二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、When Carlos Westez died at the age of 76, a language died, too. Westez, more commonly known as Red Thunder Cloud, was the last speaker of the Native American language, Catawba.

Anyone who wants to hear different songs of the Catawba tribe can get in touch with the Smithsonian Institution in Washington,D.C.,where,back in the 1940s,Red Thunder Cloud recorded a series of songs for future generations. They are all that is left of the Catawba language. The language that people used to speak is gone forever.

We all know the damage that modern industry can do to the world's ecology. However, few people know the effect that widely spoken languages have on other languages and ways of life. English has spread all over the world. Chinese, Spanish, Russian, and Hindi have become powerful languages, as well. As these languages become more powerful, their use as tools of business and culture increases. When this happens, hundreds of languages that are spoken by only a few people die out.

Scholars believe there are about 6,000 languages around the world, but more than half of them could die out within the next 100 years. Araki is a native language of the island of Vanuatu, located in the Pacific Ocean. It is spoken by only a few older adults, so like Catawba,Araki will soon disappear. Many languages of Ethiopia will have the same fate because each one has only a few speakers. In the Americas, 100 languages also are dying out.

Red Thunder Cloud was one of the first to recognize the threat of language death and to try to do something about it. He was not actually born into the Catawba tribe, and the language was not his mother tongue. However,he was a frequent visitor to the Catawba reservation in South Carolina, where he learned the language. The songs he sang for the Smithsonian Institution helped to make Native American music popular. Now he is gone, and the language is dead.

【1】Why did Westez record songs for the Smithsonian Institution?

A.To fight for Native Americans’ rights.

    B.To reserve the Catawba language.

C.To make Native American music popular.

D.To help young people learn Catawba songs.

【2】Which of the following led to the disappearance of Catawba?

    A.Widely spoken languages.

    B.Changes of lifestyles.

    C.Population control.

    D.Modern industry.

【3】How is paragraph 4 mainly developed?

    A.By analyzing causes.

    B.By giving examples.

    C.By following time order.

    D.By making comparisons.

【4】What can we learn about Red Thunder Cloud?

A.He passed away in the 1940s.

B.He was born into the Catawba tribe.

C.He learned Catawba from his mother.

D.He used to visit the Catawba reservation.

  • 22、Left-handed people make up around 12% of the global population. One really interesting fact that I picked up was from a scientist who believed that left-handed people tended to be more independent as a result of having to adapt to a world that is largely built for right-handed individuals.【1】!

More likely to have allergies and sleep disorders

A study found that left-handed people were 11 times more likely to suffer from allergies than right-handed folk.【2】.

Left-handed people use the right side of the brain the most

【3】, meaning that the right side controls the left side of the body and the other way around. Hence there is a well-known saying “only left-handed people are in their right minds”. The right-hand side of the brain is thought to control the left side of the body and tasks to do with the arts and creativity.

    Are left-handed people smarter?

【4】! One 2007 study “Effect of handedness on intelligence level of students”shows that lefties are more likely to have higher IQ. However, another 2010 study “The relationship between hand preference, hand performance, and general cognitive ability” suggests the exact opposite!

    【5】

Experiments showed that when given two tasks to complete simultaneously (同时), lefties performed best. This is because right-handed people tend to solve problems by breaking them down into parts and analyzing each piece one at a time. While left-handed people tend to look at the problem as a whole and use pattern-matching to try and solve it.

    A.Better at multi-tasking

    B.Smarter than the right-handed

C.As we know, the brain is cross-wired

D.This one varies depending on how dated your source is

E.Here are a few more fascinating left-handed people facts

F.Mixed-handed children are more likely to experience language issues

G.And lefties were two and a half times more likely to suffer from sleep disorders

  • 24、Experiment: A Steam-Proof Mirror

Have you noticed that after you take a warm shower or bath, the bathroom mirror is covered with tiny water droplets (水滴) that look like fog?

Here is a cure for foggy mirrors.

    You will need

Bathroom with mirror and shower or bathtub in the same room

Small bottle of glycerin (甘油) (sold in drugstores)

    Liquid glass cleaner

    Paper towel

    Do this

    THE PROBLEM

Take a long, warm shower or bath with the door closed. Look closely at the mirror and wipe the water droplets with your finger. If the mirror is very clean, it will not get very foggy; the problem of a steamed- up mirror is worse when the mirror is dirty or dusty.

    SOLVING IT

Clean half of the mirror with glass cleaner and paper towels, and let it dry.

Use a clean paper towel to rub some glycerin around on the half of the mirror you cleaned until it is covered with a thin layer.

The next time someone takes a long shower or bath, see what the mirror does.

    What happened?

The half of the mirror covered with glycerin will not get foggy. That is because specks (微粒) of dust on the surface of the glass give the tiny water droplets a place to form. The glass cleaner removed any dust on the mirror and the glycerin gave the mirror a slick (光滑的) surface that didn’t collect dust; the water droplets had no dust particles to form on.

【1】You need the following things to make the experiment except ________.

    A.some glycerin

    B.a bathroom excluding a mirror

    C.paper towel

    D.liquid glass cleaner

【2】What is the right order of the experiment?

    a. Take a long, warm bath or shower with the door closed.

    b. Rub some glycerin around on the half cleaned mirror.

    c. Clean half of the mirror and let it dry.

    d. Prepare some necessary things.

    e. The half of the mirror covered with glycerin will not get foggy.

    A.a-d-b-c-e

    B.a-b-d-e-c

    C.d-a-c-b-e

    D.d-c-b-a-e

【3】What is the final result of the experiment?

A.The cleaned mirror covered with glycerin will not get foggy.

B.If the mirror is very clean, it will not get foggy.

C.A slick surface collects no dust.

D.A steamed-up mirror must be very dirty.
