四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Isn’t fast food delicious? Aren’t fast food restaurants cool? The answer to these questions is yes.

However, there are growing facts that fast food is one of the worst parts of modern life. And studies have shown that burgers and fried chicken, which we enjoy so much, can cause a lot of health problems.

In spite of(尽管)this , why are fast food restaurants so attractive(吸引人的)? The first and most important reason is that their service is fast. Their staff are friendly and very smart﹣looking in their clean and bright uniforms. Moreover, most fast food restaurants are near places that people always pass by. It is so easy to grab a burger and eat on the way to work.

Fast food is often so conveniently packed that it will not cause a mess even if you stand and eat it. Fast food restaurants are also very clean. A lot of clever ads(广告) have made them the coolest places in town, but none of them has ever told and will never tell you that too much fast food is not good for your health.

Such attractive places are selling junk food! Isn’t it a pity? Is there a way to change the fast food restaurants into special places where you get the best possible, healthy and fresh food?

    Well, why not?

As people realize the health problems that fast food causes, it is quite likely that fast food restaurants may go out of date. It may happen sooner or later. Therefore, instead of resisting (抵制) fast food restaurants, a better idea may be to persuade (说服) them to change their menu! Fast food restaurants can be places to go to when you want to eat something that will be good for your body. If they could combine(结合)healthy food with their speed of service, delicious tastes and comfortable feelings, that will be the next best thing on the earth for the human beings!

  • 25、       Although public health service pointed out many problems about soft drinks like coca-cola, we still drink them too much. Actually, soft drink consumption (消费) increased from 43.1 kilos per person in 2000 to 70.6 kilos in 2022.

However, not everyone drinks them. Two new studies show the fact that some of us will buy and drink more soft drinks than others.

The first study, by researchers at Flanders University, tried to understand why. It found that some people know it’s unhealthy to buy soft drinks, but they just ignore (忽略) the unhealthy fact. After all, sugar makes them happy!

It also found that the soft drink companies put interesting ads on TV programs to draw people’s attention. Colorful pictures and cool drinks make it hard for people to fight against the thought of buying a bottle of cola. Some smarter soft drink companies even put the words like “fun, happiness and friendship for young people” or “___▲___” into their ads. These active and meaningful words give some people good excuses to buy soft drinks.

The second study provides information about who is the target population (目标人群). They found that soft drink companies, like Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, spend billions of dollars on such target population as children, teenagers and young adults. Soft drinks, even “zero-sugar” ones, are high in calories (热量). With more and more consumption of soft drinks, these young people “buy” increased body weight and increased risk of health problems.

Joshua McGreen, the lead researcher, suggested we should stop some soft drink ads for sports, “It’s especially important for sports stars to stop making ads on TV programs for soft drinks.” And he is now studying a new mobile app which can help people to keep themselves from soft drinks.

Another researcher Rosemary Stanton said we should start by training the taste buds (味蕾) of young children to milk and water only, “By giving them sweet drinks at an early age, we give their taste buds the expectation that thirst will only be satisfied by something sweet, which may be juice or soft drinks.” She added, “To avoid the bad habit, let’s get back to the world with only water and milk.”

【1】Some people still buy soft drinks because ______ makes them happy.

    A.sugar

    B.water

    C.salt

    D.milk

【2】Which of the following sentences can be put in the ___▲___?

【3】According to the researchers, we should _______.

    A.produce more “zero-sugar” soft drinks

B.stop children from watching ads on TV programs

C.allow children to have sweet drinks at a proper time

D.train children at an early age to drink milk and water only

  • 26、   The Baird family’s house has a kitchen, a living room, a bathroom, and three bedrooms. It’s big enough for the family of five: parents William and Laura, 9-year-old twins (双胞胎) Jasmine and Jessica, and 5-year-old Evan. There’s even room for their three cats and a dog. That doesn’t sound unusual, does it?

But the home is typical. At just 40 feet long, the whole house is about the length of a school bus! And it’s only 12 feet wide. It’s about four times smaller than their last house. The Bairds moved into their small house in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, in the summer of 2014. And they aren’t the only ones living small. In recent years, small houses have become more popular across the US.

The Bairds’ house is actually much bigger than many other small homes. Most are less than half its size. Like many families who have made the change, the Bairds say they want to help the planet.

“We think a lot more about what we’re doing and how we’re influencing (影响) the environment,” says William.

How can small houses have a big influence on the environment? For one thing, building them requires (需要) less wood than bigger homes do.

“You don’t have to cut down as many trees to build it,” Jessica says.

Small homes also use less of other natural resources (资源), like oil. Because the Bairds’ house is so small, it doesn’t take much fuel (燃料) to heat it in winter.

    根据材料内容选择最佳答案。

【1】How many pets do the Bairds keep?

    A.2.

    B.3.

    C.4.

【2】The Bairds’ last house was ________.

    A.as small as this one

    B.much bigger than this one

    C.in the city centre

【3】Why do the Bairds choose to live in a small house?

    A.To save money.

    B.To get close to nature.

    C.To protect the environment.

【4】Which of the following is TRUE about the Bairds’ present house?

A.They don’t heat it in winter.

B.It is crowded for the family of five.

C.They began to live in it about seven years ago.

【5】What is the best title for the passage?

    A.Living small

    B.Different houses in America

    C.How to protect the environment
