四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   Clothes are traditionally made of natural materials, such as cotton, leather and wool. They are all from plants or animals, but that doesn't mean they're friendly to the earth. For example, farmers have to use a lot of chemicals to grow cotton plants.

Scientists are now looking for new ways to make clothing materials. They hope the new materials are both comfortable and good for the earth. Scientists have worked out how to make materials out of corn husks(玉米皮), chicken feathers and rice straws.

"They used to be useless things. We always have a problem of how to deal with them," Yang, a scientist says, "Now, we can turn them into beautiful materials. • 25、Portia gave the decision. “One pound of the merchant’s flesh is yours. It is what the contract says. You may take his flesh!”

Shylock held his knife and told Antonio to get ready. “Wait” exclaimed Portia. “You will not do anything that is not written in the contract. Is that right, Shylock?”

“Yes, that’s right,” said Shylock. He wondered what the wise young judge was going to say.

“Well” said the young judge, “I have read the contract carefully, and it does not say anything about taking his blood. It says ‘a pound of flesh’. You can take your pound of flesh, but you may not take one drop of his blood. If you take any of his blood, the duke will take everything you own!”

Now it was Graziano’s turn to bless the judge and call him wise.

“You wanted justice,” Portia told Shylock, “and you will have more justice than you wanted.”

Shylock didn’t want to give everything he owned to the duke. He decided not to take his pound of flesh. He said he would take the money.

“Give me ninety thousand dollars,” he said, “and I will have mercy on Antonio and let him go.”

Bassanio was happy to give him the money. He was very pleased that his friend Antonio would not die.

“Wait!” Portia said again. “He does not want the money. It is not written in the contract.”

But shylock said he just wanted to have his money back and wouldn’t even demand interest. Bassanio was ready to give it to him, but again Portia stopped him.

“He said he wanted only the penalty that is in the contract.”

Shylock understood that he would not get his pound of flesh. He understood that he would not get his money. He decided to go home.

“Wait!” said Portia, for the third time. The law of Venice, says that if you plan to kill a citizen of Venice, you will lose everything that you own. Half of what you have will belong to the person you tried to kill, and the other half will belong to the duke.

  • 26、Hyperloop: the train of the future?

We’re going through the Nevada desert, north of Las Vegas, for having a look at what its supporters believe is the future of transport. This is Hyperloop - an attempt to send passengers rushing at 700 miles an hour through a vacuum tube.

Many think that’s impossible, but this project came back last year of virgin America Inc. with Sir Richard Branson becoming chari-man. In this 500-metre test track, they say they have shown that the technology works, though they’ve not yet put any human beings on board. The head of engineering, a space scientist from NASA, sees no reason why people might be frightened.

Anita Sengupta, Head of Engineering, Virgin Hyperloop One

“The Hyperloop is a maglev train in a vacuum system. And so you can also think of it as an aircraft flying at 200,000 feet high so people don’t have any problem flying in aeroplanes and people don’t have any problem going in maglev trains. This is simply joining the two and allows you to be more energy - saving.” The Virgin Hyperloop team have said they could take passengers from London to Edinburgh in 50 minutes or cut the journey between. New York and Boston to under half an hour.

    Did you know?

The word ‘maglev’ is a combination (结合)of the words ‘magnetic’ and ‘levitation’. This is because the system uses magnets to levitate(使浮起)the train. This reduces friction(摩擦力)-- the force that makes it difficult for things to move freely when they are touching each other -- and increases speed. The first maglev train operated in Hamburg, Germany in 1979.

  • 27、To us, it seems so natural to put up an umbrella to keep the water off when it rains. But in fact the umbrella was not invented as protection against the rain. Its first use was as a shade (遮蔽) against the sun.

Nobody knows who first invented it, but the umbrella was used in very ancient times. Probably the first to use it were the Chinese, back in the eleventh century BC.

We know that the umbrella was used in ancient Egypt and Babylon as a sunshade. And there was a strange thing connected with its use : it became a symbol of honor and power(权力). In the Far East in ancient times, the umbrella was allowed to be used only by those in high office or by royal people such as the kings or queens.

In Europe, the Greeks were the first to use the umbrella as a sunshade. The umbrella was in common use in ancient Greece, but it is believed that the first people in Europe to use the umbrella as protection against the rain were the ancient Romans. During the middle ages in Europe, the use of the umbrella almost disappeared. Then it appeared again in Italy in the late sixteenth century. And again it became a symbol of power.

Umbrellas have not changed much in style during all this time, though they have become much lighter in weight. It wasn't until the twentieth century that the umbrellas for women began to be made in all kinds of colors.
