二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
• 26、One day my two sons and I got into my old car to drive to the local post office. I backed out of my drive slowly like I normally do and then pulled to a stop at the side road that leads to the main highway. When it was clear I pulled out and stepped on the gas. As I stepped on the clutch(离合器)and tried to shift into second, though, I immediately knew that something was wrong. The normally solid gear shift(档位杆)now felt like a spoon in a bowl of soup. I tried quickly to get it to lock into any of the gears but did not succeed. Thankfully, the steering wheel(方向盘)was still working fine and I allowed the car to go to the end of the side road where I was able to pull safely into a wide spot and turn the engine off.

It was only later in the day that I finally realized how blessed I had been. I could have been on the main road when that stick shift failed. I could have been in the middle of a curve with no place to turn off the road. I could have had a car too close behind me that wouldn’t have been able to stop in time. A hundred things could have made this incident dangerous or deadly. Yet, the gear shift broken at just the right moment to keep me and my boys safe.

Far too often we only see the bad things in life. We get angry when things don’t go out way, and we fail to see the thousands of times that they do. Yes, my car broken down. Still, my sons and I are safe. We are loved. And we have been given more time here in this world to share our own love and light.

1What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 refer to?

A. The clutch. B. The gear shift.

C. The spoon. D. The car.

2How did the writer stop the car at last?

A. By turning the engine off quickly.

B. By turning to a local garage for help.

C. By removing the steering wheel away.

D. By letting it slow down to stop naturally.

3The driver’s thoughts in Paragraph 2 imply that ______.

A. they were lucky enough to be safe

B. the car needed to be repaired well

C. the driver was good at driving a broken car

D. it was important to find a suitable place to park

4By writing the story, the writer expected us to ______.

A. be careful in our driving

B. ignore the bad things in our life

C. share our love with others in time

D. find a bless even from a bad situation

• 27、One of the most exciting parts of Halloween is getting pumpkins (南瓜) to decorate the inside and outside of your home. You might even enjoy carving out Jack O Lanterns and might even keep the pumpkins around until they are right at the end of looking good. So what do you do once it’s time to deal with them?

A lot of people think that it’s a good idea to throw them into the woods in order to feed them to wildlife. You would think that it’s better to do that rather than throw them in the trash. However, this is why wildlife experts are warming against doing that.

While the idea is reasonable, it is actually causing a lot of harm to the local creatures. A myth seems to have built up that leaving pumpkins in woods helps wildlife.

One of the biggest issues is that these pumpkins are frequently eaten by hedgehogs (刺猬) that are looking to gain as much weight as possible in this time of the year before winter kicks in. However, the pumpkin is actually bad for their little stomachs, causing them to experience dehydration and diarrhoea, eventually causing them to lose weight, and in some cases their lives.

Of course, while Jack O Lanterns are lovely to look at, a lot of people throw them out without cleaning out any of the candles, plastic, or anything else that has been added as decorations. This can cause damage and can even be deadly to wildlife that end up eating these thrown-away pumpkins. The rotting pumpkins could attract wildlife that is not meant to be in that specific area, like rats.

If you’re wondering what you should be doing with these old pumpkins instead, experts have some suggestions. You could try to compost (堆肥) them on your own at home. Another alternative is to ask a local farm if they want to accept them as donations. Just make sure that the way you deal with these pumpkins doesn’t end up causing harm.

【1】What is a possible result of hedgehogs eating pumpkins?

A.They put on weight.

B.Their health improves.

C.They get in danger.

D.Their diets change.

B.They can’t break down easily.

【3】What is the last paragraph mainly about?

A.Pumpkin harm you should avoid.

D.Suggestions on dealing with used pumpkins.

【4】Which of the following can be the best tile for the text?

C.Pumpkins Bring Great Fun to Holidays

• 28、 The phone rings. I wait for the answering machine to get it, but it does not. I exhale(呼 气),annoyed because I know the call would be the latest of 300 attempts to sell me products.

“Daddy, it's me. ” It's Alyce, my 12-year-old daughter “Mommy was just in a car accident.

My heart stops and then begins beating wildly.

“Are you all right?”

“Yes. ”

“Is Mommy?”

A deep sob “ I don't know. . . I don't think so. Come quick. ”

I sprint a few blocks to what looks like a scene of a disaster movie. A city bus is on the wrong side of the road, in front of which are the remains of Susan's car. Susan is severely injured but fortunately, still alive. Alyce is standing on the comer, uninjured.

Two years later at an event, our temple's musical director insisted that Susan and I had to meet someone. He returned with a woman with a bright smile. She told us, "When the accident happened that morning, I had rushed to the street and seen Alyce standing by the side of the car, crying. She wanted to call you but her phone was trapped inside the damaged vehicle. So I lent her my phone."

We had our photo taken together and introduced ourselves to each other. After hearing my name, she paused, as if maybe she hadn't heard me.

Then suddenly, she said, “Wait, your name is Susan?” Susan nodded. 'And your name is Douglas?”

“ Oh my goodness," the woman said. " My name is Susan Douglas."

1Why did the writer refuse to pick up the phone himself at first?

A.Because he was too busy.

B.Because he didn't hear the phone ring.

C.Because he thought the call is commercial.

D.Because he wanted to test the answering machine.

2What does the writer mean by saying "I sprint a few blocks"?

A.He went by a roundabout route.

B.He walked across a few barriers.

C.He wandered leisurely along the streets.

D.He ran very fast through several streets.

3What can we learn from the story?

A.Alyce was hurt seriously in the car accident.

B.The couple and the woman had met before .

C.The woman lent Alyce her phone to call her father.

D.The woman wasn't surprised when hearing “Susan”.

• 29、Kendall Ciesemier is the founder of charity Kids Caring 4 Kids, an organization she created after seeing a show on the difficult situation of AIDS orphans (孤儿) in Africa. Ciesemier was inspired to try to change the lives of those affected by AIDS and to encourage other children to do the same. She tells us of the power her personal story has in showing others they too can make a difference.

You saw Oprah’s show on AIDS orphans when you were 11 do you remember how you felt?

When I saw the show I was shocked. I had never heard of AIDS before and was concerned that kids were growing up without parents and no one had troubled to ask for my help.

I wanted to create a place for kids to get involved and a place where their small contributions would be valued and celebrated. I also felt that I needed to take immediate action myself. I found an orphan sponsorship (赞助) program online and an eight-year-old girl from Mauritania who needed my help. I started there and Kids Caring 4 Kids grew from that experience.

How has your own illness inspired you to help others?

Growing up with a rare liver (肝脏) disease made me feel different, which I think attracted me to others who were different and those struggling with something. I knew how I felt and I wanted to help reduce that feeling in someone else. I always wanted to support people. Growing up with an illness gave me empathy (移情) for others.

How does your own story inspire others?

My own personal story is evidence that people can give from anywhere. I started Kids Caring 4 Kids from a hospital room. I started by helping one person and it snowballed from there. When I share my story, I think that’s what affects people the most the fact that I started all of this during a time of personal struggle and weakness. If I could do that, then they can do something too.

B. Living with a liver disease.

【3】Ciesemier’s own illness .

Mother and I spent mornings cleaning up the dirt that blew into our house.Mother said all the dust was due to the drought, not only here in our village but all over the Great Plains.

The dirt covered everything. When my sister, Amy, and I walked to school, we wore kerchiefs (方头巾) over our mouths so that we didn't breathe in the dirt. When the air quality was so bad that the school was closed, we stayed at home and helped Mother put wet sheets over the windows, but the dirt always found a way in.

Last Sunday, there was no dirt in the air, only bright sunshine and a clear blue sky. After breakfast, Father headed out to the farm to check on the cattle while Mother started doing some washing.Amy and I played in the yard.Surprisingly, the temperature suddenly dropped.

Then Mother shouted from the house, “Christine, you and Amy get inside, quick, now!”

I looked towards the west and saw a huge black cloud. All the birds flew away.“Amy, go with Mother!” I shouted,“I'll warn Father.”

Amy ran towards the house. The storm hit so fast, and I barely saw her climb the steps. In an instant the day turned into night.I stumbled (绊倒) over our bicycles left carelessly in the yard.I screamed, hoping my voice would lead Father back.

The dirt and sand stung (刺痛) my skin like a thousand bees.I needed to get to a shelter.Covering my face with one hand, I moved towards our car which was parked in the yard and opened the door.Dirt flew in with me as I closed the door.Father was still out there! I needed to help him find the car.

I searched the dashboard (仪表板) and found the switch for the front lights.Would Father see them in the darkness? Was he safe? I pushed the horn (喇叭) again and again, hoping Father would hear it.I pushed until I had no more strength in my arms.
