21、Ideas are extremely valuable in the twenty-first century. Some people are good at presenting their ideas. 【1】 There’s nothing more inspiring than a brilliant idea delivered by a great speaker. Ideas, effectively packaged and delivered, can change the world.
So, wouldn’t it be amazing if you can identify the exact techniques shared by the world’s greatest communicators? 【2】 TED, which stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, posts its best presentations for free on the Internet.
In March 2012, lawyer Bryan Stevenson delivered a talk to 1, 000 people attending the annual TED conference in Long Beach, California. 【3】 For 18 minutes, Stevenson conquered (征服) the audience by appealing to their heads and their hearts. The combination worked. Stevenson told me that the attendees that day donated a combined $1 million to his non-profit, the Equal Justice Initiative. That’s over $55, 000 for each minute he poke.
【4】 Famous actors and musicians make a beeline for a TED stage when they have ideas to hare. A few day, after accepting the Oscar for best picture, Argo director Ben Affleck appeared at TED in Long Beach to talk about his work in the Congo. Earlier in the week U2 singer Bono delivered a presentation on the success of antipoverty campaigns around the world. When celebrities want to be taken seriously, they hit the TFD stage.
【5】 However, if you want to succeed in business, you’d better be able to deliver a TED-worthy presentation. It represents a creative, fresh, contemporary, and interesting style that will help you win over your audience.
A.TED conference was created in 1984.
B.You may never speak at an actual TED conference.
C.Today TED has become such an influential platform.
D.Their skill help them gain popularity in today’s society.
E.TED presentations change the way people see the world.
F.Now you can, thanks to a world-famous conference—TED.
G.His presentation has been viewed nearly two million time online.
22、Scientists in Israel have taught goldfish an unusual way to reach a target — by driving a small robotic car on dry land.
Six goldfish, regardless of their weight and size, took part in the experiment and were taught to drive in 30-minute sessions, conducted three times a week, every two days. The experiment was led by researchers at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. They wanted to see if goldfish’s ability to navigate depends on their natural environment, or if they could navigate even under very unusual conditions.
To test the goldfish, the researchers created a special robotic car that could drive forward, backward, and from side to side. The scientists called the car a Fish Operated Vehicle (FOV).
Goldfish was placed inside a water tank on the FOV. Using a special system, the car tracked where the goldfish was and what direction it was swimming in. The FOV would then automatically move in the same direction. To prevent the goldfish from getting stuck in barriers such as walls, researchers equipped the car with lidar. The researchers tested them by placing the car in a small room with a pink target on one side — that was where the fish were supposed to arrive. The fish were rewarded with food when achieving the task.
The fish did indeed learn to drive the FOV, becoming more skillful in its operation overtime both in terms of achieving tasks and in the time taken to complete that task. The researchers wanted to check that the fish weren’t just memorizing a set of movements to earn a reward, so they repeated some tests with a new starting position or added other targets that were a different color. They found the goldfish were able to deal with those changes.
Though the experiment showed that the fish were able to navigate to a target, it’s not likely that the fish knew they were controlling a car. The researchers say that in the future it may be possible to change the FOV to test these ideas.
【1】What did the researchers do before testing the goldfish?
A.They fed them.
B.They numbered them.
C.They trained them.
D.They weighed them.
【2】How did the goldfish get their reward in the experiment?
A.By making the FOV move forward.
B.By avoiding the car being stuck.
C.By mixing the target’s colors.
D.By having the car reach the target.
【3】What did the researchers discover about the goldfish?
A.They were born with the ability to remember.
B.They could recognize the color’s changes.
C.They were curious about new environments.
D.They could understand simple words.
【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Goldfish Learn to Drive on Land
B.Scientists Teach Fish Navigation Skills
C.Goldfish Know How to control the FOV
D.Scientists Help Goldfish Find Destinations
23、Holidays are really important. Many of us will have childhood memories of summer holidays where we were taken away from home to experience new environments and learn in different ways.
But holidays are expensive and, for those on low wages or living on benefits, they are often unobtainable. Even the cheapest holidays require travel and other additional costs that are difficult for many families to meet.
For working parents, the long summer break can be a very difficult problem for childcare. When an annual leave allowance amounts to only five weeks, there is a need to spread this across the year. Couples can find themselves taking leave in turn in order to care for children who are on holiday. For some, this makes even an affordable family holiday difficult.
The schools that I visit in Nottingham are full of experienced staff committed to giving our children a caring and inspiring learning environment. The number of children receiving free school meals is quite large in Nottingham and many schools have breakfast clubs to make sure that children get a healthy start to the day. Most schools undertake programs of group or individual educational support. Schools also have an important role in sofeguaiding children's welfare through the ongoing touch and support with their pupils. During the long summer holidays, much of this is missed.
While teachers are holidaying in the UK, many of their pupils spend the whole six weeks on the street where they live. The lack of free school meals for six weeks can result in pressure on a family budget and an inability to afford the inspiring experiences that help children to continue their learning.
In setting out its plans for a five-term year, Nottingham City Council (委员会)is seeking to reduce the summer holiday down to four and a half weeks, with a more balanced five terms of roughly eight weeks, each followed by a two-week break. We believe this will give real “down time" for school staff and pupils alike but will be short enough not to cause a real break in learning.
We acknowledge that this change may be difficult for some school staff, particularly whose own children are educated in other authorities. However, this must be weighed against the benefits for city children for whom we all have the greatest duty of care.
【1】The passage is probably written by .

A.obtain the cheapest holidays without additional costs
B.get a chance to spend six weeks a term with teachers in school
C.benefit more from the caring and inspiring learning environment
D.have more school days to receive free school meals
【5】It can be inferred from the passage that _______.
A.working parents can enjoy a five-week break to care for their children
B.the suggested plans for a five-term school year can hardly be carried out
C.the long summer holiday gives teachers and students real "down time"
D.some school staff will say “ No" to the plans for a shorter summer holiday
24、Jonathan Cranwell sat on hard bench behind the long narrow desk and watched the flies fly lazily in the sun. The drone of the younger boys reading letters and older boys reciting Latin verbs made him sleepy. Jonathan had to force his eyes to stay open. He wanted to learn something new!
He looked up at the schoolmaster’s high desk in the front of the room. The new teacher was from Harvard College. Jonathan’s father had been impressed with him. The boys had already had several other teachers, but none of them seemed to inspire Jonathan. So far, there was nothing to show that this one was special, though he’d only been there two days.
“It’s too hot to sit and memorize lessons,” the schoolmaster said. “We’ll move outdoors for the next part of our lesson.” He led the group of boys into the schoolyard. “You younger boys, dig for grubs and beetles (幼虫和甲虫). Count their feet. See if you can describe their shells (壳).”
Jonathan watched the teacher surrounded by laughing young students. No one had ever used the schoolyard itself for a classroom. “What next?” he thought. Soon he didn’t have time to think about the younger boys, for he was running after butterflies and dragonflies himself.
Jonathan and his friends liked this new way of learning.
“It will be a clear night tonight. Go outside and look at the sky,” said the schoolmaster. “Look at the stars and notice their brightness and the patterns they make. These patterns have names from Greek mythology (神话), names like Orion, Aries, and others. Tomorrow we will learn about the ancient stories on them.”
“How is the new schoolmaster?” asked Jonathan’s father that evening, when Jonathan announced he was going out to look at the sky.
“He’s different from any schoolmaster we’ve had,” Jonathan admitted. “He seems interested in everything around him, and he wants us to be curious too. He even used the schoolyard as a classroom!”
“So Mr. John Adam and his new ways make school useful to you after all,” joked Jonathan’s father.
“I believe he has,” said Jonathan. “I know I won’t forget the lessons he has taught us!”

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The dark sky, filled with angry, swirling clouds, reflected Greg Ridley's mood as he sat on the stoop(门廊)of his building. His father's voice came to him again, first reading the headmaster's letter, then lecturing endlessly about his poor efforts in maths.
“I had to leave school when I was thirteen. That's a year younger than you are now. If I'd had half the chances you have, I' ...A.nid you want to play basketball? That must be some kind of a joke. Now you just get into your room and hit those books.
It was beginning to cool. Soon large drops of rain splashed onto his jeans. Down the block there was an abandoned house. Without much thought, Greg made a dash across the street and entered a room. Suddenly he heard a man's voice behind him.“What are you doing here?"
“Who are you?" Greg hardly recognized his own voice.
“I'm Lemon Brown," came the answer.
He was an old man. It didn't seem that he was dangerous. “You aren't looking for my treasure, are you?” he asked.
“No. It is raining out." Greg answered, smiling. “You have a treasure?"
"Every man has a treasure." Lemon Brown said, “You want to see mine?"
“If you want to show it to me," Greg shrugged.
The old man carefully untied the strings, and revealed some yellowed newspaper clippings (剪报).
Then he started telling the story of his life. He was a famous blues singer in the past. His wife died young, and his only son went abroad to work.
“I gave him these newspaper clippings that told him who I was, and where he came from. One time I came home, there was a letter saying that he got killed in an accident. It broke my heart. They sent back these clippings. That was my treasure, and when I gave it to him, he treated it just like that, a treasure."
Lemon Brown put his rags in place and looked out of the window.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
