

    A.The theme of the music.

B.The slow speed of the music.

C.The unexpected change of the music.

    D.The knowledge of the music.

【3】What does the underlined word“subtle” in the third paragraph mean?

    A.Gentle.

    B.Wonderful.

    C.Not immediately attractive.

    D.Not extremely obvious.

【4】What do we know about "infrasound" from the last paragraph?

A.It can’t be known to people.

    B.It makes audiences relaxed.

C.It may be used more in movies in the future.

D.It is within the range of the human ear.

  • 27、Scott Edwards stopped his cross-country bike trip when he found a red-headed woodpecker (啄木鸟). “I got my first good look today,” he says. He was phoning from his tent in Illinois later that night. “I hadn’t seen the red head until today, so I was very excited.”

Edwards is a bird researcher at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass. Over this past summer, he rode across the United States. In some degree, he did it to see the country. But he also used the trip to do some serious bird-watching. That’s something he’s been doing for more than 40 years.

When he was growing up in the Riverdale neighborhood of the Bronx in New York City, there were lots of trees, he recalls (回想). When he was nine or ten, a neighbor took him bird-watching. Edwards has been doing it ever since. But finding those birds is getting more difficult. “The numbers of birds are dying down,” he says. And Edwards is hardly the only one to notice it. Scientists around the world have been finding the same thing.

A 2018 study by Bird Life International found that birds around the world are in trouble. There are about 11,000 species of birds. Four in every ten species of them are decreasing in number. That’s true for all kinds of birds living in all types of habitats (栖息地). Only a few members of these species remain in the wild. And even common birds are less common than they were just 50 years ago. What’s worse, that’s now true almost everywhere.

【1】Why did Scott Edwards feel excited?

A.He found a good way to set up his tent.

B.He took a bike trip alone successfully.

    C.He became good-looking during travel.

D.He saw a special bird for the first time.

【2】What has Scott Edwards been doing for over 40 years?

    A.Doing bird-watching.

    B.Studying at Harvard University.

    C.Biking around the world.

    D.Looking for red-headed woodpeckers.

【3】What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?

    A.Birds are decreasing in number.

    B.Birds remain in the wild.

    C.Birds are easy to find.

    D.Species of birds are increasing.

【4】From which part of a magazine is the text most probably taken?

    A.Health.

    B.Medicine.

    C.Environment.

    D.Travel.

  • 28、In October, I told the eight-year-olds in the class I teach in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey, about my plan. “Since all of you have done extra jobs around the house to earn some money,” I said, “then we’ll buy food for a Thanksgiving dinner for someone who might not have a nice dinner otherwise.”

I watched them while they walked up and down the supermarket. “Flowers!”   Kristine cried. The group rushed towards the holiday plants.

“You can’t eat flowers.”— It was wiser to use any extra money to buy something that could be turned into meals.

“But Mrs Sherlock,” came the begging voice, “we want flowers.”

Defeated finally, I put a pot of “funny” purple mums in the cart full of foods. “She’ll like this one,” the children agreed.

An organisation had given us the name and address of a needy grandmother who had lived alone for many years. We finally pulled up in front of a small house. A slightly-built woman with a weary face came to the door to welcome us.

My little group ran to get the foods. As each box was carried in, the old woman kept on saying “Thanks.”— much to her visitors’ pleasure. When Amy put the mums on the counter, the woman seemed surprised. She was wishing it was a bag of rice, I thought.

We returned to the car. As we fastened our seat belts, we could see the kitchen window. The woman inside waved goodbye, then turned and walked across the room, past the turkey, past the goods, straight to the mums. She put her face in them. When she raised her head, there was a smile on her face. She was transformed (转变) before our eyes.

The children were quiet. At that moment, they had seen for themselves the power they have to make another person’s life better. The children had sensed that sometimes a person needs a pot of funny purple flowers on a dark November day.

【1】What does the story mainly tell us?

A.Everyone has the power to change the world.

B.Acts of kindness can change someone’s life.

C.The poor people may need flowers as well.

D.Children have different thoughts from adults.

【2】What does the underlined word “mums” in Paragraph 5 refer to in the passage?

    A.Mothers.

    B.Teachers.

    C.Flowers.

    D.Gifts.

【3】Why did the author consider the mums “funny”?

A.She thought they were too ugly.

B.She thought they were for children.

C.She thought they were too expensive.

D.She thought they couldn’t help people in need.

【4】What can we know from the passage?

A.The old woman preferred food to flowers.

B.Flowers are more important than food to the poor.

C.The old woman’s dark day was brightened by the children.

D.All the money the children earned was transformed into food.

  • 29、When people think of winter sports, they usually think of ice skating, skiing or snowboarding. Without doubt, these are some of the most popular winter sportsalthough, thanks to man-made snow we can play most of these sports all year round!

Last weekend, I went snowshoeing with a group of teachers from my school. Although I had walked in very deep snow almost two years ago, I had never tried snowshoeing before. A snowshoe is, actually, a large plastic frame(框架) which you fix to your own shoes. The snowshoe increases the surface area of your feet, therefore making you less likely to sink in the snow.

At first, it felt a little strangea bit like wearing flippers(脚蹼)when you swim! I felt quite uncomfortable to start with, and it was difficult to climb over the fallen trees with the snowshoes fixed to my feet. However, I love hiking and am used to walking in mountainous areas so I soon got used to it. I loved walking through the forest and seeing all the trees covered in snow! At times, walking uphill in the snow was hard, especially when there were rocks under the snow. That said, once we reached the top it was worth it! The mountain we climbed was called “Le Tanet” and it was 1,292m high. That’s higher than Snowdon, the tallest mountain in Wales! The sky was a bit grey, but the views were fantastic. I managed to get some great photos. After taking lots of photos, we started the descent. In some ways, going down the mountain was harder than going up. It was easy to slip in the snow.

At the bottom, we had a hot drink in a small wood house. It was surely needed after a few hours of walking in the cold! Before we went home, I had a go at sledging(乘雪橇), which I’d never tried before! It was great fun!

Overall, I’d really suggest snowshoeing as an alternative(替代物) to the more well-known winter sports. Besides being a lot cheaper than skiing, it’s easier and is considered to be a lot safer!

【1】The author soon got used to walking with the snowshoes because he ________.

    A.had experience in ice skating

B.often climbed trees in the forest

C.was good at swimming with flippers

D.often went hiking in mountainous areas

【2】What does “the descent” in paragraph 3 refer to?

    A.Going down the mountain.

    B.Taking a lot of photos.

    C.Enjoying the beautiful scenery.

    D.Falling down in the snow.

【3】What does the author think of snowshoeing at last?

    A.Fun.

    B.Uncomfortable.

    C.Dangerous.

    D.Practical.

【4】What type of writing is this text?

    A.A sports report.

    B.An advertisement for sledge.

    C.A personal experience.

    D.A travel guide.
