四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、For too many people, the harm begins early in life. Four out of ten babies born in the United States do not form a strong relationship with either parent, and they will pay for that in the rest of their lives.

New research from Princeton University confirms what  other researchers have already found: the number of babies who are lack of the close relationship is rather big, which prevents them having a fair chance of having a successful life.

That finding is supported by many other research projects, including a study from the University of Rochester showing that nearly one third of US parents don’t know what to expect from their newborns, or how to help them grow and learn and get along with others. Babies, as others have pointed out, don’t come with an owner’s guide book.

The basic problem, according to the Princeton’s study, is that 40 per cent of babies in the US live in fear or distrust of their parents, and that will turn into aggressiveness (侵犯), defiance (违抗) and hyperactivity (多动) as they grow into adults.

Of that number, 25 per cent don’t have a close relationship with their parents because the parents don’t satisfy their needs. And 15 per cent find their parents are so troubling that they will avoid them whenever possible.

That will not necessarily result in a lifetime of violence, but it will make living a successful life much more difficult.

“They can overcome(克服) it,” sociologist Sophie Moullin of Princeton, the leader of that study, said in a telephone interview. “It’s not a make-or-break situation, but they might find it harder to control their behaviour.”

Moullin, along with his teammates from Columbia University and the University of Bristol in England, studied more than 100 research projects, to reach their conclusions.

Many reasons lead to the problem, including poverty(贫穷), ignorance(无知), and stress among parents who are so busy with their own problems that a new child is sometimes more than they can deal with.

Yet strong relationships, the researchers say, are amazingly simple to achieve.

1According to the writing style of the passage, it may be a___________.

    A. news report B. book report C. novel D. review

2Which of the following is NOT true?

    A. About 40 % of the newborns do not form a strong relationship with either parent.

    B. Some parents are too busy with their own problems to deal with a new child.

    C. Parents’ failing to satisfy their babies’ needs may cause future problems.

    D. Babies who fail to have close relationships with their parents are sure to have an unsuccessful life.

3What may be discussed in the following paragraph?

    A. Findings of other projects similar to this topic.

    B. Examples of the results of lacking strong relationships.

    C. Simple ways of achieving strong relationships with a baby.

    D. Reasons for failing in building up strong relationships with a baby.

4Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?

    A. It’s harder to control children’s behaviour

    B. What a little love means to a little one

    C. The problems of the parents in the United States

    D. The problems of the babies in the United States

  • 26、Few kids today are taught the value of sympathy(同情心). It seems so hard for people to show their love and care towards others and to actually understand what others are going through.

As a child I was taught to go out of my way to make someone else happy. My mom told me to say at least one kind word to someone else every day. I admit(承认) that it wasn't very easy to do. But as soon as you see the look of happiness in that person's eyes, you just want to do as much as you can do.

I had an experience with a guy whom people were always making fun of. Every time I saw that happening, I knew in my heart that it was wrong. I decided I would try to be his friend. I started walking with him and introducing him to people around us. I was making him happy by just doing that. And I loved the fact that I was making a difference in his life.

After a while I realized that he wasn't the kind of person everybody thought he was. We are still good friends today. People have almost completely stopped making fun of him. But he is still what he was. What changed was the attitudes of others towards him.

From this experience I’ve learned to be more loving toward other people. What I did for my friend was so easy. And at the same time I had a lot of fun. So I hope that everyone can say a kind word to someone else at least once a day. I can promise you it will be the best feeling you can ever get.

One kind word can make someone’s day brighter.

1According to the writer, more kids should be taught the value of   .

    D. fight for my own

3What was NOT the way I chose when I saw a guy who was being made fun of?

    A. I made up my mind to be his friend.

    B. I started walking with him.

    C. I introduced him to people around us.

    D. I helped him talk back.

4Which of the following sentences is TRUE according to the passage?

    A. It was very easy for me to say at least one kind word to others at first.

    B. I realized that the guy was the kind of person everybody thought he was.

    C. The guy changed himself to make others stop making fun of him.

    D. What changed was the attitudes of others toward the guy.

5What does the writer want to tell us?

    A. We can’t change others easily.

    B. One kind word can make others happy.

    C. We can change ourselves to change others.

    D. We don’t need to teach the kids sympathy.

  • 27、   In June last year, I had an opportunity to do volunteer work in a small village which is located in northern Australia, far from the cities. Living there is an experience that cannot be fully defined in just words. Although the people of this small village are short of the much material wealth that most of us in big cities have, their positive(积极的) outlook on life is comparable to what we have.

The small village suffered a natural disaster(灾难)about two years ago. Many people lost their material belongings and their houses. Soon after the disaster, families had to live under one roof in houses that were suitable for just- one family. Instead of feeling bottled in, the people felt more of  sense of belonging when families had to live together in such conditions. They banded together to help each other in rebuilding their houses.

It was still beyond my understanding how family took priority (优先) over anything else. If someone is in need, the family will provide any support needed. In cities, it is said that “Houses are getting bigger, while homes are getting smaller”. In this small village, the home will always remain big. Children are taught from an early age that family is worth more than any material wealth that they will come across. They pass the value to their kids, and the cycle continues in keeping family values.

I still remember on the third day I arrived in the small village, two elders wanted to adopt me into their tribe(宗族). As part of that process, I was given a Spirit Totem, and was told that I officially belonged to their tribe. One of the elders explained, “No one is a stranger here. You come here, and you become part of us! Can you imagine if we had that outlook in every small village or on every street on earth?

Leaving this small village was challenging for me indeed. Not only did my outlook change, but my understanding of how life can be defined in different ways took a turn for the better

1What can we know from the first paragraph?

    A. People in cities don’t live positively

    B. People in that village live a very poor life.

    C. The people in that small village are hopeful about the future.

    D. The writer didn’t want to do volunteer work there.

2What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 most likely refer to?

    A. Especially excited. B. Badly ill.

    C. very crowded. D. seriously scared.

3What can be the most important in the eyes of the people there?

    A. Family values. B. Physical health.

    C. Good living condition. D. Children’s education
