二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Honesty is the best policy. We may agree that admitting mistakes and behaving in a genuine way is the right way to lead our lives, but is there something in our human nature that makes us immoral? For example, in some shops and car parks you can find an honesty box — a box where you pay for something by putting money in it — but it relies on you putting the right amount of cash in. This relies on people being honest and not trying to cheat but it does provide a temptation to get away with not paying the full amount.

Philip Graves, a psychologist, suggests that this temptation is part of our evolution. He says, “We have evolved with the ability to be dishonest. It’s part of our evolutionary psychological make-up because if we can gain an advantage over the people around us, we have a greater chance of surviving.”

So why do we place such importance on being honest if we benefit from being dishonest? It’s because it is selfish behavior. If everybody acted selfishly and dishonestly all the time, the world would be a very unpleasant place. As Philip Graves says, “There is a balance to strike between the extent to which we can feather our own nest, so to speak, and the risk of being ostracized (排斥) by the group.” So, for societies to work together we need to trust each other and therefore we need to be honest.

Being trustworthy with money is of course vital for an economy to survive. But being honest with words is another matter, saying what we think to someone can get us into hot water. However, a new anonymous messaging app has been designed that lets anyone with a link to your profile (简介) send you a message without knowing who it’s from. The app now has 300 million users which perhaps indicates how honest we really like to be — but in all honesty, do you want to know what people think about you? Is honesty always the best policy?

1What does an honesty box require people to do?

A.Get the change out of it freely. B.Put the correct amount of money in it.

C.Donate the pocket money to others. D.Pay a larger amount of money.

2According to Philip Graves, being dishonest________.

    A.is a disadvantage B.should be advocated

C.is part of our evolution D.helps people survive

3What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?

A.The reason for being honest. B.The benefit of being dishonest.

C.The outcome of selfishness. D.The importance of group work.

  • 27、Four films to watch this December

    Dune

Now at last we have a big-screen Dune that may actually do justice to Frank Herbert's science-fiction novel. Directed by Den Villeneuve, this is a sweeping epic (史诗) which runs for 155 minutes and still only covers the first half of the book. As space operas about young heroes on desert planets go, it may never be as popular as Star Wars.

Released on December 21 in the UK, and December 23 in the US and Canada.

    ■ Ron's Gone Wrong

The first feature-length cartoon from a new British studio, Locksmith Animation, Ron's Gone Wrong is a family comedy. The film's director, Sarah Smith, said in her post, “In our movie, barley ends up with Ron, who doesn't agree with him and they have to build this relationship from that point.”

Released on December 15 in the UK and December 22 in the US and Canada.

    ■ The French Dispatch

The writer-director's both film is his most Wes Anderson-ish ever. Beneath all these detailed plots is an combination of three short stories set in the fictional French town of Ennui-sur-Blasé, and supposedly drawn from the pages of a New Yorker-style magazine in the mid-20th Century.

Released on December 22 in the UK, December 25 in the USA and Canada.

    ■ Titane

For only the second time in its history, and for only the first time since 1993, the Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes Film Festival was won by a film directed by a woman. As a fascinating thriller, it follows a father who is reunited with the son who has been missing for 10 years. Even if it hadn't received one of cinema's top prizes, though, Julia Ducournau's Titane would be a must-see.

Released on December 1 in the UK, December 8 in Spain and Sweden.

  • 28、“I can’t turn the desert into an oasis, but I’m working hard to prevent any oasis from degrading (退化) into desert,” says 78-yearold Wang Tianchang in Wuwei city, in Northwest China’s Gansu province.

Sticking to the belief that “only by containing the sand, our children and grandchildren will survive and thrive”, Wang and his wife Li Lanying have been stationed in the Tengger Desert for 22 years, voluntarily dealing with sand encroachment (侵蚀) and planting more than 8,000 acres. They have helped turn the once endless desert into an oasis.

In the spring of 1999, the then 56-year-old Wang put forward the idea of afforestation (造林) in the Tengger Desert. Strongly opposed by his family and ridiculed by the villagers, Wang secretly sold the family’s cattle, sheep and camels. With the collected money, the couple brought their tents and sand control tools to the desert.

“It’s not easy to plant trees, especially in the desert. To improve the survival rate of sand-grown seedlings (幼苗) in the desert, Wang observed the flow of sand dunes (沙丘) in areas where it was most severe in the 12th lunar month in winter. He also explored the best spots for planting grass and trees, and gradually found effective methods for planting saplings in the desert. In order to solve the problem of water scarcity, Wang bought two-humped camels. His wife led the camels to transport water on a route of more than 3 kilometers between their home and the desert back and forth every four and five hours.

Over the past 22 years, Wang and his family have invested more than 1.2 million yuan ($ 187,770) to the task of containing the sand and planting trees in the Tengger Desert. During this period, in order to improve the progress of sand suppression (抑制), the couple spent more than 6,000 days in achieving more than 8,000 acres of sand afforestation, and used camels to transport 5,000 tons of water on the sand line. The round-trip journey was more than 12,000 kilometers.

Wang’s spirit of living in the desert for decades has moved many people. Every year, volunteers from all over the country and tens of thousands of local people come here to fight the sands with the couple and protect their home.

【1】How did Wang manage to get the money he needed?

A.He borrowed some from his relatives.

  • 29、When you visit America, you will see the word Motel on signs and notice boards. It is made up of “motor” and “hotel” and it is really a hotel for people who arrive by car (however, you don’t need a car to stay at one). You have to pay when you arrive for your room, which usually has a bath. Meals are not provided, but there will certainly be a cafeteria (自助餐馆). Americans eat a lot of salads and sandwiches. Along the main roads there are a lot of motels. Each tries to offer more than next. Some provide television in every bedroom; others have swimming pools; and so on. Motels are especially useful when you are in the country, far from a town or city. You will also find them in the big National Parks.

In these great National Parks, you may meet guests you don’t expect to see. An American friend told me a little story. In the middle of a moonless night she heard strange noises outside her motel window in the Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. Thinking it might be a thief, she jumped out of bed, opened the door and crept towards a dark shadow(阴影). As she got close, she saw the thief. She was dreadfully frightened: it wasn’t a human thief — it was a big black bear. The bear was turning over some empty tins with its paw, looking for tasty bits of food. My friend decided to leave that particular thief alone!

There are also, of course, places called “rooming houses”, where they receive lodgers (房客). You will see such signs as Tourists or Rooms Rent, and you could try one of these. A word of warning — looking for a room in New York during the tourist season is like looking for gold on the moon!

【1】Which of the following is TRUE about motels?

A.You can only find motels in the big National Parks.

B.They are free for people who arrive by car.

C.If you want to stay at a motel, you must have a car.

D.The word “motel” is formed by two words.

【2】The underlined word “crept” in the second paragraph probably means “________”.

    A.moved slowly

    B.rushed out

    C.threw away

    D.ran fast

【3】The second paragraph mainly tells us ________.

    A.an interesting story

B.the experience of the author’s friend

C.we may meet animals in the National Parks

D.bears usually look for food at night

【4】From the last paragraph, we can learn that in New York during the tourist season ________.

    A.tourists can find gold there

B.tourists can have a sweet dream there

C.it is difficult to find a room there

D.there is warning for tourists to New York

    Cami’s First Soccer Game

Cami’s knees shook as she ran onto the field.

“OK!” called Wood, the coach of Diamond Team.“Remember three things. One, use your feet, not your hands. Two, aim for the goal. Three, which way are we going, Diamonds?”

Cami pointed, trying yelling “That way!”with her teammates, but only a weak voice came out. It was her first soccer game ever, about which Cami had been more excited than starting first grade. She had even tried to wear her soccer shoes to bed last night. But now she was scared, for there were too many kids, too many parents, and too many rules.

Twe-eet! The game was on! Mothers and fathers cheered. Cami ran, too, but not very close to the others. Her best friend, Rosa, kicked the ball. It popped (砰) out beside Cami, who froze, standing rooted to the spot. The group headed toward her, flowing past on either side. Mom and Dad cheered Cami on, but she just stood there, facing her goal.

At last, the whistle blew for halftime. After taking a short rest, Rosa yelled at Cami to pull her back onto the field. Cami’s team faced the other way for the second half. “Cami, you play defense,” Coach said.”Try to stop the ball from getting by you, OK?” Cami nodded and looked behind her at the Diamond goalkeeper. She clapped her gloves and smiled. However, Cami was too nervous to smile back. “Which way are we going, Diamonds?” Coach asked. This time Cami joined in. “That way!”

Twe-eet! Again, the players ran back and forth, up and down. But Cami still didn’t move. Dad shouted, “Go, Cami!” Mom cried, “Come on, Cami!” Cami swallowed hard. Her feet felt as if they were buried deep in beach sand. The players pounded toward her. Who had the ball? Then she saw Rosa out in front, dribbling (运球). But something was not right. Cami frowned.

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右;
