二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、John Keats was an English poet, whose poetry described the beauty of the natural world and art as the vehicle for his poetic imagination. Regarded as one of the English language’s most naturally gifted poets, John Keats wrote poetry that concentrated on imagination, human nature, and philosophy. Although Keats didn’t receive much formal literary education, his own studies and great interest brought him much success. Besides, his own life situation made a great difference to his poetry.

Growing up as a young kid in London in a lower, middle-class family, the young John didn’t attend a private school, but went to public school in Enfield, near his home. His teachers and his family’s friends regarded him as a positive boy who liked playing and fighting much more than minding his studies. After his father’s death in the early 1800s, followed by his mother’s passing away due to illness, he began to view life differently. He wanted to escape the world and did so by reading anything he could get his hands on.

At around the age of 16, John Keats began studying under a surgeon so that he too might become a doctor. However, his love for literature had taken too much of his time, especially with his addiction to the poetry of Edmund Spenser. Within two months in 1817, Keats had written an entire volume (册) of poetry that would be published, but was attacked sharply in Blackwood’s Magazine. However, it didn’t stop him.

John Keats’ next work to be published was Endymion, which he wrote in 1817 and was published in May 1818. The story tells a boy who falls in love with the moon goddess and leads him to an adventure of one boy’s hope to overcome the limitations of being human. Following Endymion, he wrote Isabella. His next work was Hyperion that would attempt to combine all he learned. However, an attack of tuberculosis (肺结核) while visiting Italy kept him from his work and took his life in 1821.

  • 27、When you think of Chinese food in the US, fried rice, or General Tso’s chicken may first come to mind. But a new museum exhibition in New York City is trying to expand visitors’ palates (味蕾). It features stories of famous cooks like Martin Yan and home cooks whose food represents 18 different regional cooking styles of China.

“I think it’s unfair to just classify Chinese cooking as one,” says Kian Lam Kho, an organizer of “Sour, Sweet, Bitter, Spicy: Stories of Chinese Food and Identity in America” at the Museum of Chinese in America. “Even with the same dish or same cuisine, every family has a different variation.” That’s why the organizers say if you want to taste the full range of Chinese cuisine in the US, you’ll need to go beyond restaurants and into home kitchens, which can play a central role in many immigrants’ lives.

“The kitchen itself is kind of a comfort when you come to a new country. That’s the one place where you set up as your home base, and you cook things that you remember from your past,” explains Audra Ang, another organizer.

One of the home cooks showcased in the exhibition is Ni Biying, 80, of Manhattan. She worked as a live-in babysitter for years before she could finally afford to rent a home with her own kitchen. These days, you can usually find her moving around her one-bedroom apartment as a sweet smell of vinegar and rice wine floats from her stove. For Ni, a small dinner for friends and family means preparing almost a dozen different dishes. She learned some of her techniques from her father, who made most of her family’s meals when she was a child. “I still miss the beef with stir-fried celery my father used to cook,” she says. And it’s the kind of comfort food that defines Chinese food for Ni.

【1】What is the new museum exhibition mainly about?

    A.Cuisine of different countries.

    B.Exploration of famous restaurants.

    C.History of Chinese immigration.

D.Stories of Chinese food and cooks.

【2】Why does the kitchen play a key role in many immigrants’ lives?

    A.It provides a wealthy life.

B.It brings a sense of belonging.

C.It helps them to accept new cultures.

D.It enables them to forget the past.

【3】What can we learn about Ni Biying from Paragraph 4?

A.She worked in a Chinese restaurant.

B.She made most meals as a child.

C.She learned cooking from her father.

D.She lives with a big family.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.Cuisine Gains New Variations

B.Home Cooking Brings More to the Table

C.Immigrants Seek Their Fortune in the US

    D.Chinese Restaurant Tells Immigrant Tales

  • 28、Panic Buying

Shoppers around the world are crazy buying because of fears over the coronavirus(新型冠状病毒), which caused a critical plague in China and even other countries at the beginning of 2020. People in countries such as England, Japan, Singapore and Australia have been emptying supermarket shelves of toilet paper, face masks, hand wash products and dried and canned food. Photos and videos of shoppers in Australia quarreling over the last pack of toilet roll in a supermarket have spread across social media swiftly.

However, governments have advised their citizens that there is no need to “panic buy”. They added that panic buying would only reduce the supply of products needed by patients and medical staff, which could exacerbate the problems the COVID-19 virus is causing. Singapore's prime minister comforted Singaporeans that: “We have enough supplies. There's no need to stock up.” A week after the panic buying fever, things have calmed down and shoppers have gone back to purchasing items in normal quantities.

Psychologists say panic buying is an “unwise” behaviour that is part of a condition called FOMO - the fear of missing out. Dr. Katharina Wittgens said a herd mentality(从众心理) sets in during disasters that causes people to copy the actions of others. People watch the news of items being bought in quantity and immediately rush out to the stores to do the same. She said people were taking on too much the risks of dying from the coronavirus. She said: “Far more people die in car accidents or household accidents per year but we don't panic about these things in the morning before we go to work.”

【1】What made shoppers in different countries crazy buying?

    A.The approach of 2020 New Year’s Day.

B.The shortage of resources and supplies in their nations.

    C.Their concern about the virus.

    D.The discount from supermarkets.

【2】What does the underlined word in Paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.solve

    B.release

    C.worsen

    D.quicken

【3】What is the reason for this behavior according to expert?

A.People tend to follow others’ actions in the period of disaster.

B.People are wiser in making decisions.

C.People think no one needs the supplies.

D.People do not believe what others said.

【4】What can be concluded from the last paragraph?

A.People should not panic over the virus.

B.More people die from car accidents.

C.People buy little when they go to the stores.

D.We should panic about the situation.

  • 29、Tips for Cooking on a Tight Schedule

From my experience, there are three main reasons why people don’t cook more often: ability, money, and time 1.Money is a topic I’ll save for another day .So today I want to give you some wisdom about how to make the most of the time you spent in the kitchen .Here are three tips for great cooking on a tight schedule:

    1. Think ahead .The moments when I think cooking is a pain are when I’m already hungry and there’s nothing ready to eat. So think ahead of the coming week .When will you have time to cook? Do you have the right materials already ? 2.

    2. Make your time worth it .When you do find time to cook a meal, make the most of it and save yourself time later on Are you making one loaf of bread? 3. It takes around the same amount of time to make more of something. So save yourself the effort for future meal.

    3. 4 This may surprise you , but one of the best tools for making cooking worth your time is experimentation. It gives you the chance to hit upon new ideas and recipes that can work well with your appetite and schedule. The more you learn and the more you try, the more ability you have to take control of your food and your schedule.

Hopefully that gives you a good start . 5 And don’t let a busy schedule discourage you from making some great changes in the way you eat and live!

    A. A little time planning ahead can save a lot of work later on.

    B. Try new things.

    C. Make three or four instead.

    D. Understand your food better.

    E. Ability is easily improved.

    F. Cooking is a burden for many people.

    G. Let cooking and living simply be a joy rather than a burden.
