二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、The planet’s climate has been changing over thousands of years. The average global temperature today is about 15℃. Scientists are worried that the planet is warming faster than ever before. The 20 warmest years on record have been in the past 22 years, according to the World Meteorological Organization(WMO). If this situation continues, temperatures may rise by 3℃-5℃ by 2100.

Scientists say we should try and stop this and not allow the average global temperature to rise by more than 1.5℃. Even a 2℃ rise will be bad for us all. Now, half a degree doesn’t sound like much, but it could make a big difference to the planet. A 2℃ rise will mean that all the coral reefs(珊瑚礁) will disappear, but a 1.5℃ rise means that there will still be some. Also, 18 percent of the insects on Earth will disappear if the temperature goes up by 2℃, compared to 6 percent disappearing at a 1.5℃ rise. Thirty-seven percent of people will be affected by dangerous heatwaves at a 2℃ rise. That’s twice the number compared to at a 1.5℃ rise.

So, what can we do? Scientists say that carbon(碳) will have to be taken out of the air by machines and stored underground and that these devices already exist. They also say that billions of trees will have to be planted. People should buy less meat. Of all the foods we eat, beef has the biggest effect on climate change because it produces a high amount of greenhouse gases to raise cows. Also, someone suggested not buying new clothes too often, because the fashion industry is a major source of the greenhouse gases that are overheating the planet. And, of course, use transport that doesn’t bur fossil fuels(化石燃料), like electric cars. It’s also better to walk or ride a bike.

【1】Why did the author mention the warmest records?

A.To explain the role which the WMO plays.

B.To give an example for the global warming.

C.To show the latest information taken from the WMO.

D.To express his worries about climate change.

【2】What if the average global temperature rises by 2℃?

A.All the coral reefs will not survive.

B.About 6 percent of the insects will die.

C.Nearly 40 percent of people will suffer.

D.The Earth will be too hot to live on.

【3】Which of the following disagrees with the scientists’ advice?

    A.Growing green plants.

    B.Eating more beef.

    C.Cutting back on clothing.

    D.Going to school on foot.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

    A.Even Half a Degree Matters

    B.The Planet’s Climate Is Changing

    C.Worries about the Environment

    D.The Average Global Temperature

  • 28、Uncle Leo gives me a suspicious look when I call this place the ‘Scacchi Palace’. It is really a house, called Ca’ Scacchi in Venetian. Anywhere else in the world, this would surely be regarded as a palace, although it is one in need of a little care and attention.

Our house is by the side of the little San Cassian canal and a small square of the same name. We have a door which leads onto the street and two entrances from the water. One runs under a grand, rounded arch into the ground floor of the house, which, as is customary in the city, is used instead of a cellar (地下室) for storing things. The second is used for our commercial activities and it is situated in another building, which is three stories high, attached to the north side, towards the Grand Canal.

Finally, there is yet another exit: a wooden bridge, with handrails, runs from the first floor of the house between the two river entrances straight over the canal and into the square itself. Consequently, I can wander over it in the morning and find fresh water from the well in the centre of the square while still rubbing the sleep from my eyes. Or I may call a gondola (威尼斯小划船) from my bedroom window, find it waiting for me by the time I get downstairs and, just one minute later, be in the middle of the greatest waterway on Earth, the Grand Canal of Venice.

The house is almost 200 years old, I am told, and built of bricks of a rich dark brown colour. It has elegant arched windows and green-painted shutters (百叶窗) to keep out the cruel summer heat. I live on the third floor in the third room on the right with a view over the canal and square. When I lie in bed at night, I can hear the chatter and songs of the passing gondoliers and the conversations in the square nearby. I understand why Uncle runs his business here. The prices are not too steep. The location of the house is near the city centre and easy for our clients to find. Furthermore, the printing trade has many roots in this area of Venice, even if some of the old publishers from the area no longer exist.

【1】According to the writer, in what way is the house typical of Venice?

A.People live and work in the same building.

B.There are several ways of entering it.

C.It consists of two separate buildings.

D.The storage area is not below ground.

【2】What does the pronoun “it” (in paragraph 2) refer to?

    A.The family business.

    B.A floor.

    C.An entrance.

    D.A building.

【3】What does the writer say about his uncle’s printing business in the fourth paragraph?

    A.It has plenty of customers.

B.It is less expensive than others.

C.It’s the only printing business left in the district.

D.There are other similar businesses in the district.

【4】It can be concluded from the passage that the writer regards Venice as .

A.somewhere that could never be home

B.a strange and special place to live in

C.a city where it’s easy to get lost

    D.a place dominated by money

  • 29、In our life, they are two different types of dreamer,low-recall dreamers and high-recall dreamers. According to researchers at the Lyon Nero-science Research Center in France, high-recall dreamers reported they remembered their dreams almost every day while low-recall dreamers said they only remembered their dreams once or twice a month, reported Live Science.

Perrine Ruby,a lead scientist at the research center in Lyon, studied 41 people (21 high-recall dreamers and 20 low-recall dreamers) and recorded their brain activity. She found that a part of the brain called the temporo-parietal junction ( 颞顶叶交界处)was more active in high-recall dreamers. This was true both when they were sleeping and awake. This area of the brain is responsible for collecting and processing information from the outside world. This means that high-recall dreamers are more sensitive to what is happening around them. For example, when they are awake, they respond more strongly to hearing their own names. When they are sleeping, they tend to be woken up more easily by sounds and movements.

By closely studying people’s brain activity, Ruby found that high-recall dreamers have twice as much “wakefulness time” during sleep as low-recall dreamers do. And it is during these short periods of wakefulness that the brain memorizes dreams.

This is not hard to understand. Just try to think of your own sleeping experience. If you are restless during the night, you are more likely to remember your dreams, but if you sleep well and soundly, you tend to remember very little in the morning. This is because “you never get a chance to remember”, Robert Stickgold, a Harvard Medical School researcher, told The Washington Post.

As another research project at the University of Turku in Finland showed, dream content can also affect our memory. Negative dreams are easier to recall than ordinary dreams. Nightmares are often recalled because they are emotionally negative, and such dreams cause fear.

1What can we know about high-recall dreamers according to the article?

    A. They have very little brain activity when they sleep.

    B. They can remember their dreams clearly.

    C. They don’t know how to describe their dreams.

    D. They can’t remember their dreams.

2Which is true about low-recall dreamers compared to high-recall dreamers?

    A. They have higher quality sleep.

    B. They have more sleepless nights

    C. They are more easily woken at night.

    D. They respond faster when hearing their names.

3What is the main purpose of the second to last paragraph?

    A. To explain Ruby’s findings.

    B. To attract readers, interest in future studies.

    C. To show the advantages of being a low-recall dreamer.

    D. To suggest what to do to become a low-recall dreamer.

4What did the research project in Finland find?

    A. Ordinary dreams can help our brain rest.

    B. Dreams are often affected by our emotions.

    C. Nightmares often happen when we don't sleep well.

    D. Negative dreams are more likely to be recalled.

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、请根据所学课文以及所给的首字母(部分词汇)的提示用完整形式填空。

People may wonder why different words are used to describe these four countries: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. You can1 this question if you study British history.

First there was England. Wales was linked to it in the thirteenth century. Now when people 2 to England you find Wales included as well. Next England and Wales were joined to Scotland in the seventeenth century and the name was changed to “Great Britain”. Happily this was 3 without conflict when King James of Scotland became King of England and Wales as well. Finally the English government tried in the early twentieth century to form the United Kingdom by getting Ireland connected in the same peaceful way. However, the southern part of Ireland was unwilling and broke away to form its own government. So only Northern Ireland joined with England, Wales and Scotland to become the United Kingdom and this was shown to the world in a new flag called the Union Jack.

To their 4 the four countries do work together in some areas (eg, the 5 and international relations), but they still have very different institutions. For example, Northern Ireland, England and Scotland have different educational and legal systems as well as different football teams for competitions like the World Cup!

England is the largest of the four countries, and for 6 it is divided roughly into three zones. The zone nearest France is called the South of England, the middle zone is called the Midlands and the one nearest to Scotland is known as the North. You find most of the population settled in the south, but most of the industrial cities in the Midlands and the North of England. Although, 7, these cities are not as large as those in China, they have world-famous football teams and some of them even have two! It is a pity that the industrial cities built in the nineteenth century do not attract visitors. For historical 8 you have to go to older but smaller towns built by the Romans. There you will find out more about British history and culture.

The greatest historical treasure of all is London with its museums, art collections, theatres, parks and buildings. It is the center of national government and its 9. It has the oldest port built by the Romans in the first century AD, the oldest building begun by the Anglo-Saxons in the 1060s and the oldest castle constructed by later Norman rulers in 1066. There has been four sets of invaders of England. The first invaders, the Romans, left their towns and roads. The second, the Anglo-Saxons, left their language and their government. The third, the Vikings, influenced the 10 and place-names of the North of England, and the fourth, the Normans, left castles and introduced new words for food.

If you look around the British countryside you will find evidence of all these invaders. You must keep your eyes open if you are going to make your trip to the United Kingdom enjoyable and worthwhile.
